IT is notorious for being stubborn and difficult, and not just when "managers want to do something stupid and retarded". They seem to enjoy the Easy Out(tm) of just saying "no", more than actually figuring out solutions to real business issues. It's even worse if your IT dept is outsourced to someone like EDS.
I think the entire IT industry needs to wake up and get their ridiculous self-importance under control.
I used to work in IT for many years, and have seen both sides of it. Of course since this is an IT site I will no doubt get modded Troll. *shrugs*
This isn't true, at least in Canada. We had our debit/ATM cards duplicated by some criminals once, they withdrew $2500 over three days from our chequing account, but when we notified the bank they gave us all our money back.
It's not in the power company's interest to rat out people with grow-ops. Assuming the people are paying their bills in a timely manner, they are a good profit centre for the power company.
You're crazy if you think Apple isn't in BOTH the Business-to-Consumer and Business-to-Business models. Their Business-to-Consumer model is what makes their Business-to-Business model worth something.
I largely agree with your post, but, one correction: the BFG was actually balanced. Sure, it was powerful as shit, but it was also super slow, comparatively.
Uh, just get rid of your cell phone? They aren't necessary, they are just convenient. I don't use one and nor does my wife, we make our plans the old fashioned way, home phone and email.:)
This would be terrible, if it happened. Once libraries are gone, the only way to get books will be to buy them. The digital versions will be (eventually) perfected with water-tight DRM so we lose one of the fundamental abilities of a book - it's ability to be lent out without restriction.
As someone currently developing an app for the Playbook I can tell you that article is mostly b/s.
It's hard to defend the RIM setup, because it's a bit absurd, but it's not nearly as bad as this guy is making it out to be.
Let's take a couple things off the table right away: > pricing - well yeah i guess that sucks for but now it's free so don't worry about it > AIR SDK installer - well he can't put this on RIM because this is an Adobe package. honestly is installing an SDK hard for any developer?
As for the rest of his rant, if he just used Flash Builder instead of compiling from the command line he would have quite easily been able to deploy an app to the simulator without any problems. You can get a free license for it from Adobe as well. It's a reasonably ok workflow, and if you've used eclipse before you will have a good grasp of what to do.
Honestly my biggest complaint is how incomplete the simulator seems to be at this point, there is still loads of the API that does not work in the simulator, and last update I got they completely broke sound:(
There is still oil on Alaskan beaches today. Today! The Valdez spill happened in 1989. 22 years later there is still oil on the beaches. You think this is ok? If that was a beach your kids played on you wouldn't be ok with that, even if "all species known there before were present". That's just bullshit talk to make people think everything is fine and not address the truth.
You are not thinking your position through if you are using the Valdez disaster (yes, disaster, stop trying to minimize it by calling it an "incident") as a model of success here.
And this is the problem with allowing big business to violate the environment. No matter how much they can assure us nothing will go wrong, something generally does go wrong and then we're screwed. Sure we "fined them" and "made them pay for the cleanup" but still the ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico got badly damaged and will take a long time to recover (2012 my ass - shit, there is still oil on beaches in Alaska from the Valdez spill, that happened decades ago).
When will we learn that there are some risks we just shouldn't take.
Um, won't this just mean their next logical step will be to file suit against HDFury to close this "loophole"?
The fact that HDFury gets around this screams a lawsuit just waiting to be filed. Make no mistake, they will close every loophole they can, any way they can.
Just because the US is embarrassed by this stuff doesn't mean Iran or North Korea are going to gain more power or influence anywhere in the world.
You said a lot of nice stuff there but it's all predicated on this largely incorrect presumption.
"If you don't have the resources to conduct such a review, give the docs to a news organization which does."
Um. They did this. They gave it to a bunch of news organizations. They also did not release all the cablegate files en-masse, un-redacted. Have you even been paying attention?
Not only that, but if you followed the news, one of the cops involved in that incident later got real drunk, drove home, and on the way hit a motorcyclist and killed him....and guess what, pretty much got off:-/
"Delta police initially recommended that Robinson be charged with impaired driving causing death, but senior prosecutors ruled that available evidence did not establish the criminal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Instead, he was charged with the lesser charge of obstruction of justice."
Actually I wasn't suggesting anything about migrating projects from Flash Pro to Flash Builder:)
Agreed, that would be a pain for precisely the reasons you've mentioned, but my point was that I am 100% for the name change to Flash Builder because I think it more accurately describes what the software does - create flash files (swfs).
See, I never got that complaint (the name change).
Flex Builder and Flash Professional both create flash files (SWFs). The only difference is that, in general, people that use Flex Builder, also use MXML and the Flex framework.
But, you can still create Actionscript-only projects in Flex Builder that don't use the Flex framwork, and you can easily integrate Flash Professional into your workflow if you need to include timeline animations and so forth by publishing out assets from your FLA as an SWC that you can include in Flash Builder.

I guess largely because that information is part of public records?

Way to steal that joke from XKCD, man.

Well there is certainly no shortage of ignorance.

Well you can either get this, if you qualify:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-archive/flex/free/
Or you can just download eclipse use that, the command line compiler and SDK are free.

I'm with FTWinston on this:
"A fool and his money are soon parted"
Amen to that!
Sometimes critical mass is achieved in a fraction of a second!
"No corporation is required to have a succession plan. Why should Apple?"
Because their shareholders want one, and the shareholders pay the bills.

"does this mean if Adobe tries to release it's tools again "
The tools are already released, they are still included with Flash CS5 (Packager for iPhone). Developers can start using them today if they want.
Not only that, but if you followed the news, one of the cops involved in that incident later got real drunk, drove home, and on the way hit a motorcyclist and killed him....and guess what, pretty much got off :-/

They seem to have been loving shipping Bumptop on all their touch-enabled PCs and laptops. I wonder if this will change things for them.

I really like Flash Builder but I don't use the Flex framework or MXML at all. The fact that Adobe is still continuing to give it away through their "broke and unemployed developers" program is icing on the cake.
