They should make TWO news sites. One that takes contributions/payments/whatever from news sites, and that can be used to "help" their stories get "bumped".
Then on the SECOND news site, keep it completly "evil free".
Oh wait, thats just for my amusement, nvm.
true, but thats not the point....
granted, the laser you buy from thinkgeek (GREAT TOY, IM NOT DISSING IT!), might not be powerful enough to hit a plane (with such precision that it gets into someones eye), but theres plenty of other higher end, near commercial level lasers that any person can purchase, and modify so that its VERY possible to do this, without much effort or radical sum of money,.....
And after some idiot screws up (like in this story), they ban ALL green lasers, including the more simply toys from thinkgeek.
well, they ain't cheap!
That really will be horrible if they ban them. I'm always cautious when I use mine, if not paranoid. If you're at all familiar with just how powerful these things are, you know they can be seen from MILES away, or if you pointing in the sky, maybe a hundred miles?? And since the beam is so strong its not hard to tell where its coming from.
bastards!
I bought a green laser from thinkgeek (AWESOME TOY!), and when you use this thing at night (especially if you're far away from most city lights), it REALLY CAN point to the stars (ok ok I was really skeptical when I bought it). And I keep thinking, HOW IN THE HELL is this NOT effecting aircraft? Granted, shooting someone in the eye from the ground not easy by any means, but now given how easy it is to purchase these lasers, it really was a matter of time until some idiot screws it for all of us and causes problems with the airlines......
I just hope to god these don't get banned. They're TOO much fun.
hehe this is just plain weird....
For some reason that rumor has always stuck in my mind, and now with this story, its good to see that it wasn't some schmuck kid who told be and I was just plain gullible (unless we went to the same elementary school!).
Never tried this before, but I can't seem to find anything about this on google. Weird stuff.
I remember as a kid when that movie came out there was all these rumors (hey were little kids!) that they were coming out with Spaceballs 3: The search for Spaceballs 2.
Anyone else hear that?
I have enough karma.......
You're such a lame troll. Der,....duh, "I reboot XP when I don't understand what's going on". So apparently I can safely assume you're some *nix GOD, but given another operating system you're a total imbecile? You *nix zealots make me sick and destroy any image that we real professionals try to give it. I have been running 2000/XP at work and I honestly cannot remember the last time my own machine has had a problem that due to the OS.
Maybe you need to grab a book and learn windows, you dolt.
I might have to second that. One day I was getting HIGHLY erratic behaviour on out network. Virus filters didn't catch anything. Everything (workstations and server) were all fully patched. No lag or latency from the ISP, NOTHING!!!
After almost 3-5 hours of head scratching and no trails, I found the problem. A 3COM hub was screwed up. A FUCKEN HUB! Replaced it, and immediatly everything went back to status quo.......they now made it on my blacklist.
First ATI outsold Nvidia on desktops, and now this! Good to see theres not a monopoly on core hardware components!
now if only software were the same way,:\
Everyone seems to agree that the ability to disable USB is a good idea, but this has been around for quite a while........not just WinXP.
Most BIOS's have the ability to disable USB. Just set this, add a password, and physically lock it down.
I loved the original trilogy, and really have no major gripes abou the new ones, but how many re-releases are there? Seems like every other month slashdot has an article about a new release, what gives?
Not just the 90s. I still see kids going for their CS degree who strongly lack any skills to make it in the real world. Its now a kill or be killed industry, but the popularity is still growing. Kids of a few years ago who enjoyed IRC, IM, and Half Life, now think this luxary can be a career. Boy will they get a rude awakening when/if they graduate and realize they are far behind all the true computer geeks out there and have to fend against script kiddies.:\
Thats ignorant. How do you think Google even came into existence? Were they there when the Internet first opened up to the mainstream public? No. We had crap like Webcrawler, Yahoo, and eventually Altavista. And then out of no where a company delivered to the unwashed masses an engine that was perfect in every which way, and now they DOMINATE.
So back then, a couple college kids went up against the big boys, and they won. And now that they have significant capitol, waging war in a medium where all the current competitors truly suck, this is the PERFECT opportunity to enter...
....all jokes aside, is that even possible? I once spent some time trying to get IE to run on linux because are CRM system was well integrated with IE and wanted to see if I could get it to run in linux without having to use other tricks/methods.....never broke any ground on that...
has anyone ever accomplished this?
I think the biggest problem will not only be interest, but understanding. You're average user will be confused as to why this "network" doesn't have internet access.
You have to remember that back in the BBS days, it was generally restricted to those who were not only in the know how, but could set it up (much easier to get internet access and surf the web).
At any rate, good luck.
jesus christ man, I'm so fucken embaressed.....
have you no shame?
I'm not trying to be a troll here, I'm serious, but that was waaaaaaaaay over the top!
I don't like it. I don't like programming for it (the SOAP API that the SDK provides is horrible slow). The people here who use it always bitch to me that it sucks. Its very expensive. etc etc....typical MS problems....
It might get better though, as I said it was released about a year ago, and 2.0 is coming at the end of this year......
if you want more info or see the typical problems, check out the newsgroup microsoft.public.crm
I am unfortantly responcible for our Microsoft CRM system, which was released a little over a year ago. So waiting for version 1.2 to come was frustrating, and having them push back the release date didn't help. It was finally made official that it would be released in the beginning of December. Dandy.
So being a good IT slave, I plan the upgrade ritual around my schedule and priorities.
Long story short, it didn't arrive until mid January. Needless to say I constantly received inquires about when the system would be upgraded, as parts of the system were not working right and MS was still working with me to fix it and they felt that the upgrade would be the solution....
I think you answered your own question. Their main base of supporters indeed do not care what OS they run, thus they don't know if this is truly illegal or not.....so why would they support AZ on an issue that most of their support base don't understand?
sheesh....
Or at least drive him (more?) insane!
Robotic Nation by Marshall Brain, a great read on our appending doom.
:\
I for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

Dude, stop terrorizing slashdot.
But, seriously, you're right, its not only getting out of hand, its almost comical.
Heres a great emerging site that has a good essay about "terrorism":
