One thing I really hate about the iPod is that it requires you to make a playlist for everything. I have a large MP3 collection all sorted into directories by Genre/Artist/AlbumName/Tracks. I just want to move up and down the directories and select a starting point to play at and just go.
Two years ago I purchased an Archos Jukebox (20GB) that does it. It has problems with lousy battery life and USB1.1 but it at least works given my directory-based layout.
Who makes a current-generation player that does this?
Filing for RIAA amnesty may immunize you from civil litigation, however that affidavit becomes excellent fodder for your prosecution under CRIMINAL statues. Certainly RIAA owns one or two over-eager district attorneys wanting to make a name for themselves.
The you're off to a lovely federal pound-you-in-the-ass prison, or forking up hoards of fines.
The way to encourage organ donation is to make the the default option on your driver's license instead of something you have to request. In addition, doctors shouldn't have to get permission from the family if the deceased already has an organ donor card.
From everything I've read or heard about this miniseries (including conversations with some SciFi channel employees assigned to the project), it is exceptionally more crapacular than Episode I and Higherlander 2 combined.
This would probably work fine until BT got themselves a pellet gun.
Wonderful!

TiVo Basic
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
As a DirecTiVo owner I love this.
It's an excellent way for TiVo to addict the masses to the glory that is the full TiVo. They probably should give people the ability to have maybe 2 or 3 season passes, but still, the concept is great.
So, if I'm prohibited to use NAT-based firewalling, who's going to take responsibility for securing my home LAN? Certainly the broadband providers don't want to get into that arena for those people paying the basic $40/mo.
I use NAT not so much for the many-to-one translation of my home network to the internet, but because of the inherent security it provides. Unless the broadband providers are going to be liable for failing to protect my network, my firewall isn't going to go away.
RH8.1 isn't even out and they are announcing an EoL for 8.0? What kind of crack are these guys smoking?
It would be awfully nice if they would have something to upgrade TO before planning the end of support for the current line.
Considering that the "autoupdate" stuff in RH doesn't work very well, most upgrades require either backing out current data and rebuilding, or making a new server and moving the data over. This requires hardware and expensive man-hours. So much for that low total-cost-of-ownership that linux is supposed to provide.
I have two linux file servers in my basement, each with a 4-port 3ware RAID5 array on it. One has 4x120GB drives and one with 4x80GB drive. Great storage for network-available (via Samba) MP3s and movies and the RAID cards were only $99.
It just works well.
Yes, RAID5 is a little slow on writes, but generally that's not the way my data flows. For a bigass box with REDUNDANT arrays, it's a very nice and INEXPENSIVE way to make that happen.
You should run two drops of Cat5 and two drops of RG6 Coax to every "main" room you may have people. Run it to a central cross-connect in the basement or garage.
The reason you want to run two coax drops is that if you get a dual-tuner sattelite decoder (like a DirectTV TiVo) you will need to lines going out to your dish or to your multiswitch (which splits the signal between >2 lines, so you can put receivers in multiple rooms).
You could also run a Left/Right RCA audio system to each room, but audio will travel decently over Cat5, so you shouldn't have to worry about that.
Fiber would be useful, but frankly you don't need it now because nothing we are doing iwll need fiber probably for 10 years. If you want to prep for it, you can run conduit (probably 1.5" would be sufficient) to each room, to make pulling new cables in (or pulling old cables out) easier in 5 or 10 years. Run it to a modular mounting jack so you can change stuff out if need be.
Having just recently gotten my DirectTV TiVo (and hacked it to 146 hours of storage), I know my next house is gonna need twin coax to every main room.:-)

They can have my TiVo when they pry it out of my cold dead .... oooo doughnuts!
'nuff said.
...is just WRONG.
So they just arrest everybody that buys the fixins to make falafels?

The RIAA can take my TiVo from my cold, dead hands!
It provides more than nothing, and puts something between the Hax0R and my internal file server.

The direct-tv version of the Tivo recorder is $5/mo. Please read for comprehension next time.
Haven't Flowers and Meats been coordinated as gifts for deliver for about 60 years?
This will about as well as asking spammers to remove you from their lists.

It has my hearty recommendation.
So, how the hell do we opt out in such a way that I never secretly get opted back in again?
Perfect for today's nintendo generation of twitch-reflex script kiddies.

If only we could wire this up to remotely do the same to Bill gates every time Windows crashes...
PoIP (Pain over IP) protocol. Coming to an RFC near you.
