But some have mentioned that they would prefer to see the orginal text, well this one is the closest I can find (the web site has a bunch of other versions clicky here).

My reason is simple, for only by looking at how man sees this text can we hope to discern the meaning behind this very poetic prophecy.

While RTS games I play take months to complete on a normal difficulty. (or it could just be I suck at RTS and have L33t FPS skillz ;-)

FPS games tend to be shorter in my experience while RPG is longer but RTYS seem to be the longest lived games I play (especially tose with random maps and skirmish modes).

  15. Re:game based on FUDGE? on MMOG Creators On The Levelling Treadmill · · Score: 1

I agree, I think a non-levelling based MMOG would be a lot better one which was much more focused to traditional Pen and Paper styled XP where you constantly gain XP and it is up to you to apply this when and wherever you want. You apply it wrong its your fault. There are many systems which would be useful for this sort of thing, FUDGE, GURPS, Uni-System and the rest.

Having played Pen and Paper before any MMOG's I can say that levelling is a pain in teh butt and free form XP allows much more varied and interesting characters. Even a system which automatically allocates XP to skill sets, similar to an idea in Neocron, is preferable but I think the true freeform XP system is a lot more fun.

That being said Neocron (of which I am a long time player) seems to be not getting very far, ceratinly not on the server that I play on. There are many issues within the game not least of content and HUGE player ability gaps.

Though having sauid that I keep on coming back, I keep on loading it up and running around for hours praying no one will blast my monk to pieces with a pop-gun. I think it has teh possibility to be one of the best sci-fi MMOG's out there if it is given the chance and a few more additions to the setting (like Dome of York) and more in game plot would be fun.

Anyway, slightly off topic I guess.

  19. MMORPG or MMOFPS?? on MMORPGs - Ruined By Non Role-Players? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have to confess that I am both a a pen-an-paper role player and an avid computer game player. I have noticed this problem is mainly to do with, as people have already said, how you let people go about the tasks they are presented with and also what tasks they have to do. I have been involved with Neocron since it ending its open beta stage. There are elements in Neocron which could allow for more traditional GM (Games Master) situations as there supposed to be players out there which can effect the world by creating and removing problems. The problem is that the majority of on-lien gamers want a more in-depth UT2003 or even just a simply blaster like Quake.

Not many people are ardent enough gamers that they would be willing to put up with those who didn't want to role-play when they did. It is a lot easier not to role-play than to stay in character. I think that there should be be games which take more traditional role-playing elements such as GM's, open ended situation and missions and the like. Dues Ex 2 is promising to maybe such a game, although this is of course not an MMORPG by any means but it does show that FPS lovers and RPG lovers can find a game which they can both play.

I suppose in the long run it's a bit of a pipe dream to have a proper RPG based MMORPG or is it? I guess as always it should be the case of if see something you want done, do it. I think it'll be cool if proper role-players took even GURPS system and using the mod-happy Half Life 2 engine made a free, open ended RPG world. It could work... maybe... ok probably not. I can dream though. ;-)
