  1. Apparently you have never been a sysadmin. on NYS Senator Suggests Criminalizing Spyware · · Score: 2, Informative
Wiping someones machine because of Spyware can lead to losing IT peoples jobs. It is their duty to walk through fire to keep their clients machines tip top, virus free, spyware free, and running as close to 100% as possible. Even if the client is the dumbest person on the planet, and surfs hazard sites - It isn't the point, nor their problem. At the end of the day its on you watch, and you have to make sure you keep it working despite any problems they might encounter. If they lose their settings and it upsets them, it'll go up the chain until it comes back down to you and your job.

That said, blocking sites at the firewall, setting up filtering servers, and everything else doesn't work 100% of the time. We've invested nearly $100,000+ in various security measures and our clients STILL get this spyware crap all over their machines. These sites and programs change faster than people finding them can block them. Even the most high end dedicated packet filtering systems with hourly subscription systems can't catch all this crap. It's a freaking MESS. And we're the ones who have to deal with it all in the end, or its our ass on the line when the execs who pull in $100k a day in deals lose thousands for being offline for just 10 minutes.

  2. So why arent these companies sued into the ground? on NYS Senator Suggests Criminalizing Spyware · · Score: 1

If some states already have these laws in place, why aren't the spyware people all sitting in jail? Even if they're outside the country they can be pulled in because they're sending info across the lines into these states and stealing it back, so there shouldn't be any excuse not to have the countries to ship them over and lock them up and throw away the keys.

  5. The difference is mind blowing. (Literally) on FCC Considers Mandating HDTV Copy Protection · · Score: 1
We just started getting HDTV through our cable company and I can say without a doubt, HDTV is amazing. It's very low on content at the moment, but when you see all the new shows like CSI in HD with full 5.1 surround coming through the cable box, it's crazy. I simply cannot wait until everyone is broadcasting in HDTV.

That said, if we can't record any of it, then I wont pay for it, nor will I watch it. I have a Tivo and I expect to upgrade it to the HDTV capable one in the future when it comes out. As it is, I can only watch HDTV shows when I have the time available, which isn't often, but if I had a Tivo for this, i'd watch it a whole lot more.

The people behind this have an easy choice to make. Copy protect televison so no one watches, or make it freely available for everyone like it is now.

I never know if the picture is how I want it if theres a huge crappy watermark all over it. Just an opinion...

  7. Look, you simply dont get it. on Half-Life 2 Delayed Following Code Leak · · Score: 1
You're talking about people working at home and remote sites? As if this should just be allowed? If so, then they need to expect their code to be stolen. Period. If they dont want it to, they need to maker everyone come in, work in the same building like everyone else on the planet. If the company is so lax on letting people dink around with code on their laptops while they're on a business trip, or sitting on a beach trying to keep stress levels down, then they need to realise that if their code gets stolen, its their own damn fault. Two seperate machines and two LANs is not hard to do!. It's all tradeoffs. Do you want your code stolen or not? It's that freaking simple!

And yes, testing stuff like Steam will require reimaging machines over and over when they're done doing it. Like I said, if you want the resources of the internet, then keep it on a seperate machine. It's just stupid to have someone get your lives work just because you want to check your email on the same damn machine or work at home. Never take those compromises.

  8. NOTE TO DEVS: Make private LANs. NOW. on Half-Life 2 Delayed Following Code Leak · · Score: 1

A completely seperate network that has NO WAY of touching the internet. Dont use gateway machines and the like, PHYSICALLY keep the private network on its own. If you need to patch stuff, or move data over USE DVDRW MEDIA. I cant believe such a large developer like those who are making HL2 weren't doing this. After the whole Quake fiasco of them getting a beta via a SAMBA exploit you would have thought every dev house would have set up two entirely seperate networks.. One for work, one for play.

If it doesn't fit in my pocket, and I can't play it on a plane from New York to London without it running out of power, then why bother? They need 10hrs or more, badly. Or go the way of the gamegear.

This is EXACTLY the device for it, they give you a basic and open platform for ANYONE to hack (extend!) to their liking. In every sense of the word. Controllers, software, hardware, etc ..

Really really tired of people always putting a negative spin on the "hacking" terminology .. It's like people HAVE to bust open an XBox because Microsoft doesn't want them to. What were these three CDs? Two were THE DOORS, and the other was the new Janes Addiction.

Typically in the past I HAVE downloaded MP3s to listen to tracks I wasn't familiar with to test an album out. And for 5 years, out of many MP3s, not a single album was worth buying, IMO ..

I've decided that the lastest Janes Addiction is pretty crappy and WISH I had downloaded this thing beforehand so I could have known if it was worth buying. So now i've wasted $13 that could have been spent on another Doors cd, or a feature packed DVD with multiple soundtracks, extras, and all sorts of kickass stuff.

The music industry is dying because the talent is lacking in a huge way. Everyone is churning out anything they can to make it through life instead of actually just making music for musics sake.
