[rant] I feel more taken by Sci-fi! Look at all the air dates for steven's little film! How many airdates did the new robocop series get? I'll tell you how many...once! When oh when will it ever be on again? Probably never...(insert mutting here) [/rant]
Anyhow, I think it's amazing how much _more_ like Mac OS X this looks than XP. And it's even more impressive that even though it looks _more_ like Mac OS X, it has more of the awful aspects that are further evidence that MS just doesn't get what it is that makes people like Mac OS X. At least that's how I see it.
All of these god-awful directories as web pages, wizards, and other strange abstractions to keep the user away from his computer will only serve to confuse him all the more when it comes time to fix something or take action that isn't already anticipated by the software designer. It should be easy to use the computer, not easy to use the interface abstraction. That's what MS just doesn't get, and it's why Windows will always be frustrating and always work in unexpected ways.
I don't see why people say the OS X interface is so intuitive. It's not at all! I've never used a Mac before, so I went to an Apple store to check out OS X. I don't see how people can say that its so much better than XP. Both inerfaces are not intuitive....get over it! I'm tired of people say "OS X is so much more effecient and intuitive" or "No it isn't, XP rulz" or "KDE 4ever" or "Gnome rocks!" Everyone has thier or vision of an "intuitive" interface.
But Google finds over 20 times as many hits on "Wired Equivalent Privacy," so that's the de facto winner. I'm guessing "Wireless Encryption Protocol" is just such a good expansion of the acronym that it's sprouted up all by itself. That's actually what I had understood "WEP" to mean until 10 minutes ago.:)
google fight show this:
Wired Equivalent Privacy ( 61 400 results) versus
Wireless Encryption Protocol ( 129 000 results)
Shame on you moderators! This guy has written a very good and very valid comment and you mark it flamebait? Shame...shame on you! I agree with sterno, games like GTA can actually be a good thing! And, if you don't feel that way...then don't play. Rockstar isn't shoving this game down peoples throats....they aren't capturing innocent bible toteing kids and making them play their sick sadistic game to turn them into evil killing machines! As simple as that. Period!
I think what you are thinking of is united devices They are searching for a cure for cancer....quite a worthy cause...although I still rather support SETI.
Realted Dilbert Quote: "I predict that computers will continue to shrink in size until you see this headline - Man sneezes, wipes out computer facilities of east coast"
Or something like that, can't find the book at the moment....just reread it a month ago too.
I want one of these. Although I probably wouldn't really use it that much, I could still impress all my friends. Oh! Just think about the hilarity that would ensue if you bought this for your stupid cow-orker or your PHB. Hehe.
But seriously, I don't really see how impressive something like this would be. Personally, if something with an actual screen can be had for $700 cheaper, why buy this piece of junk? I don't know about you, but this thing just doesn't have that "more expensive, but cooler looking" value.
Forgetting about all the other insane stuff about banning NT/2000, why on earth are they recommending an upgrade to XP Home?? They arn't running a domain... or what...do they have one big workgroup? Insane really. All I can say is, if they arn't running a domain it doesn't matter what OS they ban...that network must be a total nightmare. I feel sorry for them....the students that is. heh
I would hope note, but I actually met a really dumb surgeon once. He said to me "my hamstrings really hurt," but the thing is...he was pointing to his ARM! His ARM! How could a surgeon think his hamstring was in his arm! arg!
Although the *nix versions may not have the graphics that the winblows version does, who cares? I set my Seti screen saver to go blank after a minute....you know how much more you get done without those graphics? Those purdy charts and graphs of fast fourier transforms take a chunk out of your processing power. It takes my computer long enough as it is!
My public K-12 school district is planning a wireless network...just need the grant to be a approved (crossing my fingers). Also in the pipeline is a community wide wireless project. Internet anywhere in the city....drool!
I sometimes have to stop and think how much I take for granted that our schools are equipped with new computers just about every year for the last three years. Went from 200MHz - 500 MHz computers three years ago, to 900MHz - 2GHz computers today. Alot of the students take for granted the new computers, the LCD projectors, the fibre backbone, and now possible wireless networking district wide. I often stop people and ask them if they ever thought they were lucky to have these things that alot of school districts (both public and private) don't have.
Anyone care to point me to some more inventive ways to use wireless in and out of the classroom? Would be a great help for our upcoming projects!
