I did exactally that a few years ago when I got my first HD setup. I synced up a HD movie on blowtime and the same move on DVD. I had them both coming in on the component inputs to my HD tv. I could switch back and forth with the push of a button.
My conclusion? There was no noticable, at first, differences between the HD movie an the one on DVD. When I got down and nit picked though the HD movie was clearer. Not much clearer but it was. In one scene there was a row of books on the back wall. In the HD movie I could barely make out a title. I couldn't make out the title on the DVD movie.
Not saying that HD doesn't rock, it does, but only for some content. Nature and sports it fucking rocks. Science shows it mostly just rocks. For television and most movies; its not worth the cost or the trouble.
For porn.... Fucking forget it. Porn is possibly the only media that benifits from fuzzy pictures from low rez sources. Low rez leaves something to the imagination. DVD takes all that away and your left with stark reality. Must face it, some of them people put the 'fuck' in fucking ugly.

Granted, Mel is worth at least 2 of the unnamed movie companies but not worth enough to me to support another format.

But yet the fuckers that designed the mp4 container standard for some fucking reason decided that you can stuff a ac3 file into a mp4 container. WTF is up with that? You can stuff a HD-ACC or a ACC into the god damn thing, something that nobody uses but you can't put in a ac3 file. Something that everyone uses.

In the meantime, LCDs have come down significantly in price and has increased significantly in quality, so now it's really hard to bring anything new into the market to compete with LCDs. Screw that. That is pretty much the direction that I'm rowing in. Most movies that come into my place now never even see the inside of the dvd player. Most of them go right in to the dvd rom on the computer where I rip the main movie off. Delete the shit that I don't want, extra audio tracks in languages that I have no hope of ever learning. Then I feed it to x264 and convert it to a mkv file. It's stuck out on the server where it takes up about a gb of space more or less. Then I call it up and watch it on the htpc when ever I want to.
Most of the time the orginal goes up on a shelf never to be touched again. What I've found out is storing movies on a server is more convent and cheaper than buying a multi dvd changer. A good 300 DVD changer will set you back about 600-900 bucks. 500 GB of storage space in a mirror set will cost you about 300 bucks and should store about 400 or more movies in DVD quality if done right.
