  1. Doh... on Old Hard Drives = Free Electricity · · Score: 5, Insightful

Another post where it looks cool at first, but not really. So the guy used magnets FROM OLD HARD DRIVES (tech connection = yay) to power a standard homebrew generator. Whoopie. Of course, the hard thing, as in all electric generation, is getting the generator to spin, which isn't done with the hard drives. If he had powered up an old computer and used spinning hard drives to run a motor WHILE they were working, and powering a led from the spinning of the hard drives, that would have been cool. Sorry, not an impressive hack.

Don't give in man. The DMCA will eventually be overruled, using it to bully people into compliance makes you as bad as all the other companies who use it. Normal copyright laws make it illegal to break the lock or scale the fence, the DMCA makes it illegal to look at the gate. Sue the guy for breaking your copyleft license. That's breach of contract, I think, and I think you're entitled to the profits. IANAL, and this is not legal advice. So don't sue me.

Yikes. That's really confusing. To define stuff: 1. Ramdrive-a virtual memory drive created in RAM
    2. /home/$yourname/ -It's where you store your stuff in unix/linux
    3. USB memory stick-something like one of these
    4. CD-R: CD-recordable- it's write only, meaning you can only change it once by burning something to it. Compared to the CD-RW, which is a CD-rewritable, which can be written more than once.
    6. Boottime-when the computer starts up.

  17. Re:Home dir on memory stick? on Knoppix 3.2 Available · · Score: 4, Informative

To claify, say you want file winfix. It's not included on the Knoppix distro, so you make a USB memory stick with you home directory. You'd put winfix on that stick, and it'd register at boottime, and when it was fully loaded, your winfix file from the stick would be in /home/$yourname/, easily accessable. It's because 1. you can't write to a CD-R (duh) and 2. any files you create would be stored on a ramdrive, unless you acessed the hard drive, in which case they would be stored locally on that one box. Storing files on a USB memory stick allows you to keep all your knoppix tools and stuff togather. I hope this helps to clear things up.

If an area is completely covered by a conductor (such as a metal case), the electric field in the conductor will cancel to 0 (unless, of course, you have an electric field coming in through the conductor in an insulated wire (such as a power cord) leaving only the electric field created inside the metal. By this phenomanon, a case will be EMR shielded. However, plexiglass is an insulator, and would not provide this shielding. There aren't any definitive studies on this, but I wouldn't host a server on it or anything requiring perfect stability.

It's not about destroying one SUV. It's about encouraging the prevention of pollution from larger numbers of SUV's through the media and public attention and education. It's the same reason why peaceful demonstrations turn to riots. To get on TV. Right or wrong, this is the fact of the matter.
