Hyper-threaded processors act like two processors, eh? Why not just get two processors? What's the difference.
Besides, the thing that slows your typical desktop down the most is memory. It takes a long time to get data that isn't in cache. That's why multi-process (not to be confused with multi-processor) systems were invented in the first place. It's faster to have a couple programs two run than do nothing waiting for memory fetchs.
The discs are good for people who can't afford internet access. They just live off a 1000 free hours forever. AOL doesn't actually make money off of these people, but oh well.
I don't think junk mail is that bad. Telemarketing is bad. Besides aren't the discs the most honest form of advertisement?
AOL is novices, but that is an important niche that should be filled.

Star Wars and other spectacular special effects movies will always be better on the big screen. I don't care how good your tv is; size matters. Movies like Barton Fink will have a problem at the box office.
Besides, going to the movies is a social activity. People bring dates to movies, they bring their kids on outings to movies, etc. It's kind of like saying bars and resturants are dying because people can eat and drink at their houses.
I was reading your post thinking, "Boy, this is some interesting stuff. I'm learning a lot from this dumb webpage." Then I look up and see that it's a SexyKellyOsbourne post. If it was slightly less interesting, I wouldn't have noticed.

Hire me! I spend all day on Slashdot reading nonsense, and making jack-ass posts. I can do the slack of at least three people! Literally.
Without copyrights, Matlab wouldn't exist. Many expensive pieces of high quality software need massive investment from their users. If they did exist they would be kept in extreme secrecy, and hold users to draconian contracts. They certainly wouldn't give students cheap versions.
I think Disney is making the right decision for itself. The big deal about "Steamboat Mickey" is that it contains Mickey Mouse. I don't know if you've ever heard of this Mickey Mouse character, but he is apparently quite well known and profitable. Disney makes lots of money licensing him. With Mickey himself at risk of going to public domain, they'll burn the Constitution if they have to.
However, if he did go public domain, maybe one could only use his old likeness and not his newer one. I'm not sure.
It talks about paid mp3 services increasing in popularity. It is obvious that this will happen because they are new. It then leaps to the conclusion that it is because the RIAA has subvertted the P2P networks and they now suck.
This is not true more people download their music now than they did with napster. This is because Kazaa is actually superior to napster. It is easier to download songs because one gets files from multiple sources. I find all popular stuff on Kazaa with great ease, and I find obscure stuff, too. The RIAA admits all of this in this brief. (It's 67 pages, a long download.)
Feel good, we're winning. The RIAA doesn't know what to do. They need to appear to be fighting piracy to their shareholders, but any move they make is a bad one. Each time they shut down a network it allows one based on superior technology to flourish. Going after individuals demonizes them way too much.
Think about it. If I really want to copy a movie I can just hold up a camcorder to my TV and a microphone to the speakers. Then a have an uncopyprotected version of the work to put on Gnutella and Kazaa. One "clean" copy gets out and multiplies.
They can't stop us. The technology is too powerful and the genie can't really be put back in the bottle.
Besides, the hardware companies are bigger and richer than the media companies.
The some of the most socialist countries in the world are in Europe and their populations would be shrinking if it wasn't for immigration. The people that reproduce the most are the people in the greatest poverty (i.e. they do not benefit from socialism). When it would seem a sure bet that one's children will survive to adulthood, most mothers just want to invest as much as possible into a few children.
Most Europians used to have several children, as well, before the modern age. Did their culture somehow change to smart and hardworking?
Jeff Jonas makes no attempt to hide his contempt for the professionals who use math instead of miniature cameras to beat the system. "These teams of card counters are a new definition of organized crime..."
The casinos are accussing others of organized crime!
This will extend the terms of copyright to 95 years for anonymous publications and the life of person plus 70 years for known authors and ect.
The supposed purpose is that it encourages speech. My question is: What do we know about the world in 95 years? How can we know what the effect of these laws will be?
Evolution won the arguement a long time ago. Is the field of chemistry unscientific because of the monolithic dogma of the atomic theory of matter? Or is it just that this idea is supported through tons of evidence? Back to astronomy, is there any serious challenge to the idea that the Sun is fueled by fusion?
There are plenty of raging debates among serious biologists. As for evolution, that one has been settled a long time ago.
The bible was written to test your faith in the great Zool. Anyone foolish enough to believe the bible literally has hell to pay. Praise Zool! Praise Zool!
Good point. In related news, Brenden Frasier is expected to become obsolete sometime next week. However this not due to CGI, but rather due to advances in mannequin technology.

if Michael (or Colon) Powell met a black man would he wet his pants?
And you're having the same argument with the same person, too.

It's a hell of a lot more annoying than cell phones in theater.
In spite of all of this, there will still be people who will be more worried about what would happen if the Earth got hit by an asteroid. click here
