Most of the things these authors wrote about is common sense. Anyone who has played a few RPGs over the years will know this stuff. Not worth the read. Sorry to sound like such a pessimist/cynic/whatever...

This value is a result of the fact that he has turned down lower offers, in all likeliness. If they could get away with 20 million dollars, they'd do it, but ol' Mel has probably said no to such offers. Blah, how greedy.
"It's simply going to be too hard/impractical and, frankly, useless to make an intelligent machine that mimicked every hormonal reaction and instinctual mechanism."
You know, if every great mind in human history had thought like this, we wouldn't be posting on Slashdot right now. Your argument that it isn't useful is, how should I put this, unfounded? Who would have thought we could make such great use of the technologies and tools that surround us today? For progress to occur there must be vision. Without it, we'd all be stuck in the Stone Ages and worse.
There is, however, a problem with the solution that was mentioned in the link above. The actual storage medium might be able to live for possibly thousands of years, but will the reader last that long? I think not. Especially since they're talking about specialised electron microscopes that have software that locate x,y,z coordinates, no doubt patented and what have you by the inventor and company. Pretty genius idea though.
People here are saying, "Don't even think about using IDE!". Well he has no choice, does he? Tape has several drawbacks as the author mentions his comment to Slashdot. He has asked for advice on IDE. If this is not a feasible option, recomend some others (besides tape). Or ARE THERE NONE?
Well congrats to whoever thought of this noble idea, but how exactly do they plan on enforcing it? Heh, seems like one of those "laws" that are just conveniently overlooked.
Then again, if he's working the burger-flipping place instead of playing EQ, he's no longer a "tr00 g33k". Therefore, he would have no interest in a "Beowulf cluster" (anyone else notice the fanatic obsession Slashdot readers have with these things?).
The reason they haven't worked is due to the fact that people enjoy exploting others, including the leaders of those revolutions.
Anyway, it's bullshit that all bosses take risks. More often than not, CEOs end up with fat lump sums after they're fired and can happily retire to their estates.
I agree that people who start a company do take some very big risks, but does that mean the guy who becomes the 4th or 5th CEO should be able to get a higher pay just because he was educated at Harvard? The pay just isn't proportional to the work he does if you look at his underlings. It's god damn unfair to exploit people like this. Let's face it: the big man is reliant on the little ants, because without them he wouldn't be able to run a company now would he?
That seems like a bit of a ludicrous statement as what you're saying basically condones exploitation of human beings. It's people like you that lead to Communistic Revolutions...
Heh, I can see that human beings are going to have a lot more brain tumours after this technology becomes available. First it was dangerous to have a cellphone, now it's going to be dangerous to listen to music? What next?!
My god it's ugly. If they want this project to be succesful they'll need a webdesigner to fix it up. Otherwise it just looks unprofessional and nobody will take the idea seriously.
I'm just wondering what kind of libraries you people are sitting in, because over here where I live, a scanner would make WAY too much noise and would probably result and me being kicked out of the place...So...another quality has to be the amount of noise a scanner makes, before it is usable in any way that the writer is proposing...
Hahah we all know Fanning's sold his soul to the devil long time ago:P

I hate those MTV "this is how you should live" lifestyle movies/"shows"...I have a feeling this is gonna be another one of those teen cult movies about computers which will get it all wrong anyway...
Hehe, wonder how Fanning will feel about this movie being pirated on the net? (which it probably will be)
Seems like a better idea than a iris scanner, even though it has less accuracy. I mean, wouldn't you be a little freaked about sticking your eye up to this laser at an airport? It's also better than face recognition, because it's more accurate, so on the whole a good security technique...

How hopelessly idealistic...It's a nice thought, but experience tells me that people will make money out of things where money can be made.
...and "posten" means "mail" in English. So, "Evening Mail".
...then look at how much is being wasted on the US Defence budget. This sort of money is almost pocket change for the generals up in the Pentagon.

My favourite quote from the whole article:
"Wireless technology is going to be deployed across the globe either securely or insecurely" --David Black, Accenture
Now that doesn't seem obvious does it?
Oooh a leaked review! My my, and it's only from November 13th...Yes, hot stuff there Slashdot...

Now please tell me, why do they feel obliged to use the word "PC bang" in every single god damn sentence?
Think it's meant to be "can browse the web". I was wonderin about that one too for a bit (with the car making it even more confusing...).
All we need now is some wireless electricity and we're set :P
Actually yeah :) But I also have one of those little things that you slot paper thru, and those make enough noise (not a lot) to be an annoyance.
And what exactly is rueters? I believe it's supposed to be "Reuters", but whatever...
