    Maybe one day the internet can be used to catch people with criminal tendencies. By monitoring the actions of the young, say ages 5 to 12, I am sure an algorithm can be made that can predict with 95%+ certainty which people will end up commiting violent crimes. Society could protect itself by locking these people up before the violence.

    Something like in Minority Report? Jail people BEFORE they actually commit a crime? Is this where the Soviet Russia jokes start to trickle in?

    It was my understanding the public libraries were not allowed to install filters to prevent this sort of thing. Now I'm hearing the public shouldn't do this in the libraries. I'm not condoning what the public did. It's not reasonable to say the people aren't allowed but we won't try to stop you.

    I understand some may consider this illegal. I'm not saying I'm giving or selling copies either. I'm saying that it's a backup copy of the original media for personal use only.

    Does anyone know if the DMCA has been tried in court yet? If so, any links? I'm curious about this angle.

    I had the same concerns. Then we learned about MythTV and started ripping our DVD's over to Myth. Now our kids can pick any movie from the list without danger to our DVD's.

    The original DVD's are placed in our storage room for safe keeping and we get to watch these great movies with little worry.

    Of course there is always the problem where the kids were pulling the power plug on the Myth box. After the third time of being unable to watch watch "Little Mermaid" they decided to stop pulling the plug.

    I can just see it now. Email's about somebody's Grand Uncle who left 10 bazillion dollars in some account they need your help getting access to. Except now they use an anonymizer to send them.

    I can understand why they want to hide :-)

    Had an employer like this once before (who hasnt?). After the third day I told them I had a couple weeks vacation and left on a trip out of state. He apparently thought I would be at home and tried calling. Didn't like the fact he couldn't reach me while on vacation.

    Basically I told him vacation means leaving the office behind. For that matter, quitting means leaving the company behind :-)

    If you have vacation time then I'd take it. You will arrive at your new company less stressfull and they get a great employee ready to go full steam. Sure it might sound like you are leaving the company in a lurch but remember, you ARE leaving them. They will simply have to get over it and move on. That's life.

    Put simply, people are sick and tired of their Microsoft Applications failing regularly or the viri/worms out there (the two biggest complaints I hear). They come to me for help with a variety of problems and would like my opinion.

    Sure Open Source has it's own set of issues. The thing I usually end up telling is to create a list of what they expect from their computer. Next write a list of what Microsoft provides (good and bad) along with a list for Open Source products. Whichever one reduces your annoyance level wins :-)

    Why these people put up with it most likely can be put into two categories: 1) ignorance, and 2) laziness. Either they don't know there are viable options, or they are too lazy to actually pursue said options.

    I agree. Used Ghost for years however it's still a waste of time having to rebuild a system over and over again.

    I swear. Just when you thought they made something idiot proof, they went out and made a better idiot :-)

    One positive thing happened when we decided it was taking a significat part of my day. We were able to push for standards (both hardware and software). People hated it but it reduced my torture time :-)

    ... time spent cleaning up 0wned Windows boxes is expensive.

    Many moons ago before I saw the light and abandoned Microsoft products as a way of life, I spent an average of 15-20% of my time recovering 0wned Windows systems. Sometimes it required a complete reinstall because the system was so screwed up. I feel for anyone stuck doing that. Not to mention how boring after the Nth time it happens.

    I understand that same company now runs UNIX/Linux systems and has even started testing various Linux Desktop solutions. Companies simply want out (not to mention save a few bucks). Sounds like a chance to propose a migration and build a test case.

    If I'm reading reports on this correctly, they are using those files to pull via IE. If you block all functionality of IE and use Netscape or Firefox they couldn't infect/abuse your system.

    I've seen this sort of technique used over the web before. It's sad the MPAA/RIAA have resorted to something Internet Thugs have been using for some time already.

    Personally, I would recommend using P2P over Linux/BSD and MPlayer myself. Less of a headache.

    BTW, 20 to 30 who have purchased a SCO license doesn't impress me considering how many use Linux thoughout the world. Now if they said a few thousand then I would be worried.

    The general point of my argument is if I purchase/use software which another had written then I am not liable for their code. If I OTOH contributed code which belongs to another and don't have the right to distribute that code then sure I'm liable.

    A user isn't liable for software written by another person/company. My argument with the newspaper should demonstrate the absurdity of this companies threat.

    If you are presently using the software application "Mambo OS" in any release post October 3, 2003, you and your organization are potentially exposed to CIVIL LITIGATION and possibly CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

    If people/companies can be sued for just using software then our legal system would be in worse shape than it is today.

    I've had this argument time and time again with people online. Just by USING something doesn't make you guilty of breaking the law. If I contributed however, well, that's another story altogether.

    For example, if I put something into the New York Times that I didn't have business submitting then sure I'm liable. If I merely purchased a copy of the paper and read it then I'm not liable.

    Our courts might be messed up but they are not stupid :-)

    Anybody remember those "WinModems" from back when? Don't remember if they are still around but Linux for some time didn't work with those either. Now it's not all that difficult to make one operate just fine. Microsoft can make whatever industry changes they want. DeMoCrAt's can't make it non-operable for long. It's ok to reverse engineer if you are trying to maintain compatibility. Exactly what's going to happen ... again
