What the hell is wrong with being able to do simple X11 configurations in a lousy 640X480 16 color mode? Every modern adaptor supports VESA modes, so it seems pretty cut and dry to me.
I don't have an aversion to text files - so long as the contents of which are well documented. But people coming from Windows are used to having their graphical editors - which distros like Ubuntu do a TERRIFIC job at providing. Why not provide some consistency for those types of users? Or should anyone who does not have a Linux certification 'go shove it'?
But I think there are better things to do. For instance, setting up an international task force that does nothing but go after these bastards. Sort of a Jack Bower / CTU kind of organization that tracks the sales these sites make and goes after them.
I agree with those who suggest that as long as there's email, there will be spam. Therefore, the only real option here is to make it not so profitable.
Oh I don't doubt that at all, and I actually agree with AMD's position on this! But that's not going to help those who need those lower end processors. They will go elsewhere - even the most dedicated AMD shops will eventually need to do something to fill in their low end machines. AMD simply cannot match the enormous capacity Intel has at it's disposal. Even if their processors aren't better, they are cheaper and with most PC purchases that's all the customer seems to care about.
Vendors that are tired of AMD's focus on the high end of everything. Go ahead, look for a low end AMD processor. You won't find one anymore. AMD is all about Opterons and X2's now. My local and loyal AMD computer shop here just went to Intel for their low end machines. The prices Intel is offering low end chips for is a real bargain and hard to pass up no matter how big a fan you are of AMD.
You might think that the low end isn't all that important, but remember, it's how AMD got it's foot in the door.
I think a reorganization of the company is at hand with spin offs of non-profitables inevitable. For one thing, every division of Sony is clearly at odds with every other division. Numerous examples have already been stated above.
I would not be surprised to see a Re-Org happen as soon as July, but probably no later than December. If Sony is smart, they'll spin off their record company and get back to doing what they do best.
I can say what I want about our gov't, the president, or the state of things in general without fear of getting thrown into a 'reeducation camp' or some such. There is simply no comparison as far as freedom of speech - however, I believe that our continued business with China may erode those freedoms as we are put under their yoke.
-Wi-fi support -HDMI port -No Flash support -Scrawny 20 GB HD instead of the 60 GB one
And for this you 'save' $100? That's insane! At least with the 360's Core system you could work your way up to the Premium over time. These 'features' are sorta permanent. So I'm going hook up my brand new Composite Edition PS3 to my old RCA TV / VCR combo unit. Terrific...
Couldn't happen here, right? Say, I'm just going to pop down to WalMart and buy a brand new Chinese-made big screen TV and move it into my living room (the one with the Chinese-made carpeting and drapes). After I cook my food using my Chinese-made utensils, I might just sit me down in my nice Chinese-made easy chair and dream about democracy.
The U.S. has more than just an addiction to oil - there's an addiction to cheap products too and before long our dependance will have us bowing to the Chairman too.
You know, EVERY game is moddable. This should just be standard boilerplate language on the ratings system.
"Game is rated as unmodified by 3rd parties...", etc.
Hell, I could rent a PG DVD and re-edit it in my computer to add some boobie scenes - does that then make it an 'R' rated film for everyone else? Just sheer stupidity!
Even if you did manage to get a boycott working it really doesn't matter to the record industry much because direct CD sales is becoming less and less important to them.
What most RIAA members make money on is: LICENSING. If you watch TV or a movie, shop at a store that's plays music under an ASCAP/BMI-type license, or listen to the radio - you've just contributed more money to the RIAA scumbags.
The only real way anything will get done about the ridiculous copyright situation in this country will be if the legislature steps up. Given how much money our legislatives take out of the entertainment business, I wouldn't count on this happening anytime soon.
I disagree about the 'soap' thing. Children are smart within their frame of reference, but they often take things too literally. Some of the most exciting times of my adult life as a father was watching my son try and make sense of the world around him. Benji would always find a way to describe something, even if he didn't know what the word was. The stables were: "The place with all the horses", a theater was: "The house with no windows", etc. But every once in a while, he'd act on that information and do something completely unexpected.
It's cute, and it works. Years ago there was a commercial where a kid spooned peanut butter into the VCR, my own son did the same thing with pudding once. It wasn't a malicious thing, he was exploring his world.
Now if you want to know what MY pet peeve concerning commercials is, it's when men are made to look like complete doofuses next to their all-knowing, long suffering wives - cue the "Waaaa Waaahhh" sound effect. Not every man out there is a sports junkie or a car nut either.
I've been using ASSP for well over 2 years now and am relatively pleased. It can be a total bitch to set up for the first time though - it helps to understand Unixy terminology as applied to mail servers.
BUT... Once it's set up, it's easy to modify, easy to update, and fun to watch as it clears away your spam problems.
Remember, Sony had no part of those old contracts - that was CBS Records originally. Obviously Sony has a legal obligation to fufill, nonetheless, CBS ran things differently I suspect. I wonder if that argument will have any pull. It didn't work for George Michael or Prince.
How many kids did I know who played the 'VCS'? At the time? None. All of us played ATARI. Very few knew the system as the 'Video Computer System'. I suspect that mindset transferred over to Nintendo when they took over the market. No one but hardcore hackers even knew the 2600 name for the VCS before 1984.

