I'm not some blind-faithed OSS zealot. I'm writing this from a WinXP box even.
I'm just saying that MS has not had much of a history of originality. And concidering the size and stage of the company's development you can't really expect it be anything other than reactive.
To paraphrase someone on Slashdot who's name i can't quite recall:
I can't imagine what kind of guy would take a look at some old pictures of his grandma and think "Yeah, I'd do her". And then proceed with going back to the past and doing her.
You know, when i was little, we tought living in the US was cool, land of the opportunities and the like.

Our Intro to Psychology professor told us once about this program where kids got free icecream or somesuch for reading books. Apperantly, when the program stopped, the kids had no interest whatsoever in reading.
Giving Xboxen and iPods to kids so they eat healthier is not going to work. Once you stop giving those out, or a kid gets one and has nothing left to work for, they'll just drop it.
For them to keep eating healthy they need to understand why they are doing it. And even that might not help that much.
Day one: Wow, look at this new thing i got, it'll motivate me to run. *run run run* *watch TV* Day two:*run run* *watch TV* Day three: Damn, my favorite show is on but i haven't run enough, i'll disconnect the running thing just this once... THE END.
We might not have that much genetic evolution ahead, but what about a memetic one?
Technology seems to have advanced quite a bit in the last century, and i don't see that stopping soon unless we go dark ages when the oil runs out.
I don't think that coming up with new ideas is fundamentally different from growing a new limb, and with those ideas we could probably change ourselves faster than genetic evolution would.
The latest in driving simulation technology, now you can fire up your favorite driving game, park in a garage and suffacate to death from the comfort of your basement.
I knew there was a reason for all those zombie movies lately!

Sadly, useless organs are not in quite the same hurry to go away as critical ones are to appear.
So the species will have to deal with having a pinky toe, hair in uncomfortable places and organs such as the appendix a while longer.
