  1. Re:Where do the hydrocarbons come from? on Lake On Titan Winks From a Billion Kilometers Away · · Score: 1

Our definition of life is biased as to what we have observed on this planet. So if we are looking for life that could sustain itself on our planet then the definition we use suffices. I for one, would rather not find a life form that can sustain itself on our planet due to all the documentaries / science fiction movies depicting our demise. Lets try to find life that has nothing to do with the life we know and endure on this planet and would die if it tried to live amongst us. Likewise, the aliens, don't want us to migrate to their neck of the woods either and be like a little brother wanting to tag along. The release of Avatar is happening galaxy wide simultaneously and they know what we intend to do. The good question is do you think that aliens somewhere else are watching Star Trek (original Series)? Would they think it was a documentary or understand its fictional content, all technological hurdles to translate and view aside... perhaps television earlier than that is like a repellant spray ... We just have to wait till they watch Star Trek and realize we've evolved a tad. They are probably affended by the all the cheesy scifi stuff.. or believe we kill aliens... ( What if it was thought to be real... how would they know fiction from reality? ) ...

  10. maybe on Consumer Reports Discovers Tech Support Sucks · · Score: 1

Maybe all of us less than fully employed could do at home tech support. I mean get an extra line and throw out your number for that line at businesses and people. Just have to figure out the charge system for it. I'm thinking of it just cause I could spend my time at slashdot and still be able to make a penny or two. Maybe that is how unemployed techies make some dough in this soft economy.

I wonder if it would take a grassroots type effort, where in which we unemployed, make some sort of Open Source Corporation or whatnot. I wonder if it has anything to do with the tech support moving to india and the confusion that is caused as the english is different.

I am not trying to flame, being that I am of indian decent. I just think if you are in country A, you'd prefer to have people of country A to communicate to you when asking for technical help. Maybe if this Open source corporation where to work, atleast taking on some contracts, or indicating some sort of success, that these big corporations would finally understand quality of service is a good thing.

  14. They are lazy on Artists Protesting Single-Song Downloads · · Score: 5, Insightful

This system rewards good music and consumer choice. I mean we all know this scenario quite well: You buy a cd and find that maybe three songs are good and the rest suck. Now why should we pay for stuff we don't want. Artists are lazy because they feel as long as they make one or two good songs the rest can be garbage and we still, those that purchase the cds, have to buy everything. As for the artists, they need to realize that they will make more money this way cause they could produce and sell song by song instead of trying to put up a bunch of songs together to make a cd. They also get to know exactly what songs are working and what are not by the amount each is downloaded.

Hey I'm going to school @ UTI. The web addy is like www.uticorp.com . You go to school to learn like your basics, if you have good grades you can go to the manufacturer's programs. Not just BMW, but Porsche, Mercedes, Volvo, VolksWagon. The fun part of going is the few classes that add up to make hotrod u : power and performance classes, street/hot rodding/ NOS ... I'm taking Diesel as well and industrial which adds refrigeration and hydraulics.

BMW's by the way use fiber optics to drive all sorts of systems. The courses I believe take 22 weeks.

I used to work in computers. Overclocking just doesn't feel the same when you tweak an engine and hear it break class and make car alarms cry.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about UTI , the BMW manufacturing program, let me know. I'll be glad to help. email: crea5e AT yahoo dot com.

You got to realize that in a way saving money can cost businesses more money in the longrun. I mean it's like a balancing act when it comes to the books. You want to be able to not pay taxes, to be able to write off as many expenses as possible. Also, it's a budget thing as well. In a way, by purchasing higher priced software, you are helping your self in the future. If you cut costs today, you will have to cut costs tomorrow. Management will expect that. It's the same penny game that corporations would do on earnings that stock analysts predict. They always have their books fudged or whatever it took to be a penny above the earnings estimates each quarter. This way the analysts aren't going to expect the world from you next quarter. It's like survival and the tale about the tortoise and the hare. Unfortunately, and I apologize in advance for the generalization, business has been about just doing enough to not get fired or just enough to last another quarter.
