what they have is a PC loyalty, most PC gamers, myself included hate console gaming,
Why? I mean really. PC and Console gamers are playing the SAME games these days. Sure there's platform exclusives, but the big games are multi-platform.
Same goes for Japanese developers...they just don't "get" the American market these days. In the old days, on consoles anyway, they didn't have fair competition, Nintendo and Sega obviously showing favor to fellow Japanese companies.
Now...they actually have to compete with top of the line formerly PC centric US and EU dev houses and they just can't do it.
Look at Sqaresoft/Square-Enix and FFXI, it came out after the lessons that could be learned from SCEA's EQOA (done by American team) and they still got it all wrong! It is actually less fun to play than EQOA was. Fucking SOE/SCEA's Free Realms is a more fun MMO than FFXI is.
I haven't played FFXIV, but hear it's an even WORSE grindfest than FFXI.
Yes, but that Deluxe model PS3 was probably a better gaming machine that a 2006 PC of the same price. A PS3 still holds it's own against that 300 dollar steambox. And what does he do on it...emulate. He'd have been better off plugging a CECHE model PS3 into that HDTV. His build doesn't even include an optical drive!
Besides what's the point of using an HTPC steambox if you're just going to play the same stuff that you can play on the PS3/360.
I'd be more impressed if people were playing STO, or DOTA/MOBA, or Diablo 3 with a gamepad in BPM.
There are these things called USB ports, they let you plug keyboards into them The PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Wii U all have them. There is also this thing called Bluetooth that also lets you connect keyboards wirelessly. There are also these things called "chatpads" which attach directly to the controller and are similar to keyboards on some cell phones.
Text entry on consoles hasn't been an issue in over 10 years.
A lot of these so called "indie" developers aren't all that indie. They've often been doing GBC/GBA/DS development or BREW/J2ME dev for pre iOS/Android phones for years. These are established successful businesses, using "indie" as a marketing gimmick for "street cred"
Now you have a smartphone or tablet right there with you.
There are people still who don't have second screens with internet access. There are actually people who don't own smartphone's or tablets.
Or just save your game and google your problem on the console.
I've done that.., works better if your console has linux so you can print something if you need to rather than trying to memorize or write things down.
There is just "something" about a nice thick paper gaming magzing though. I'm talking classic "Shoe" EGM, "Johnny England" OPM or Next Generation.
The organisation that makes the tax code, also puts out the software that will allow an individual to file a return.
That was the plan, believe it or not.
There was a time in ages past that the IRS figured out that going electronic would make everything better so they started doing so and allowed tax preparation agencies to file returns electronically. Said agencies did so for big bucks, when I first heard of it, it cost over $200.
The IRS then thought that e-file was such a good thing that everyone should be doing it and they decided to writer their own software, to give away and let everyone file electronically for free.
Then the tax preparation services got wind of it, and it was all over. The government was able to get a concession that the providers give free federal filing to people making lower incomes. However they now upsell state returns heavily.
In some states, however, the state government DOES supply free filing services themselves and the commercial tax preparation services/software are not involved. (In Illinois it's a web page, the PDF's of returns are produced with open source software)
Console RAM is specialized stuff, not standard PC style RAM. The PS2 used high speed Rambus RDRAM much much faster than PC RAM of the time...the PS2 had insane memory bandwidth.
the Xmas sale is always full of great games dirt cheap, so i can just tell them "here is what you have to spend, go nuts" and let them load up. ,
Since the submitter has a PS3 already there's this thing on the PS3 called "PSN" which has sales, and cheap games of all sorts.
will let you play netflixs and watch all your shows, and with Win 8 just $40 the 10 foot UI for kids is one of the few things Win 8 is actually good at so it seems like a no brainer to me, get the HTPC.
Considering they already have a PS3, that can do netflix, and already has a 10 foot UI without spending money on Win8 and Metro.... it's a no brainer to just supplement the PS3 with more games.
Or one could get the retro game collections that are available for the PS3/PS2/PS1. Works out best if it's a CECH(A/B/E) PS3, but even a Slim can run PSone games, Not even counting all the NeoGeo and PC-Engine/TurbographX stuff on PSN.
It doesn't matter because the market for backwards compatibility is a niche market. Only the most hardcore of the previous generation's fans want it, especially if it raises the price of the machine, the others who buy the system after the first couple of years...don't care. They'd rather have cheaper hardware.
So just to let you know, the majority of folks buying 360's or PS3's this year, probably don't have large Xbox or PS1/PS2 libraries. Those who did....already have their 360's and CECH(A/B/E) PS3's..
Cheaper for SCEA to re-master the best of the previous generation than keep on including additional hardware chips.
1. Before getting his job he was a babysitter, I think for a relative's children.
2. Said kids had an older game system connected to SDTV, same screen multi was favored.
3. Tepples desire to make games ultimately comes from that experience. He basically wants to make NES/SNES games, not realizing times have changed.
4. He wants to make console games, but since he's "one guy in a basement" no dev-kit for him. Because he knows his limitations, suggesting that he join some established dev house is rebuffed. For someone like tepples, a major cross country move to silocon valley or redmond or some large city would be harder for him, let alone the interview.
5. His portfolio is knock-offs, mostly tetris clones with slightly modded rules. Being what he is, original ideas are not his forte, and he knows it...he's a "hyperfocused robotic parrot" with his: "what about SDTV, or same screen multi, or people who watch sports, or people with only one system or PC, or people who live in bumfuck Indiana." It's not trolling, he's just that focused on the edge cases, because he was/is one..
I work with people with autism. while it sometimes exists alongside developmental disabilities, it doesn't always. He's not "retarded" (that term is frowned upon), he just has a disability.
Dust514 Unreal Tournament (on PS2 and PS3) Red Faction Deus Ex Half Life on PS2 (but sadly, not the Orange Box on the PS3) Tribes (PS2)
I wouldn't say it's "common" but it's common enough that one should check. Support for mouse and Keyboard often isn't listed on the box or sometimes even the manual even if it does have it, the PS2 version of Deus Ex is an example of that.
If it came down to it, so you think any president would want to send the army to fight against people who were US citizens until only a few months ago?
Why yes, since it happened before....the president who did was from Illinois. The people who want to secede say they are of his party....but seem to disavow everything he stood for.....they even want to disavow HIM, refusing to use his name on the day they celebrate their party. Those people have more in common with Jefferson Davis than they do Lincoln.
Umm, the low population states DON'T pay for their own infrastructure. Alaska, Montana, Idaho, etc etc...are net receivers of Federal money. Same goes for the old confederacy... the "Red" states are the states that are MORE dependent on federal money.
Illinois, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, even California...could survive on their own...easy. They'd actually come out ahead, dollar wise.... Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, etc.....couldn't.
See the problem is here that some rural folks like you "THINK" the big cities are freeloaders and all the money is going north...but in fact...it's the reverse. I live in central illinois and I know for a fact that without massive federal and state spending...my county couldn't afford the instracture it has now...let alone improving it or replacing it. check you local newspaper for how many times your local politicians say: "we're looking into a sate or federal grant" or "we're looking into federal/state funding" or "we got matching funs for...." My county couldn't keep it's roads maintained without federal money..
The true "Welfare Queens", are the red states and red counties.
More than 1/5....cook county alone has 5 million people in a state that has about 12 million. But Chicago subsidizes downstate which can't afford to pay for their own infrastructure, because that's where the money and people are.
Yep, it was Fallen and similar creatures....at least in the PSone version.
what they have is a PC loyalty, most PC gamers, myself included hate console gaming,
Why? I mean really. PC and Console gamers are playing the SAME games these days. Sure there's platform exclusives, but the big games are multi-platform.
So it comes down to NCSoft not wanting to have to try to create/market/sell games that appeal to whatever the Korean word for "gaijin" is?
Same goes for Japanese developers...they just don't "get" the American market these days. In the old days, on consoles anyway, they didn't have fair competition, Nintendo and Sega obviously showing favor to fellow Japanese companies.

