  1. Re:Tivo suing over what Dish features? on TiVo Patent Victory Over Dish Network Upheld · · Score: 1

Doing a google of the patents and lawsuit, it seems they sued them over any manipulation (Or, "Warp" in their terms) of the feeds. Ie. Pausing live tv, fast forwarding, rewinding, pretty much any DVR function. Other articles mention many other companies will be sued next.

  2. I find this hard to believe. on TiVo Patent Victory Over Dish Network Upheld · · Score: 1
Looking around, Tivos patent covers pretty much any digital recording features. Dual tuners, fast forward, pause, rewind, etc. There really isn't a way to even skirt around these concepts and still be able to call a DVR a DVR anymore unless you're paying Tivo.

Articles mention this win will allow Tivo to pretty much go after anyone and everyone, and I'm going to guess Echostars "next generation" DVR software will also fall be next up on the chopping block. Unless of course their new DVR software doesn't allow pausing of live tv, recording, fast forwarding, rewinding.. Pretty much anything that allows you to "warp" the multimedia streams.

How in the world could you edit photos and videos on something like that? What about playing any games? Word and Excel might work fine, but man, could you imagine having to fight with only being able to see only a couple rows at a time?

What a nightmare. It really sounds more like a contender for the OQO and other micro devices of its kind. Not the Macbook Air.

Someone will need to find a way to get channels repeated over the airwaves so we can get this in our vehicles as well. I really don't care much for Trent anymore, and begun to dislike his music when Broken came out. But if he offers free albums, I'll gladly take a listen to see if he's making music I might like again and offer up some cash if I like it. If not, no loss for me or him.

You might want to read the article when it comes back, you might be surprised. The demoscene prided itself with playing with math in the fact that you had objects on the screen moving and deforming in crazy and amazing ways. A lot of the earlier demos on the Amiga also used hardware tricks that sometimes fooled, or "broke" the hardware to do certain effects with amazing results. Sure, a lot of demos were just a texture mapped box spinning around to some really cool music, but the ones with the textures that were randomly procedurally generated, and the box that was spinning that exploded into hundreds of thousands of points that turn into mathematical equations while some really great music played were the ones that won awards at demo competitions. The trick was who could out nerd the other groups when it came to these.

It's already in law that they need to support Cablecard for pretty much the end of time, regardless if they decide to jump onto some other standard. The devices will still need to require a cablecard slot, and the cable companies will still be required to offer them. Their new standard might turn out to be awesome, cure cancer, bring people back to life, but in the end they'll still need to offer Cablecard support. Which is EXACTLY why you wont have to buy another HD Tivo.

I asked them to check it out, and they looked up, but by then the clouds were moving across the sky as normal.

It was weird, I'm not one to think of the whole "matrix" stuff, but this really made me go "wtf". I still believe it was just a random brain hiccup of sorts or something. (I'm in perfect health, no mental issues that I know of, etc.) Weird.

You would also need to test overweight people where it actually is easier for them to expend more energy far easier than a fit kid who can basically bounce off the walls for five hours straight and burn 0 calories.

I think the real reason it got a bad rap was because anyone beyond the "kid" mentality saw it for what it really was. A poor movie cash in.

As to the OPs question, I would think this does invalidate their common carrier clause. I would think they would be liable for anything on their Usenet servers, anything floating on their mail servers, anything ending up on their users web accounts.

You are most certainly not using the "same mental states" killing someone in a game and in real life. I'd really like to know how you came up with this idea. When you're playing the game, you're thinking about getting to the end of the level and seeing what happens with the story next. You're not sitting over every corpse getting whatever thrill it is murderers get in real life.

Games and real life are distinctly different, and I would honestly like to know how you could even rationalize that the "mental states" are even close to each other. "dragon punch! eat it bitch!" was a horrible example simply because the reasoning for saying that is because you probably just won the round and will make it to the next level. In real life, I hardly doubt killers are all excited to get an extra life and get to level two.

Perhaps you could give a reason why you think the engine is poorly designed, and why the gameplay is sloppy? The game controls fantastic for having a controller. I don't think I found a glitch in Halo 3 yet, other than being stuck in a hole that the level makers may or may not have done on purpose. The frame rate is solid, the weapons and vehicles are all solid and pretty dang balanced for having so many. Four player co-op can't be beat. You mention Gears of War. While that game was definitely good, I don't think it came close to Halo 3. The two person co-op was fun, but the game was really short. It also wasn't very replayable. I'm not sure why, but I've beaten Halo 3 twice already and I would have no problem playing through again with a few more people. It just doesn't seem mundane. Gears multiplayer was also pretty limited and didn't hold my attention for more than a week.

I was planning on buying this new PS3 because it was *finally* in my price range, but now that it has no backwards compatibility it is entirely useless to me. The PS3 library is too small and doesn't appeal to me at all, so there is no real reason to buy the thing yet.

Perhaps the real reason the PS3 is doing so miserably is because people like me are still showing that there is demand for PS2 games. Why bother developing for the PS3 is they'll sell on the PS2 still?

Sigh. I just want my PS2 games on my HDTV with some nice AA and upscaling. For an "affordable" price. Blargh.

I've played through Duke and beat aliens in Half-Life 1 and 2. The Halo series is pretty unique in the fact the atmosphere is pretty damn good. Next to Terminator: Future Shock and Skynet I can't think of another FPS that had such a great atmosphere. While I didn't care much for the second game, the third seemed to do EVERYTHING fantastic. Everything was finely tuned, the entire home theater experience was second to none. Sitting on a couch and having your 5.1 surround sub shaking the entire building to the ground while you "finished the fight" was nothing short of pure awesome.

I'm sorry you have a grudge against Halo, or maybe even "non-mouse and keyboard" games, but this series is beyond "average", and in fact it's pretty dang good. The reviews and sales show the obvious, a lot of other people agree.

I sat down and tried to play Halo and I thought it sucked. I couldn't control anything. Why isn't there a mouse!? Where is my keyboard! By the end of the game, I noticed I wasn't fumbling with the controller anymore. I could circle strafe just as good as with a mouse. Sure, I can't do 920 degree jump spins with a controller. But really, I haven't run into a situation where I needed to. Ever.

What you need to do is get used to it. You will see that todays games are more than fluid enough, intuitive enough, and easy enough to control with the gamepads of today.
