"Her views were echoed by Sir Stephen Lander, the chair of the Serious Organised Crime Agency(Soca). "
Oh, it must be serious then.
Why, I thought her views would only be echoed by Mr. William Jones, chairman of the "Disorderly Conducts & Petty Theft Agency"
Or maybe the "Drunkards Peeing Anywhere Watch Committee".
Or, who knows, that renowned subcommittee of PETA, the "Vigilante Agency Against Backwards Cat Petting"
Seriously, now. What's wrong people these days ?
I think we need a modern version of the Monty Pythons to ridicule the government paranoia and the cop-o-cracy that is invading our lives everyday and without notice.
I live in France -- for now -- and I can tell you that we are seeing major changes about the meaning of the words "democracy" and "freedom". And those changes are certainly not making France a better place to live in.
Incorrect summary: the Air Force strategic command servers(containing the mission data) were the ones infected by the virus. Not the embedded computers on board the planes (which, of course, are certainly not based on Windows).
Anyway, since the mission data could not be downloaded, the planes had to stay grounded. Which is a major embarrassment... (damn, is that the sound of Luftwaffe planes outside ?)
Reminds me of a good one, to the tune of "The Greenland Whale Fisheries":
D A7 'Twas in nineteen hundred and sixty-five D A7 And of June the thirteenth day D G That we weighed our anchors to our bow
D A7 D And for Greenland bore away, brave boys, A7 D And for Greenland bore away.
Bold Stanley was our captain's name And our ship the DIMOS bold, And we poor souls our anchors weighed To face the storms and cold, brave boys, To face the storms and cold.
And when we arrived in that cold countree The icecap to explore We wished ourselves at the Evans Area On New Jersey's sunlit shore, brave boys, On New Jersey's sunlit shore.
"Then at it, boys," our captain said. "To the tunnel let us go." And we spread our mats in the gloom and the dark To melt those tons of snow, brave boys, To melt those tons of snow.
And when our labors all were done And our backs did ache full sore The mats went to gallant Louie Alvarez And we went to the bar, brave boys, And we went to the bar.
And when we returned to our homes so dear Louie told a dreadful tale: His postdocs got drunk and they fell in the machine And the whole experiment failed, brave boys, And the whole experiment failed.
Now the losing of those young postdocs It grieves my heart full sore, But the losing of that Nobel Prize It grieves me ten times more, brave boys, It grieves me ten times more.
Now Greenland is a dreadful place, A land that's never green, Where there's ice and there's snow and the physicists all go And daylight's seldom seen, brave boys, And daylight's seldom seen.
A340 is not that "dated", it's actually the most recent 4-engine long-range passenger plane, and one of the latest long-haul civilian aircraft to enter service. The other designs to enter service in the last 15 years were B777 and A380.
Another pretty recent long-range plane, also fitted with 4 engines, and often overlooked, is the Ilyushin 96. No sure the US citizens would like their president travelling around in that plane though, but it was good enough for paranoid president Putin, so it must be quite reliable...
that ground has already been covered by others and there is no thing more to be learned.
Hey, great idea. If I were the Pope at the time Copernicus or Galileo Galilei were rousing rabble about how the Earth possibly revolved around the Sun, that's how I would handle it:
"Well of course it's the Sun revolving around the Earth, you heretics ! Can't you see that Aristotle and Ptolemy already established this centuries ago ? Not to mention Chinese astronomers. So, nothing to see here, move along, or I'm gonna get mediaeval on your asses!"
The updated AGA chipset machines (more or less comparable to VGA at the time) were pricey for the power they offered.
I would say that the AGA chipset was not that much to blame : it compared quite favorably to regular VGA and was better, and more flexible, when it came to 3D capabilities. But the 68020 sucked, definitely. A 68040 with an MMU and an FPU would have made the machine look much better.
And yet, the price ($599) made the A1200 quite affordable for a multimedia computer, compared with equivalent PCs which cost well over $1000 at the time.
Still wrong, because claiming that "there were approximately 2.5 million crimes in which victims used guns for self-protection", as the Wiki page mentions, is entirely different from claiming that "if these 2.5 million victims had not had guns to protect themselves, each and every one of them would have been shot dead."
I think you're even more likely to get shot at if you try to use your gun, than if you just stay cool and passive. I'm not saying it's a pleasant experience either. Just my 2 euro cents.
Where it will, again, be voted down. Democracy at work - yay!
You're assuming way too much about the European Council here. If the law was to be debated at the EU parliament, then there would be some democracy involved.
But I fail to see where democracy stands, when those directives are to be taken by the Council of Ministers of the Police of EU states. And once a directive is passed at the EU level, all states have the obligation to make it into a state law.
Except... well, you better not forget to export you Works spreadsheet documents to another format than the native WKS/WDB files. Otherwise, when your system fails, you're dead in the water. NOT EVEN MICROSOFT OFFICE can convert these files ! You have to get to another MS-Works equipped machine to read them, or use third-party software.
This has been going on for ages, it seems that only the newer versions of MS Works natively save their files to something that can be read by MS Office applications.
Oh, FFS ! Send it over here to Europe then. We seem to have developed some tolerance to atheism while you remained stuck in the 19th century with scarlet letters and witch hunting...
Seriously people. You will always have a few clusters of ignorant, racist, bigoted a**holes in remote areas. Why not deal with them, instead of thinking that there might be a problem with atheists ?
That's right to a certain extent -- actually the surrogate mother would transmit some of her antibodies to the foetus or the baby while breast-feeding it.
And here comes another question : who would be picked to be the surrogate mother, and how would she deal with such a baby ?
It's a strange situation. New Caledonia is on a transition status to independence, and although the citizens of New Caledonia are considered citizens of the EU, and take part in the elections processes of the EU, the island is not part of EU territory. It is considered an associate member of the EU though, and has benefited from European funds for development.

Romani, ite domo !
OTOH, the Obama administration has looked so clueless so far about that "new dog for the White House" business, it probably wouldn't be a good idea...

Dear Pope^W^W Your Highness^W
Your Popity ( © Stephen Colbert ),
I like your style :-)
You might also want to hear this excellent rant by mayor Virg Bernero of Lansing, MI in defense of Labor Unions. I mean, European Socialism. Whatever.
Take a beer, grab a handful of popcorn, sit back and enjoy :-)
Oh, yeah, and here is a good article on the subject.

Isn't that a Marxist approach ?

Wow. I don't know where you pulled that unsubstantiated figure from, but it must really have hurt...
Well, if we made biofuel out of all the bullshit that appears on /. ... the OPEC countries would go bankrupt.

...as a rugby player, I don't think we should one is enough. (Here is Chabal's profile at the Sales Sharks rugby union team.
Hey, just because someone is an unmitigated bastard and an a**hole at the time does not make him a Neandertal.
Unfortunately, jerks are not even a subspecies of human beings. I tend to believe that it's a cultural thing, though inbreeding only makes it worse.

I'd say that New Caledonia is much closer, about 750 miles away from Australia.
I second this.
Oh, and would you mind creating an account and logging in ? I'm tired of Slashdotters portraying French people as cowards, anonymous or not.
