One reason for this I can think of: A digital camera is useless with-out a computer. Try useing a digital camera with-out a way to re-charge the batteries!
How are these two related? I have a charger that recharges AA batteries. When the batteries are dead, it doesn't affect the photos as they are stored in non-volatile memory. You can also bring standard smart media chips to places like Walmart to have prints made.

According to a professor of mine, they've tried things like this in the past, with poor results. Although I don't know about Far Eastern nations with non-latin based languages, translating the computer languages simply hindered German and French programmers. He made the point that most musical terminology is based off of Italian words and that we haven't bothered to translate them into English.
Because there are only so many people they can fit on a particular frequency at any one point in time. When you max the limit, it causes outages. Since that is more likely to happen during the day than at night, the cell phone providers limit minutes during the day.
If you absolutely must use your cell phone for hours and hours on end everday, you can always upgrade your plan, or pay for the extra time you're using the frequency. Or, instead of yakking on the phone all day, you could actually talk to people in person.

Well, you complained about not being able to keep track of used minutes. An SMS isn't good enough for you?

Besides which, there are many areas that still don't have broadband connections at all. And not just in rural areas. I was staying at a friend's house in suburban St. Louis (Eureka) and not only were they too far out for DSL, they couldn't even get cable tv.
counting 'local' and whatnot minutes is freakking silly too
I haven't seen plans that have 'local' minutes. I have seen a few that don't include long distance, but most of them do. Other than that, it generally breaks down into Daytime, Mobile-To-Mobile, and Night & Weekends. Daytime is usually around 200-500 minutes and the latter two are either in the thousands or unlimited. On Verizon, you can get an account status via text message on demand that shows you how much of each you've used. If you go over your limit, you pay $.xx per minute. Not hard, and not silly.
...to think otherwise would be foolish. They know that most people won't even be aware it's going on, and that aside from the/. crowd, nobody will make any noise about it.
Remember, free speech does *not* mean you can yell fire in a crowded theater. It does not mean you can threaten anyone's life, at least in the state of California, if it is reasonable to suppose that you may carry out the threat and you have the reasonable ability to do so.
Your examples of not-so-free speech come from cases where someone's immediate, personal security is at risk. This is not the case with the NRA site.

So Slashdot is high class journalism?
However, isn't sales tax based on the location of the retailer rather than the buyer? For example, if I wanted to buy one of those cheap Linux PCs for $200 on the Web, and they were based in Wisconsin.. then I'd pay $210?
It's based on the location of the buyer. If the buyer and the seller are in the same place, then you pay the local sales tax. If you order something through the mail/Internet/phone, you're supposed to pay your home state's sales tax, although people never do as it's nearly impossible to enforce. So, if you bought the $200 computer from Wisconsin through the mail, but you lived in Pennsylvania (6% sales tax), you should pay $212, but you'd only be charged $200. If you live in Wisconsin and order the machine from the same company, then you will be charged $210.

Its not that hard to tell what he was talking about, he just left out a few details. From what he said, we can assume that 1 hour and 40 minutes of wage at whatever rate he's paid at is more than $40.

Or even an hour and a half to Canton/Akron. (Which in my experience has been even cheaper and less congested than Cleveland.)

At best you get a 'install disk' that some 14 year old kid hacked up with Visual Basic.

why the need for having silly minute ceilings?
