    It's a process and that process must be taught.

    If users are taught that giving their passwords away is wrong on every level, even to IT professions who are upgrading their work PC (happened!), and yet they still do it, they need more training. If that training involves sleeping rough for a week because they lost their job because they're too stupid to learn and follow a simple rule, so be it.

    There's always been an option about the text length display on Slashdot. I've adjusted mine more than once.

    And then there's the ACs. For me, all ACs get a -2 on their score. It too is in the Slashdot options. Can't be bothered to create an account? I rarely read your shite.

    Thirdly, replying to trolls, and then getting modded up in some way simlar to Reddit, Facebook, and any other site that does the thumbs-up shit, only serves to highlight the post to me. I then end up reading the parent troll. Gee Mister, thanks for that.

    One HTML5 webpage.

    That's it.

    Pull the RSS feeds once an hour. Use HTML5 to store the data. Use Javascript to write the HTML. It doesn;t have to be fancy.

    Bonus if I can 'install' my own CSS.

    I'll save it on Dropbox, Google Drive, Mega.co.nz or even my own local storage.

    I haven't kept up my skills, so that's me out. It's a weekend's work for someone...

    Google makes a shit load of money. Some of it from me. Google running a couple of servers on top of the millions they run now is no skin off their nose. To keep Reader running is chump change, as you 'mericans might say.

    The Reader webpage code can be fixed in its state today and everyone would be happy. No more new features. Just let it be.

    This is no different to EA shutting down their 'free' gaming servers.

    There's no wonder why people are pissed off.

    1. Order whatever I like using a form on the intranet

    2. Boss gets an automatic email that says "Click this link to authorise..."

    3. Boss calls me over to ask what the email is about.

    4. "Just click the link" I say.

    5. Hardware arrives a week later.

    Now, I've been "summoned" in the past for driving offenses. No arrest, no charge, voluntary statement, etc, etc.

    The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) sent the summons to my old adress and I was wrongly convicted in my absence.

    I ended up stood in front of the magistrate, in his office, where I read some legal mumbo-jumbo.

    Conviction quashed. The CPS then had 12 months to summon me again, which they failed to do.

    The above is standard practice when you've been summoned incorrectly.

    And for you 'mericans: I did not seek legal advice (you only do that if you're guilty). Common sense led the way.

    That's not strictly true. Some of us like the newest posts at the top. It's where the gems end up. These are the ones I'll mod first. No, I don't check for redundant posts.

    The obvious "first post" shit is always at the bottom. It's boring stuff posted by bored people refreshed the front page too often. The same copy 'n paste answers to the same dupe story themes.

    A few hours after the story is posted, the insightful comments start. Happy days.

    We're not so afraid of knives in the UK.

    I know two people who've been stabbed. The one who was stabbed in the leg nearly lost it, but didn't after successful treatment. The one who was stabbed in the arse cheek lost a lot of blood but walked out of hospital the next day with nothing more than a limp (and a comically sore arse). Just like the 'mericans and their gun shots, we're pretty good at treating stab victims.

    Weapons at hand are used more than anything else. Pint glasses are making a comeback after all teh ashtrays disapeared due to the smoking ban.

    Although, saying all that, we're not as violent as everyone makes out. I've not witnessed any in years. Most people never witness any violence throughout their whole lives.

    I'd suggest that book it dated if it's giving advice like that.

    These days, asparagus can be grown in a single season. In yestayear, it would have taken two. I've grown some lovely spears myself and they take no more work than any other type of vegetable. Maybe slightly more space is needed, but not that much.

    I've done this. We've done this. Back in the days, when spam was a real problem and mailboxes had a 5kb limit, you could shut down someone's email by plugging it into a vast number of websites.

    "this email address has already been registered" wasn't handled very well either. If the authorisation link wasn't clicked, it wasn't purged from the database after a set number of days. Blocked forever.

    But yeah, why bother these days? Move on. There's no attempt to steal anyone's identity here. Some kiddie is just being a dick.

    Sorry dude, coal requires a lot of processing.

    While it's stored, it has a tendancy to self combust and must be compacted all day, every day.

    Grinding it up into power takes time and energy. At this point, it has a tendancy to explode.

    Moving it in powdered form is dangerous and expensive. Blowing it into the boiler is a risky exercise.

    Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) often contains unburnt material. This must be reprocessed and reburnt. The amount of PFA is huge and this must be disposed of too.

    Electrostatic precipitators (ESP) remove harmful sulphur. Expensive again.

    You need to read up on modern carbon capture too. It's no longer seen a hard job. No longer needs compressing underground. It's a chemical process.

    I work with the French, Germans, Dutch, Americans, my fellow British and a fair few other European countries.

    Without wanting to shout, we're all the fucking same.

    If you want to stereotype:

    Americans: Say they have the 'can do' attitude, but offen we find that can't do what we ask and try to delivery what they can, which is never what we asked for. Ignored in meetings because they don't listen.

    French: Do everything we ask. Often get emotional when people don't do as they're asked.

    Germans: Do everything we ask and we get a 1,000 page Powerpoint presentation to go with it!

    Dutch: Do everything we ask, with a smile. "We'll make it work" attitude. "It's not a problem" attitude.

    British: Do most things we ask, and do it very well. Moan about it before, during and after.

    FoxIt was blocked by Mozilla some time ago. That, accompanied by some helpful bod on here showning me a list of exploits for it, made me uninstall it.

    I like the JS rendering of PDFs in FF. Why not use a script to parse the PDF? Security model seems better too - only concentrate on JS exploits, which should be done on browser development anyway.

    I call bullshit too.

    I'm in the market for a small footprint PC and I really can't be bothered to build yet another one, so I've been hunting around.

    Some "business" PCs still come with W7, but they're too big and powerful for what I need. All the major brick and mortar electric retailers in the UK (Tesco, Asda, PC World, Curries, John Lewis, etc, etc) are selling nothing but W8 and it's pissing me off. Big W8 posters on the doors. Salesmen who give me weird looks when I ask about W7. It's all bollocks.

    I just want to look at the tower size and inspect the ports on the back, but it's going to be a blind internet purchase, I just know it. Bah.

    Size doesn't mean shit and I'm glad you mentioned "80%" because that's the figure I'm going to use to.

    80% of fights are won by the person who strikes first.

    80% of fights are won by the attacker if the attacker attacks from behind. No amount of weapons will save you from a brick to the back of the neck.
