    Dude, you're getting Mandrake!

RedHat is the real RPM hell. Mandrake is RPM heaven. I don't know about any of the other RPM distros, though.

    With Mandrake, it's easy:

    urpmi wuftpd

It will ask me if it's ok to download all of the other dependencies, so I enter "Y", and voila.. it downloads and installs them (assuming that your urpmi source lists are synched properly - it's not a bad idea to have a cron job to do 'urpmi.update -a' at 3 AM or so)

Debian's apt is very nice as well, but Debian's not right for everyone (in actuality, no distro or even OS is right for everyone, despite what FUD-flinging says). If you use Mandrake though, you can still fall back to the old rpm -ivh and install non-official packages (there are a lot of rpms out there, especially on SF)

I for one, think that the best place to reach out to get OSS rolling past the Juggernaut is to get our young programmers involved. After all, I don't think even Linus can hack from the grave.

With RedHat (and I suspect other RPM based distributions), they were 'guaranteed' money from me, since I wanted to upgrade.

Mandrake (an RPM based distribution) has urpmi, at the simplest level an apt-get for RPM. If I want to upgrade my whole system, I do:

    urpmi.update -a
    urpmi --auto-select

I can also just update a single package by doing urpmi foopackage; urpmi will even figure out the deps for me and download the packages. This is where Mandrake beats out RedHat, imho (Please Don't Flame Me!). But now I hear RedHat has such a feature... anyone?

not a political platform, no matter how RMS and a subset of its users try to turn it into one.

Agreed. I personally prefer the BSD license over the GPL, yet I use GNU/Linux every day, mainly because of the great community effort (as opposed to OpenBSD - I imagine Theo drives off most people ;)) to support it and develop it. I know several other people just like this, but on the other hand I know several who swear by the GPL and use a GNU/Linux system. RMS really needs to cool his head when it comes to generalizations (though some of his ideas are pretty cool).

I say, use whatever license suits you best - if you made a bad licensing choice, then you get to face the consequences.

Here is the quote from Al Gore:
"I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Creating != inventing. Inventing the Internet would have been thinking of the idea, and deciding a method of implementing it. Creating the Internet meant creating funding to buy necessary equipment and hire staff to create the network spanning the USA, which at the time they called the Internet (it has linked with similar European networks, as you all know, to create the modern Internet).

So what Al Gore meant (if you have enough time, read the entire interview with Wolf Blitzer) is that, while serving in the Senate, he was part of the group which pushed forward the initiative to create the Internet.
