The documents I have are actually useful, in that it would be a hindrance to have to drive to a storage space to refer to them. Money is not a problem.
Dude! I already found a $100 scanner that does the job and works in Linux (HP officejet 4215). It scans really fast. My only problem up til now was that PDF redering was too slow. But then I compared the results to DJVU... Wow! The DJVU files render incredibly fast! Thanks!
giving that away to your competetors for free means that they will always know how to make there product perform better than yours.
Not necessarily. In reality, I think the ramifications of opening a graphics driver are analogous to a VCR company telling people where the buttons for play, fast forward, fast backward, etc... are; i.e., no useful competitive info at all.
It would be interesting to know the field in which you publish. I gather it isn't math or science, so why not just use GNU Texinfo. It would also help if you explained what you write that makes TeX more useful than MS Word. You mentioned DocBook, but have you tried it? I guess latex2rtf (http://latex2rtf.sourceforge.net/) doesn't work so well either, hunh?
Everybody who obeyed the order to evacuate go out in time.
This is not true, but you shouldn't be surprised because you have no way of knowing either. Flights were cancelled at the last minute. Greyhound cancelled it's trips. Many poor people don't have cars, and don't have access to a car. Many people don't have family outside of New Orleans, or anywhere. MOST poor people can't afford a hotel for more than a day, and MOST poor people don't have credit cards. So many went to the Superdome or the Convention Center, which were opened for this purpose. You wouldn't be so blissfully ignorant if it weren't so curturally acceptable nowadays, so you can blame others for that as well.
Its a lot like those idiots living in trailers in 'Tornado Alley' that 'can't beleve' its happend to them, who would have though that a tornado might blow away a trailer in that area, its like absurd.
When a tornado hits a house, it smashes it like a bomb. When a tornado hits a trailer, it smashes it like a bomb. You are a fool.
New Orleans is a total shithole. Outside of the (small) tourist areas, it's a dangerous city. And the demographics are somewhat similar to Haiti and Somalia, frankly. I think if this would have happened in Iowa, Oregon, or Hawaii, things would be totally different.
I'm not sure I'd call $14 "a little higher" than the average prices of $9-$10 everywhere else (except The Grove on the weekends). Wasn't aware Arclight refused late entries. I hope they offer a refund for such a high price.
unless you adamantly refuse to take notes with pencil and paper. Get a cheap sheet fed scanner, like the HP Offijet 4215 all-in-one ($100). The paper feed is vertical like a printer (well, it is a printer) and monochrome scans go really fast, like 5 seconds a page. You can take notes on 8.5x11 paper and scan them in every day/week/month in just a few minutes with xscanimage. Convert the pages to a single PDF with your favorite free software such as Imagemagick, PDFTK, or whatever... I was able to scan hundreds of pages of notes from the past, as well as essentially all the research notes I do now. I don't use this particular model for printing at all, so I don't even know if it works in Linux (haven't even opened up the starter cartridges) but this thing is very useful for scanning many 8.5x11 pages without lifting a finger.
Indeed, the most "culturally inclusive" game has black men running around stealing cars, vandalizing shit, and having oral sex with blonde white women. How unfortunate these are the ingredients of a best seller.
Then why install Apache in the first place? I'm sure you can use something else for Intranet applications and whatnot, or at least configure the server to only accept connections from the LAN.
Most likely the poster wants stuff to be accessible from the internet, but still wants it to be somewhat secret, via hidden directories or password-protected pages. Apache, or another webserver, is still the way to go even if you just want local access, because you can view the info really fast in a browser, compared to say FTP, SSH, or running a remote X session. Can you think of something easier to set up? Just installing apache and typing "/etc/init.d/apache start" is pretty compelling.
for 911 calls. In California, if you call 911 on a cell phone, you get the CHP (State police) and then get put on hold for 5 minutes. If you call 911 on a landline, you get an operator who can tell you your name and address in a split second. Most people never make a 911 call, but when you have to make a 911 call on a cell phone, you'll cherish that land line.
I have to admit that I love the terminal program on OSX. The computer lab I use has 100 windows PCs and 8 Macs, which are never used, and not having to stand in line is the reason I started using the Mac away from home. It's amazing how much work I can get done comfortably because Mac OSX comes with SSH and GNU Screen already installed. I'm almost tempted to buy a Mac, but there is just too much useful software that works in GNU/Linux w/o a compatibility layer, that I would definitely miss.
A good friend of my mother had her son die in a car accident. My first thought was, "he probably deserved it." It's disturbing, but true.
Wow, you should run for office or something. Anyway, I don't see these hundereds of infractions that you claim everyday. Also, everyone does signal when changing lanes-- we just signal.01 seconds before making the change, as is required by, well, driving in L.A. Haven't you noticed that cops have been trolling a lot more for tickets this year? Is this because we're having more accidents? Please. I have to beg the LAPD to come to my place when someone tries to knock my front door down, but alas, they're too busy hiding near the stop sign down the street (no, they never came, since the criminals weren't successful in breaking in).
You can disable this in the kernel. You just get a blank screen until the graphical login comes up. Bu t then you might complain about staring at a blank scrren for 5-30 seconds before the login window shows up:)
C'mon, the gazillion users providing useful help in the forums makes me think otherwise. A huge lot of these people are young and broke, and helping each other is the best they can do for the community. I can think of no distro with such a useful, community-fed forums.
RedHat doesn't maintain GCC
For the benefit of the community, can you say which models?

O.k., I guess I underestimated the page count. Nonetheless, the notes amd binders which hold them take up a lot of space.
Actually, they take up a two 6 foot book cases, and I no longer have room for them, nor do I want to spend money on physical storage.

Racist bastard you are!
I think the author of this story is looking for reasons to get his/her boos to store stuff in PDF format.

Yes, they do, as Howard Stern demonstrated on his show last month. It was very uncool of them, but hilarious nonetheless.

Notice that the Swartz memo defers accurate judgement to a guy who says there is no copying at all. See the previous Slashdot story.

And the object of switching to Linux is... what, exactly?
Freedom!
