  1. Surprise anyone? on Creditor Objects To SCO's Plans · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have zero patience for the Protestant evangelical crowd and less for members of any cult, but Mormons, at least in my experience, tend to be shiny happy people that don't really bother anyone. Even the ex-Mormons I've met seem to have few bad things to say and if they do, you can't help but notice there's a certain lingering nostalgia in their eyes. That's not to say their beliefs aren't loony, but if members of cults were as benign as the typical Mormon, I wonder if anyone would notice, or care. That may have less to do with them being Mormons and more to do with them being from Utah. In my experience people from the country tend to be shiny happy people that don't really bother anyone, regardless of religion.

How can a search engine that nobody has ever heard of be worth 1.3 billion? Just because you have never heard of it doesn't mean that nobody else has. FAST's main product is a search engine, not a website, so unless you work for a company that makes use of their search engine you will probably have never have heard of them. It's a very good product with lots of advanced features, however it is complicated and requires very skilled (and expensive) consultants to get the most out of it. If you want to see an example of a web search site that uses FAST, take a look at Sensis Search.

In Australia, the 8800 GTS 640MB is STILL (i.e. as of today), AU$500 (about $450 US according to Google). The current top of the line video card from nVidia (the 8800 Ultra) is still AU$985 (or $900 US from Google). These prices are for ASUS video cards, from MSY (pdf), which is the cheapest shop I've ever found here.

For many people, the attraction to Apple ends when they find out that they can't easily do something that's important to them.

Hard? Since when is a Mac hard to use? Just where did the GP post mention Macs? I don't believe they did. Also, you're living with your head in the sand if you think everything Apple makes is designed to do what users want. Think iPod. My girlfriend's sister had one; and you know what frustrated her the most? She couldn't copy her mp3s off the damned thing! Sure, she could try, but who can tell what 348y2bdfmgb78b.mp3 really is?? It would be a simple thing for Apple to create a file mapping hashcodes to file names so that the original file names could be preserved, but clearly that's contrary to their goals (which are NOT in the users' interest in this case).

That's not true; the GPL isn't about any of these things, it's about ensuring the freedom of users to modify the code, which means when you distribute a GPL licensed program, you must also distribute the source code. This doesn't mean that you can't charge money for it, it doesn't mean "no stealing" (it's perfectly legal to sell someone else's GPL code - take the Linux kernel for example), it just means "no binaries without making the source available". That way when you don't like something about a program, you have the freedom to fix it yourself.
