    That is the entire foundation of P2P and why long load times are acceptable. It needs to reach it's tentacles into other servers to let the network survive, but people like you keep dropping on and off the network. Stay on or stay off, it's your choice but pick one.

    Is somehow less than a winshit xp one?

    I hate to bring uptimes into this, but my tablet pc has more uptime than my servers thanks to a recent blackout. Without "sleeping" I doubt that one of these things could manage better uptime than a month. What good would one be if it crashes in the middle of a Quake 3 match?

    If only Apple would release a tablet computer. My iBook is perfectly compatible with Linux (modem aside) and hasn't crashed in any of its three operating systems (OS 9, OS X, and Debian Woody). Power management is entirely software-controlled and easily disabled in Linux if I want to use my $1100 laptop as a fancy iPod.

    I'm in awe.

    While my winshit uptime record is only two weeks, I can honestly say that I've had a Linux system on for a year and my primary server was once on for 9 months.

    There were not stopped by "Evil Hackers" or "General Protection Faults" but by power-company downtime.

    Just for the hell of it, we tried to install winshit 2k on our server while the internet connection was out last year. The installer kept crashing because of a ram incompatibility that a single kernel parameter fixed in Linux!

    If you can show me a version of winshit that is at least as stable as Mac OS X 10.2(Jaguar(Jagwire)) I will literally eat the packaging. If you can show me a version as stable as Linux, then I will not only eat the packaging but also pay the @#$@$#ing $300 for the license fee.

    The half-assed monitor at 1280x1024(rated for 800x600) from 3 feet away does this without ANY performance hit.

    I don't have kde3 on my iBook or my server yet, but my iBook is noticeably 'smoother' in kde(local) than in OS X.

    X11's best feature IMHO is its network support. While booted to OS X I can startup an X server, ssh to my server, and run any of my Linux software. My iBook's ram(only 128mb) isn't a limiting factor because I can use my server's 1.75gb.

    As for Winshit XP, X11 has a faster refresh rate over 10mb/s slow ethernet!

    I hate to say this, but I have never been asked for a damn driver disc in Linux. Given a random piece of hardware I would bet on Linux compatibility over M$ any day.

    "UNIX technology" is what makes my network possible. It is how any of my thin clients can run apps with staggering ram requirements. I would literally rather use a closed-source unix than an open-source dos.

    On a side-note to make this post relevent:
    Why is everyone making a big deal about Apple buying 64-bit chips. My iBook has a 64-bit chip. Apple's computers have been 64-bit for a long time. Wintel propoganda has even penetrated /. What a shame.

    Apple isn't planning on restricting replacement fonts, forcing the Dock to stay on the bottom, or locking you into one (howerver high res) background image.

    They are planning on making such necessary hacks as replacement Docks and Virtual Desktop plugins.

    "Just Working" isn't enough for me. I want more. The beauty of OS X and XDarwin are the only things that keep me from always booting my laptop into Linux. Linux does more than "Just Work" and dos(windows) obviously falls short of it, even NT 5.01 (xp) has trouble.

    I can't use my server (CRT monitor) while wearing my glasses because of focusing problems. My vision is too good. I can't help but focus too well, seeing individual pixels from up to 4 feet away at 1280x1024 on a 12.1" viewing area.

    Without my glasses I have no trouble, a side effect of having one eye with 20/20 vision and one eye that's near sighted.

    If you have trouble try turning anti-aliasing off and using an LCD monitor. The scan lines(which I see on most monitors) can't be seen on an LCD because of its lower refresh rate. Older LCD monitors blur too much, but my iBook's screen has no such effect and is truly a pleasure to use.
