  1. Defensive litigation on Apple's Billion Dollar Patent & Other Stories From Patentland · · Score: 1

Maybe Apple isn't just getting this patent to create an offensive, but rather as a defense.

Companies are attempting to overcome their lack of creativity/ingenuity by litigating a profit.
Thanks to the patent office's less-than-picky gratning process, there are a LOT of seemingly obvious and redundant patents floating out there.

I think that more situations will come up as companies attempt to assault Apple's #1 iPod/Music Store slot and incresingly their other software and hardware ventures.

What I'm talking about is the Creative situation - Creative gets mad that they're getting their ass handed to them by Apple and they can't pull together a decent product - so they look in their patent portfolio and find something to beat Apple with and shut them down legally . . .

Except that Apple turned around with a stack of way scarier patents to shove in Creative's face and said "Ok, we were playing nice and just plain out-smarting you but you've made us mad and we're going to match your 'play dirty' scheme"
Creative didn't really stand a chance.

A patent like this, and probably many others that Apple has, means that Apple can defend off OTHER company's offensive patent challenges.

  2. Flexible/Rolled up! on Nanowires Four Times Faster Than Silicon · · Score: 1

Do we actually want flexible computers?
Do we really want to roll up our processors like a newspaper?

Every other new future technology seems to include the phrase "and then you can roll it up just like paper!"

But there's a whole industry out there selling things to PREVENT paper from rolling up and being flexible!
We store paper so it doesn't roll up or bend, we print it in such a way to prevent rolling or curling and now I'm supposed to believe in the future we're magically going to WANT paper-thin electronics so we call roll them up??

I don't want my computer rolled up.
I want it small, cool, quiet, and light - but heavy enough that my box doesnt blow off my desk when someone walks by or I sneeze wrong . . .

Studies don't take into account the 'work' being done on the program that those people were doing

You don't get sober by simply attending a meeting. No kidding.

And, if you read any other addiction books - dealing with an addiction and digging up the root cause is extremely painful and takes a lot of time, energy, patience and faith.
When you're going through that stuff and digging up pain - your first inclination is to numb it with your drug of choice.

In these types of treatments things ALWAYS get worse before they get better.

    AA works for some people.
    AA doesn't work for others.

It's a voluntary program that has a lot of reliance upon the attendees behavior, attitude, honesty and the amount of work they're willing to do.

Not to mention the fact that CS Lewis is one of the foremost Christian writers of our time - so we can be pretty sure it wasn't about Buddhism or other religious concepts . . .

The exciting thing is when appliances and their stands/desks/cabinets are able to become conduits for power.
    No more messy wires.

Eventually, I would think this could be built into flooring and moulding in houses so there would be power running everywhere and we'd no longer have to worry about wires, placement of electronics close to outlets, extension cords, etc, etc.

  14. High Populations servers still plagued by crashes on Ask Questions of the World of Warcraft Team · · Score: 2, Interesting

I recently cancelled my two World of Warcraft accounts.
I'd been playing since Beta and with my guild and friends had defeated all but 1 of the 'end game' bosses, excluding the very new Blackwing Lair.

Despite what is being generally assumed in the gaming media, many servers are still not stable despite being 1 year into development after a lengthy alpha and beta test.

My server, Blackrock, being the highest population server must represent some extra challenges but why have you not been vocal and communicative about the almost constant instance and server crashes during peak play times?
(Before I canceled last week, one of the last nights I played Blackrock crashed 5 times in a row consecutively over the span of 2-3 hours AFTER a lengthy extra maintenance period that same week)

There have been reports that instance farmers, dupers and Raid cascading guilds are to blame for the massive server problems we've had in the last month but all of these are rumors, unconfirmed - and yet the problems continue with no official response of any form nor, more importantly, no specific drastic action to fix this long-standing problem.

In addition, why has Blizzard not locked out new players from starting off for the first time on Blackrock?
You have had 3 transfers periods for people to move from Blackrock to other servers and yet all it has done is allowed more free space to open up for other people to start over or for the first time on the "popular" server.
Why have you not 'locked' Blackrock and prevented the massive population problems that continuously plague it?

(For those unaware of the annoyance of instance resets or server restarts - it often meant that after spending 3-4 hours clearing through an end-game instance and defeating 3-4 bosses the instance server would boot you and you would eventually login back at the beginning with all of the 'trash' monsters respawned - requiring you to spend another 1-2 hours to clear back to where you left off. Sometimes this would happen more than once a night.)

I'll bet you that Pixar retain ownership of the models and that Disney has to re-create them.

You put it in to play/listen - it starts to skip and they're like, "Oh weird, how'd that happen?"

The worst is the scratcher-friends who craftily ask to borrow your favorite CD/DVD. (Because all of theirs are unwatch/unlistenable)
    So, you're all like "sure!"
You get it back after 2 months after bugging them for weeks about it and you open up the case to find . . . SCRATCHES ALL OVER THE DAMN DISC.

And you call them on it - and they say "What? I didn't put those there! It must've been like that when you gave it to me."
