The way I see it, there are several things wrong with the email services available today, and I'm seriously considering starting a company to provide a solution. 1) Limited spam filtering 2) Small file attachment limits 3) Lack of support for encryption 4) Insufficient storage space 5) Forced advertising 6) Excessive cost 7) Restricted access methods (I.E. HTML only) Here is my proposed solution service: 1) Unlimited whitelists, blacklists, and filter rules, along with a choice of RBLs. 2) An attachment limit of 10megs 3) A vendor committed to allow encryption including storage of keys if desired. 4) 20megs storage space with more on demand. 5) Zero advertising 6) Both HTML and POP3 access Would you anyone be willing to pay a dollar a month for such a service, and is there anything else you'd add to the list?

I think most of the posters are going at this problem from the wrong direction. Personally I'd spend a few days checking out all the job websites (monster, dice, etc.) then work backwards. Once you know what is in demand, train yourself to fit that. Personally I lean towards maintenance/support because they always need someone around who can fix the darn thing when its broken, and when have you ever seen a system that is maint free? Also you should consider what area you live in, I recommend moving to somewhere that has a high percentage of jobs in your area. For example there are 169 jobs for Systems Administrator listed on monster.com for southern califonia right now. Even for development it looks pretty good, over 284 jobs posted. You need to have a degree and the certs, but other than that, business is still good if you know what the heck you're doing, its just the paper techs, and people with overinflated salary expectations who are out of work.

  17. Re:Too much space on Ars Technica Reviews Mozilla · · Score: 1

Oh, I know that, but I need some of those tools, and I don't want to be constantly collapsing and expanding my toolbars. For example on my IE toolbar I've got the following all on one line. File (which lets me access printing) A drop down indicator so I can access all the other less used menus, back/forward/stop/refresh, address bar, google bar with search site button, and my links folder. Very small, and all used daily, most of the other stuff I never use. If I can figure out how to do something similiar in Mozilla, I'll be a happy camper.

  18. Too much space on Ars Technica Reviews Mozilla · · Score: 1

I'm an IE 5.5sp2 user. Our shop is mostly win2k at this point but we're slowly migrating towards linux. I'd like to use Mozilla, instead of IE. The tabs and no pop ups are very cool. However there is one main problem for me. I've tried a number of different skins, and finally settled on the IE one, although some of the others like orbit looked nice. But in IE I can move the toolbars around and resize them, as far as I can tell I can't do that in Mozilla unless I want to learn a custom programmming language. On my IE I have all tools in a single narrow bar across the top, and I've removed all the buttons I never use. Mozilla on the other hand is a screen space PIG, I mean i takes up like a good two inches at the top of my screen and I run at 1024x768. Some of my users are still at 640x480, no way can we switch over, they wouldn't be able to see the websites. I looked at tiny mozilla, and while that was a little smaller (and alot uglier) its not enough. Does anyone out there know a solution to this?

What is wrong with some of you people? Accusing Piers Anthony of pedophilia? I mean come on, aren't you stretching things JUST A TAD, and why is it that a number of people complained about how they felt he objectifies women, but didn't bother to say anything about the violence included in his novels.
He writes what sells, which in case you hadn't noticed is three things violence, sex, and intrigue. Personally I see nothing wrong with this, and in fact encourage it, any book or movie that doesn't have these things is likely to be boring as heck.
Suppose just for a moment that those accusations are true about pedophilic leanings and objectification (which I for one don't think so without gross exaggeration). IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T F***ING READ IT. There are numerous books out there which depict gay male sex in a graphic way which I personally find rather disgusting, but that doesn't mean I support censoring them, I just don't read those books. Try and accuse them of writing innappropriately, and remove their books from the shelves and I'll be one of the first ones up in arms to save them, even if I personally wouldn't want to read them under any conditions.

There is a very good reason I don't switch to OsX. I don't feel like giving a company control over my PC. As long as Apple monopolizes the hardware, I'll never switch. I've been a M$ user since DOS 5.0, and for the most part I've been happy with it because it lets me do want I want with my computer. I'm running win2kpro now, and pretty satisfied. However I don't think I'll ever upgrade to XP or Longhorn, I'm seriously considering moving to Mandrake instead. M$ has gone to far, Register my computer every time I change the hardware? I don't think so, none of their damn business. Palladium, no way, its my box, not yours. .NET, aren't we having enough security problems as it is? Replacing the filesystem with a central database, talk about the end of user intervention. Basically, any one company that thinks they can control my machine and how I use it, is going to go the way of the dodo as far as I'm concerned.