it's called "caloric restriction [sciam.com]" and not only will you lose weight, you'll live longer (up to 150% longer in lab animals).
I saw a show on dateline (or some news program like that) a few weeks ago on caloric restriction. It all sounds pretty convincing. The lab animals are all living longer, and it seems that people following this program are also healthier and living longer. They say they have more energy and more strength. But have you SEEN these people? The one guy I saw looked like a freaking skeleton! Serious! He looked absolutely hideous.
So I guess you have a few choices in life. Eat sensibly and exercise....look good feel good (proven by great people like Alton). Don't eat sensibly or exercise....look bad but might feel good or bad about it. Or follow caloric restriction and exercise....look like a walking skeletion but live healthier and maybe 150% longer. Just my 2 cents.
Heh...exactly! I live right in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota. I can find ya a perfect vaction home!
The country air (that smells like cow pies for some odd reason), the wonderful breeze (that spreads those sewage gasesa around), etc. And, if you need a high speed internet connection for your *fancy* compoter thingy mabobber we have that too! You get this dish thingy and you can connect anywhere! Its super fast but the upstream is really slow...is that a problem?
Bravo to Mr. Gaiman, bravo to American Gods, and brvo to those who leave their Harry Potter squables out of the disscussion. (I have personally read a few of the books and didn't see why everyone thinks they are so brilliant) But anyway, American Gods definately earned this award.
The book has that singular uniqueness that all good books have. It's engrossing, its fascinating, its a scifi, its a mystery, is everything rolled into one. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. For me, the best part was definately the end. I definately didn't see that plot twist coming (did anyone?). And, that is very refreshing in a time of many books, movies, and whatnot that are so very predictable.
Oh, forget those who try to define what "scifi" is. Whatever scifi is and whatever American Gods is, it still deserves that award!
I am assuming that the server was hosted from the mocha machine, and that the P4's thermal protection kicked in before it melted itself into the socket. (Reminds me of this.) If the "little machine that could" survives a slashdotting it would be a neat proof of concept and even a potential marketing angle.
Becuase LucasArt's seems to think that their classic games are worth gold. Don't get me wrong, they are great games. But they charge WAY to much for a title from almost a decade ago. Well, the prices on eBay are up there too....but if I can find it cheaper on eBay I'll get it there.
Best game EVER! Sam & Max was my very first computer game I ever played, not to mention my favorite. The thought of a sequel almost makes me shit my pants. The hilarity, the zaniness, the sarcasm (by a naked bunny no less), the everything. Hmm, that description fits Darias Inferno too (except for the bunny)...another great adventure game that is highly recommended. Anyway, Sam & Max is one of the best adventure games ever. I am going to eBay right now and buying a copy to replace my lost one. I suggest that anyone who enjoys adventure games go buy the classic and get the sequel. Now, if you will excuse me, I must go to the bathroom and then eBay.
They don't have the money that Microsoft has
Um...do you remember waaaay back when? Bill Gates didn't start out with billions of dollars. Now I'm not saying that Red Had will be the next Microsoft (not by any stretch of the imagination). What I am saying is that Microsoft built itself up from the ground up. You gotta give them that. Red Had *could* do the same thing. I'm not saying they will, which they probably won't. Just saying that anything is possible.
Anyone have a mirror? Oh...wait...the site was down before the story was even posted.
that would be interesting to see. Maybe a linux based windows wouln't be so bad? I don't see why not. What do you guys think? Why or why not?

morons
Faster than light?!?! Could you imagine the rampant cheating! The time travel cheaters!
But seriously...a neat idea if not all that practical for most users.

But seriously, I don't really see how impressive something like this would be. Personally, if something with an actual screen can be had for $700 cheaper, why buy this piece of junk? I don't know about you, but this thing just doesn't have that "more expensive, but cooler looking" value.

Say they project selling 100 of these a month for $3000 with a $1000 cost to them. To put it formally w/ business jargon:
Fixed Costs
$100,000 / Month (i know...this is very rough!)
Average Sales Revenue
$300,000 / Month
Average Gross Profit Per Sale
$2,000
Average Gross Profit Percentage
67%
Break Even Point
$447,761
Which means, to break even (using current costs) they must sell $447,761. Seems like a losing venture to me.
Please tell me you're not a brain surgeon.
I would hope note, but I actually met a really dumb surgeon once. He said to me "my hamstrings really hurt," but the thing is...he was pointing to his ARM! His ARM! How could a surgeon think his hamstring was in his arm! arg!