You can't extrapolate from a few Slashdot nerds to the general populace. Slashdot is a niche culture.

Sony's XrossMediaBar is actually 9 years old, it was first used in the PSX, SCEJ's Japan-only PS2/DVR combo device.
XMB won an Emmy in 2006 you know, and I don't think it wastes space at all, at least it doesn't on my TV. Are you using SDTV?
Yeah but those are for ppl too stupid to game on the PC so who cares?
That seems a funny thing to say when PC and console gamers are playing the same games.
1999 called, it wants it's argument back.

The Cell's PPE is also multithreaded and has an altivec unit.
Console RAM is specialized stuff, not standard PC style RAM. The PS2 used high speed Rambus RDRAM much much faster than PC RAM of the time...the PS2 had insane memory bandwidth.
The PS3 is similar with Rambus supplied XDRAM.
What should I know about moving and being able to afford living while I search for a job? Is driving necessary?
The very fact that you are asking those questions, means you'll never be ready.
Let's say I were to make a platformer not closely based on any existing product. Would that be enough to shake this "only makes knockoffs" perception?
It might.
the Xmas sale is always full of great games dirt cheap, so i can just tell them "here is what you have to spend, go nuts" and let them load up. ,

Only if he's still got Linux on it.
Besides, many of the posters are recommending "indie" games, most of which aren't all that graphically intensive and would run fine on a PS3.
It doesn't matter because the market for backwards compatibility is a niche market. From what I gather:
1. Before getting his job he was a babysitter, I think for a relative's children.

A few from off the top of my head:
Dust514
Unreal Tournament (on PS2 and PS3)
Red Faction
Deus Ex
Half Life on PS2 (but sadly, not the Orange Box on the PS3)
Tribes (PS2)
I wouldn't say it's "common" but it's common enough that one should check. Support for mouse and Keyboard often isn't listed on the box or sometimes even the manual even if it does have it, the PS2 version of Deus Ex is an example of that.
