I signed up the day my wife asked for one, I got an SMS the next morning while eating breakfast. Walked downstairs to my home office and bought it online from Circuit City.
I had lots of web related issues (bloated websites not loading or taking forever, etc) with a stock 512mb EEE Pc. Looking at usage, it was simply out of memory.
I tossed 2gb in it ($29 for a 2gb Corsair module onsale), recompiled the kernel so it uses all 2gb, and haven't had a problem since. FWIW, I also tried sticking a 512mb SD in it and setting up swap...that solved most of the issue as well. No, I didn't leave it configured. It was just a test.
Damn well, with the caveats of a small screen size and small keyboard.
The "easy mode" is just a customized icewm. A quick hack loads full KDE if you like, but I actually haven't bothered. Ctrl-alt-T brings up an xterm even in easy mode, and I just do everything through that.
I recompiled the kernel (to support 2gb memory - the hardware supports 2gb but the default kernel only supports 1gb, as it wasn't compiled with large memory support) and installed openvpn and gprs (cell modem) support via an external usb bluetooth dongle...there is nothing I can't do on it remotely (openvpn in to my network, run ssh and firefox for internal websites). It even nicely runs our main product, a gargantuan java app.
His dates are off. Iolo the game character was indeed based off Iolo the SCA member who was a real life friend of Lord British, the author of the Ultima games.
A day doesn't go by when my Series3 TiVo doesn't tell me some HD programming it recorded is not authorized for display over an HDMI connection. (WTF?! Component I could understand, but why the hell would it prevent playing over HDMI?) So far I've managed to get around it by one or more of going back to Now Playing and selecting the recording again, turning the HDTV off and back on, or turning the HDMI switchbox between them off and back on. This why I chose not to bother with HDMI when I built my new HD system and just use component video and digital audio instead. I can't tell the difference, to be honest. (I did make sure I *have* HDMI capability, hoping they fix the crap, but I'm not holding my breath.)
Component is a "good enough" picture, especially when the alternative is suffering the look from Wife 2.0 (I upgraded to the model with the nicer case) when, Cthulhu forbid, she can't watch Dancing with the Stars because of some HDMI BS.
Oh, so he'll be free to testify, since he's certainly not acting like a President now.
What you actually meant is that he cannot be compelled to testify while in office. Once he's out, he's like any other citizen, and can be compelled by a subpoena...to which he'd then invoke Executive Privilege (I wonder if its called something else once you are out of office?).
Check out the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) -- its got all your HD tools, memtest, and tons of other useful software.
On a side note, I used it to make PXE boot versions of the HD tools and memtest. I can't tell you how easy and cool it is to netboot a machine in my office to diagnose a drive or run memtest.
We use http://www.systemimager.org/ for this. Desktops get installed via PXEBOOT and DHCP for their identity and mount homedirs and other data via NFS. Nightly updates (via rsync controlled by SystemImager) keep all the desktops identical. If someone installs something it just goes away at midnight unless the image is updated. Logins are OpenLDAP/Kerberos.
Oh, and *second* slot!! I mean, who would have thought!
IMHO, having such a stupid number of character slots compaired to every other MMORPG around was one of the reasons for its lack of staying power.
I've played EQ, AO, DAOC, E&B, WOW...In every one, I've gotten bored with a character for a while and played another. Having to do that on a completely different *server* sucked beyond belief.
I can't believe Apple didn't have the update for older iPods include the improved battery life.
The improved battery life is almost certainly a HARDWARE change. How the hell are you supposed to update that?
Oh, that was answered earlier as well. A firmware upgrade for old iPods is available, for around $300-$400, at the Apple Store...and you get a replacement headset, free!
Without a doubt SS2 was one of the best games, ever.
I preordered it, and ended buying a copy when I saw it on the shelf...I'd been playing for 14 hours straight when the FedEx guy showed up with the preorder copy.
So I paid about $100 for the game, and it worth every damn penny.
A coworker used the Xerxes "attention" tone on his PC...I used my SysAdmin powers to "convince" him (read: I turned his ethernet port off on the switch) to change it...it gave me goodbumps every time I'd hear it down the corridor late at night.
The datacenters I've had gear located in have had great security. IN YOUR CAGE. They were very upfront about "if you leave your stuff laying around or your cage unlocked there's a good chance it'll be liberated."
Don't know which CoLo centers you've been frequenting, but almost every one I've been in (dozens, including MAE West and East, and lots of Worldcom/MCI centers) had pitiful security.
Need *any* tool? Ethernet on another network? Spare ATM card?
Just reach into another cage and grab it, or climb over the chain link fence into the next cage.
On at least 2 occasions I got center personnel to give me access to a COMPETITOR'S cage to "troubleshoot a downed system" (i.e. I needed a tool).
I'm in the process of moving to a house where I may not be able to get a clear view of DirecTV's satellite and may have to go with cable. Since I also can't get DSL there, its cable modem time.
(Yes, there are lots of other reasons to move. Shut up.)
In compairing DirecTV to Cox Cable, it seems like each "tier" has only one damn channel I (or the wife) want, so we're forced to get the most expensive service.
Its clear that the cable company has bundled those "tiers" so that happens.
I'd *love* a-la carte programming, but it'll never happen.
Step 5... shout DAMNIT even louder when you try to type something and discover that the punctuation keys are completely different on a US keyboard to a UK keyboard. You can get round this with mappings but it is very annoying (not $1000 annoying but annoying nonetheless). If you were not aware of this already, then be aware as you will need to re-learn a few keys, and it can be very annoying if you are switching between US-UK computers/keyboards.
Or, spend $40 and buy a UK Dell keyboard off ebay.
The most recent time I had my Dell laptop repaired the tech mentioned he often sold "extra" parts real cheap on ebay.

Already done.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iolo
Iolo is still around and making crossbows via his website, New World Arbalest - http://www.crossbows.net/.
I have a #4 (Flemish design, 15-16th century) with a 75lb prod. Great fun for target archery!
I'm unsure if he's still active in the SCA, however.
Two words: Final Fantasy.
Bioshock 2?
Would you kindly tell me where I can buy that?
(Yes, I know it was a typo, would you kindly get the joke?)
(Bush cannot testify while acting as President)

This works fantastically well.
From my experiences with HR, you'll be rebuilding the pieces for months, and still it won't work right.
There is a reason I work in academia. Corporate HR are the lowest form of life, even lower than Marketing.
WoW the next Google!
Like Google, large parts of it certainly appear to still be in beta...

No, they haven't. Its quite annoying, too. Blizzard's stated reason is crap ("We don't want everyone jumping on just a few server").
My friends and I are resorting to "The first server starting with 'Ti' or just 'T' if there isn't a 'Ti'".
But its about the only complaint I have about WoW. I love it otherwise!
Its sad. I glanced at the title out of the corner of my eye and saw "CowboyNeal Found to be as Healthy as Wine"
Still, I'm glad. Now to go have a Guinness and begrudge my lost towel...

Also, XP SP2 has Messenger off by default.
And the software firewall is on by default.
Thats a great idea, but it kills the network scanning some Universities are doing to look for infected machines.

I just got a CDRW/DVD combo for $15.
There is water on Mars. The ICE CAPS were first noticed about FOUR HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
Ah, yes...along with the canals filled with water.
The "ice caps" may be water...or some other frozen liquid.
But using 400 year old "evidence" isn't gonna cut it.
"Can Linux do this?"
No, it requires a mouse.
Don't think so... try xclip
