For a guy such as myself, who does all his daily tasks on a linux box, what does this mean? Will it mean faster loading time/stability. Or will it make little difference at all?
I hope IBM does not gain to much control over the kernel because of this. Linux should be free of massive corporate backing, otherwise we'll become IBM's slaves.
IBM can be just as evil as microsoft if we let them
To reverse egineer their video format would be backstabbing them.
If realplayer can't offer commercial apps for linux, who can.
It would add to the microsoft FUD calling Linux a virus.
Wait for companies to be nice to linux, and develop a large user base. Then BAAM reverse engineer, GNU everything. Use them, like they use us!!
Actually, smaller businessess can't get their hands on licenses that cheap. Few neighborhood computer stores come with licensed windows. (This is Canada by the way, not too far from US)
These cheap licenses allow larger manufacturers to get a larger profit than your neighborhood store. Therefore, there is a microsoft tax, depending on who you buy from.
I live in an upper-middle class right-wing Canadian Neighborhood. Kids have access to High speed, and many of the teachers do to. My neighborhood was the first to figure out Kazaa and other such things.
Thus, teachers hear students asking if they can do their art/movie/fancy multimedia projects on computer. OF course, teachers can't refuse. Many will ask that student the name of the software and pirate it at home to try it out.
I have one teacher who tells all his students to use photoshop for their multimedia assignments.
The teachers use MSOffice even though they have access to Corel for a low price from the board!
Meanwhile students will pirate anything they can get their hands on, even though they smell of money in school.
> outsourcing every IT job to India, exporting entire factories to neo-colonial slave labor camps in China and Mexico, understaffing the jobs that actually remain, and so forth will save their company?
It worked for Nike!
I think that Corel's failure was the fact that people pirate MS Office, and don't care to try out less expensive office suites.
In my opinion Corel Office was much more intuitive, yet, in my school, there is not one person excluding myself who doesn't pirate software. In fact teachers indirectly encourage students to get MS Office off Kazaa or "to borrow it from a friend"
It is really really sick.
We must stop piracy in the education system, it'll save good companies like Corel.
In my school, teachers are the very people who pirate the most software. It doesn't matter what any company gives for free. Plus, I haven't seen one school board that runs Macs. If the school board isn't running Macs, the teachers wont be either.
a bit redundant, but, I have to ask and stress someone does a good job of asking it.
Someone has to ask about open source
Say it in such a way that you don't mention Linux, but say "third party" operating system
Also ask about how it will affect open source.
Ask about how applications get certified to run on palladium enabled chips.
I sure hope you've got one. Where is the FTP? I sure hope you are honouring the millions of developers who helped build the core of that distro for no money.

You see, it does not matter whether DSL providers are small or big, they usually buy DSL equipment and rent infrastructure from a larger company. If that large company wants to monitor you, it does not matter if the puny DSL company monitors you or not.
you guys freak out at 5 degrees!! How are you gonna cope with -20 (-40 with windchill).
But anyway, the way you dudes down south play the environment, you're probably gonna have some snow anyway. (When will Georgy understand) *Sigh
The cost of a UNIX administrator will vary significantly. Some will hack around all day at your expense, others will be only business.
Some will be defensive in their approach to computers, meaning that they are meticulous and have rules on how computers should be used. Although these are the most annoying to employees, they will be the most least expensive because they will be able to maintain a network all the time. They usually are the most experienced as well.
They use something like that here in London Ontario for robotic Heart Surgery. THey make 3 tiny incisions and operate. Really cool. They also have a 3d headset. I was really blown away by the precision
Computer games can be just as addictive as drugs. It has the ability to distract people's daily lives.
These people will come to your lab to play games. They should be doing something more productive Soon you'll find people fighting over your computer stations, because they want to play so badly.
They may not be talking about drugs. But they should be talking about jobs.
I'd hate having product placement in a workspace environment. But I wouldn't meind seeing a few in some GNU games. That way there'd be more games for my favorite OS.

Broadband costs $40 a month
At least %30 of your income goes to taxes (But you get free health care and lots of social services)
I dunno about Civil Engineers pay, but generally most starting engineers get $40 grand and can work up to 300 grand
We have a small population, so you have limited options here if you like big cities. (3 big cities: toronto, vancouver, montreal)
Canada is a nice place depending on which city you're thinking of, anything in mind?

My friend hated OpenOffice since he had used MSOffice all his life (pirated of course)

After reading the nicely written article, I realised it mentioned Mandrake Control Centre. Could this be how it is so good at autodetection??

If you want to prepare for the ice age, come to canada. We need lots more unix geeks anyway. (with the exception of ottawa)

It shuts up all the MS geeks at my school who depend on piracy. They simply leave me alone, thus, leaving people who have a life to talk to me.