In one year, Nintendo went from almost no brand name recognition to parents flooding the stores that Christmas looking for 'tapes'. I know, I was there at Electronics Boutique and saw it happen. Yes, the kids drove it, but ultimately the parents had to know what to look for. Much to my surprise the name stuck...

Nintendo sounded strange at the time because most previous game systems had names like Colecovision, Intellivision, Bally Arcade, etc. Usually there were English words to ballast the name but Nintendo is wholly and clearly a Japanese construct. At the time we gave it a 10% chance to succeed - then we played Mario Bros...:)

I remember in 1985 when Nintendo announced their game machine. I believe I said something sarcastic like, "Huh... 'Nintendo'... That just ROLLS off the tongue, doesn't it?" One quick year later and it was all but a household name with Christmas shoppers looking for those 'intendo tapes'. Since then, I haven't doubted the power of Nintendo to change the face of video gaming. They haven't been #1 for some time, but perhaps they don't need to be.
'Wii' is a strange choice for a name, but I bet you and I won't forget it for a while. Maybe we've all gotten hung up with numbers. Xbox/360, PS2/3, etc. Look at the gfx card wars - what the hell do those numbers mean? 1900 XTX, 7900 GTO, etc. Maybe ATI or Nvidia could learn from this and go back to real names for their cards.
Love this quote: "According to an article at BBC News, $250 tickets for the latest Madonna tour are the fault of P2P file sharing."
So... What?! Limewire and eMule are scalping tickets online again! For shame!
To quote Jack Black: "Look, don't... I'll tell YOU what I want." This is simply a case of the rich getting richer. We all know Madonna has no shame, has had none since her career started. Although there were times she somehow managed to surprise us all. This is one of those times. What a way to shit on your fans and blame the situation on them at the same time!
Contrast this with Daryl Hall and John Oates (and I don't give a fuck if you hate their music - I like 'em and at least they play their own instruments, sing with harmony (sans Antares cheat machines), and write their own material). Are you a big H&O fan? Then by all means, join their club and get some of the most heavily discounted tickets available AND get first dibs at seating.
That's a GREAT idea for both the artist and the fans. They are always "dropping in" online and chatting with the fans and are clearly hard working musicians. Their shows have never failed to impress me and what's more, their attitude is more along the lines of: "We paid our dues but we'll rock your asses and have fun doing it." Yeah, they're getting up there, but they still give you a lot of show for the money - even if you pay full price. Which, incidentally is no where NEAR a Maddona or Stones ticket.
There are plenty of other, newer, great sounding artists out there too. No need to pay this sort of scratch to see a good show. Look, since Madonna's not really singing anyway, why not go to a strip club with a good pole dancer and request they play Madonna songs? I'm sure if you brought $100 with you and gave it to the girl she'd act like she was singing too!
