That's definitely a point. I wonder if it could be outsourced. Still, if Apple doesn't do it, there is quite a business opportunity for someone out there.
Apple must offer dual boot or Windows-only machines, or resellers will eat their lunch from a margin perspective. Say I'm a reseller of Apple computers and I'm looking for a way to differentiate myself, so sell I dual boot Macs. I get OEM pricing on Windows, as I'm selling new machines. The very limited number of Mac models allows for better testing of drivers for the various configurations than a Dell or HP can deliver, so potentially I can offer the most stable Windows machines on the market. I think advertising to the masses a machine that can boot as either a PC or a Mac would strike a chord. If Apple offered this themselves, they would cut out the middle man and take the marging increase themselves. Dell would have some real competition.
If the technology is piggy-backed on to something you're going to buy anyway, then sure, why not. If I wanted a PS3, i probably would rent available blu-ray titles. However, despite the popularity of the PS3, it wouldn't exactly make blu-ray mainstream. Most people have dvd players. In the future they will have media centers. Those devices will be hard to sell if half the discs in the world won't work on them.
Anyway, back to the the betamax movie I was watching.
I think long before a higher quality video standard appears that requires a new storage medium for movies (HD will be good enough for a long time), the standard way of renting a movie will be via on-demand services. Bandwidth is the only remaining bottleneck, and that is nothing more than a capacity issue.
Amen to that. At least they started allowing you to book online. Previously you had to show up in the morning to sign up if you wanted to have a prayer of being seen that day.
You just confirmed the post you responded to. I don't think you've actually read anything about the theory of evolution. Otherwise you wouldn't assume that science is saying that a single random mutation could convert base molecules into complex organisms, as your analogy seems to state. Yes most mutations are probably bad, and tend to cause the organism not to reproduce. What about a mutation, for instance, that increases the number of rods in the retina? All IDers like to say that such and such is "impossible", out of hand. There are a lot of books that explain this stuff quite clearly. Do some homework.
To you and 75% of slashdot posters: then vs. than: than is used in the comparitive - "higher performer than what the PowerPC". "Then" is an adverb related to time only. I'm not being pedantic. Too many people on this forum use the wrong form of the word and it makes them look illiterate.
Seriously, the aesthetically challenged should just go to Banana Republic and buy what the mannequins are wearing. Good taste has been commoditized if you know where to buy.
Don't forget their's.

I think he meant Apple didn't redesign the case to differentiate it from their own earlier models. Still, he deserved any smack down he got.

Until there is a combo hd-dvd/blu-ray player, they can take their discs and go pound salt.

Oh great. And you thought driving with a cell phone was dangerous.

I'm continually shocked that people with your mindset are Slashdot readers.
Buffy isn't real?... Well that's it. I'm going to kill myself.
My theory about Leonardo "hanging the brains" while painting was correct!
Fucking Neptune.
I say, Dr. Merkwurdigeliebe, an interesting idea you have there.
Troll my butt. This is funny and accurate.
Zach: Slashdot has a few "classic" posts that appear almost every day as a joke. This one has been hanging around for about seven years.

Flamebait my ass. Invading Australia for geothermal electricity. That's at least a 3 Funny.
I'm more worried about when the sun goes red giant and consumes the entire solar system. Keeps me up at night.
Or, we could have simply invaded Australia instead.
Mighty Joe Young , anyone?
