  2. Re:Absolutely! on Possible PS2 Price Portent Pondered · · Score: 1

While I can't refure all of these points, I can refute some. 2. No mouse control. With the PS2's USB ports, any time a developer decides not to include Mouse/Keyboard options this is a developer choice. As well as with any system that has a mouse/keyboard availiable, it is the developer that chooses not to implement it. Should I hate Quake 3 if it doesn support my gamepad? (I haven't tried this, so it's just an example) 4. Investment in console is not an investment in PC hardware upgrade or other PC games. You'll have to clarify this, as I really don't understand what you're trying to say. 5. Consoles depreciate faster than PCs. I've always found the opposite to be true. Computer software/hardware rarely hold their value as long as console equipment. I just picked up Neverwinter nights for $5 NEW, you'll never see recent console games sell that low. Unless you're using depreciate in some odd way? 6. Inability to store several games at once? As far as game playing goes, This is a moot point, every single game on PC I own wants me to insert the CD before I play, so unless you're referring to applying no-CD cracks to every game you have installed, this doesn't count (and usually causes more problems that it's worth. 7. Internet gameplay almost impossible without service, even if free, is monitored. This IIRC, only applies to X-Box live, PS2 uses your personal ISP for the connection, as is also the case with the Gmecube. 8. Inability to easily run servers. "Dedicated" servers yes, but the other kind is usually as easy as selecting "Host game". 9. Requires development license for developers. Well, there is a development solution availiable for the PS2 (Linux Kit). But this is mostly to protect their copyrights. If anyone could create an unliscened game for their systems, how would the subsudized consles make any money? 11. Developers are "trapped" by the console's limited OS infrastructure. Any developer is "trapped" by the constraints of whatever particular system they choose to develop for. If you code for windows, you have to use directX or OpenGL for your games. Nobody wants to code from scratch and write a new API. 12. Consoles are "toaster" technology that doesn't impart any requirement for the user to "learn" anything new. A "cattle for slaughter" mentality from the huge Microsoft and Sony corps. These are video game systems! The point is to make everyting as simple as possible so that they can appeal to as large a market as possible!

It's quite nice, though dual monotors are pretty useless for mist gaming applications, because that would put the average FPS crosshair right between the seams, but it is nice to have a fullscreen game on one screen and your IM client and email, etc on the other. If only most 3d games made it simple to switch between the 2 monitors (i.e. without having to minimize the 3d app) this would be great. There are a few disadvantages to multiple monitors however. Apparently, Windows only supports ONE video overlay at a time, so if you play a movie on one screen, and try to drag it to the other screen, the movie goes black, and some movie codecs refuse to work on a second monitor at all.

Epson C60 sells regulary for about $65, and the converted one sells for $499 Wheras the C80 sells for about $85 and the converted unit runs $749. Why the extra cost I have no idea. "Right now, there's very little demand for DVI support." Exactly. I have yet to see a single tube or projection based television/monitor offering DVI input. In fact, component inputs (Y/Pb/Pr)are just now showing up on midrange televisions. Only Plasma and LCD screens seem to have them, and very few people own these newer displays. Every Television that I've never heard of offers some sort of RF Coaxial input, so all VCRs offer this output. Most Televisions offer RCA inputs, most VCRs and all DVD players offer this. There is a Good chance that any newer TV has S-video inputs, a few VCRs and 99% of all DVD players offer this. Few Midrange Televisions offer Component Video, Only Upper Price range DVD players offer this. Plasma Screen conversion boards usually offer raw DVI input, we have one DVD player that offers this. Projection TV's, supposedly there are some that offer DVI as well, probably only HDTV units otherwise it would be a waste. So finally we have that DVD player for the person looking to squeeze out whatever quality gain there could be over component, to compliment his $8000 Plasma screen. I can't see their being much demand for this until we all get plasma screens, or DVI shows up on TVs that regular people can afford. But then again, I don't think you'd be able to notice any improvement unless you're at least HDTV resolution anyway.
