that's probably true - but people at this organization tend to assume more than actually read. All they ever really 'research' is bad hype like SCO in the news. Moreover, these people just tend to lump all open source as one entity/commodity...

I was just saying that this adds fuel to the fire that we were trying to put out... I still just wished that this was fixed before being made really public - after all this isn't code - a lawyer could have made changes easily to fit the spirit of the license.

  2. Fear on LGPL is Viral for Java · · Score: 2, Interesting
I work for a large consulting company and one of our clients is a large telecom company in the south. This company is very much against open source, due to unfounded paranoia and misinformation.

They think 1) open source code's quality is much less than commercial closed source code
    2) the open source code has malicious intentionally hidden 'backdoors' and 'viruses' and 3) that open source could threaten our projects from a legal standpoint (intellectual property etc)

Recently our company has been making small strides in changing our client's attitude. News like this kills our efforts (giving more power to ignorant people against open source) and only slows down open source's adoption...

Hell, I can't use anything from Apache - like Struts or anything else from Jakarta! Reading some of the posts (and my initial reaction to the main one) it sounds like many people are happy because of this... well for me this sucks!

  3. Wrong interpretation of Yamauchi Quote on Former Nintendo Boss Talks GameCube, PSP · · Score: 1
I think simoniker misinterpreted what Yamauchi said. Simoniker thinks Yamauchi was criticizing Sony, when instead Yamauchi was really criticizing analysts (not Sony) who think that Sony can invade Nintendo's portable market... It would be kind of dumb for Yamauchi to say that Sony doesn't understand the game business, after Sony has already proven itself to be the (pretty much) undisputed market leader.

simoniker quote: "The legendary Yamauchi is customarily dismissive about Sony's attempts to get into handheld gaming with the PSP ("I don't think [Sony] understand the game business... but software for both machines will be much different, and it would be a mistake to consider them in direct competition."), "

orig quote from the article: "There have been analysts who think Nintendo has a monopoly over the handheld market and Sony maybe able to break it - I don't think they understand the game business. New product competition in this industry is important."

This is a scary (and funny) example of what has gone wrong with the car:

"Suchart Jaovisidha, Thailand's finance minister, was on his way to address central bank officials from around the world when his state-assigned BMW stalled, the Associated Press reported.

'The engine stopped, the air conditioning shut down, the doors got locked and the windows wouldn't roll down,' Suchart was quoted as saying.

'We couldn't breathe because there was no air,' he added.

To draw attention, the minister and his driver waved frantically at passers-by. The incident ended only after a nearby security guard smashed the car's windows with a sledgehammer.

Even with the heavy-duty tool, Suchart said it took a long time to break the windows as the 'glass proved to be very resistant'. "

I'm not going to name it (Hint Hint: used to be part of a famous and government killed accounting company)... but from my experience most consultants just have an air (the sound and look) of credibility - not actual knowledge that will actually help the company's bottom line or efficiency. From what I've seen, consultants are actually the ones causing the problems - pushing technological "solutions" (mostly Microsoft crap) that they themselves don't actually understand aside from the marketing hype. I've seen open source solutions (that will actually have an impact on the bottom line) push aside no matter how reliable and strong on performance, just because joe six pack has never heard of it... I think this stems mostly from our company's hiring and placement practices. The bulk of our consultants were not technical majors in college (EE, CS, CompE, etc...). Our work force is mostly composed of marketing, business, and economics majors. While this does make sense for non-technology based consulting, unfortunately many of these consultants are placed in IT related positions for which they neither have the experience or formal training for... Oh yeah, get this: do you know these companies come up with the quantitative "savings" they come up with for the company? Consultant: "We have improved this imaginary thing and this imaginery thing." (Translation: We don't really keep track of anything quantitatively, because we're too busy gossiping in the office - so we pulled all of this bullshit out of our ass. You will believe us because we work for a famous big company, and we look like we know our shit.) If your whole argument on how Nintendo still does try to appeal to the older gamer by helping him reminiscence about his childhood, then it's pretty weak. Though Nintendo games are on the whole fun (except for SSB), they are still based on a cutesy simple story with cutesy simple characters for children (except for Eternal Darkness, Conker, and Metroid - I liked those). I happen like stories that are more complicated and not just black and white... and characters that might be flawed themselves... something that closer mirrors the way we now know people to be (which is different from when we were young)... so I can get lost in it.
