  1. Re:Devil's Advocate on Week-Long Free-Software Class for Kids? · · Score: 1

I found myself asking the same question. Then I looked under that big flashy ad that made my eyes start to water and lo and behold! The rest of the article. Maybe Taco and co. can make the ads slightly less obtrusive so that they occur between the article and the comments, not breaking the article in obstrucive places.

The important thing here has nothing at all to do with cryptography. The important thing is that some how, some way, Nugget and Co. managed to get 300,000+ people together to do something (semi-)constructive. If this was a parade or a demonstration, it would get national news coverage. However, since these guys are "just a bunch of geeks" there is little fanfare. It passes with relative quiet into the sunset. I would personally like to thank the guys at distributed.net . You guys proved something here and anyone who can't see that it has nothing at all to do with RC5 needs to just move along.

  17. Biotech? on Cells' Responses to Gravity · · Score: 1

Very flat cells with taut cytoskeletons somehow sense that more cells are needed--to cover a cut, for example. Rounder, cramped cells might sense an overpopulation problem and decide it's time to die and make room for others. In either case, they are responding to a control system in which the shape-shifting cytoskeleton serves as a switching mechanism.

Maybe with this knowledge, more biotechnology could be devised using tensegrity to form the cells into multi-state transistors based on shape and rigidity.
