My father taught me an important rule about guns in general. It is better to have it, and never need it than to need it and not have it. Getting to the subject of buglars, I own a firearm. And I have a small dog, 15 -> 20 pounds. I might actually get one of these. You remember when the joystick with atari game came out what last year? I had to pass that one up. My old Atari 2600 works and I still use it to play those games.
No offense but that sucks. He needs ot be kicked in his ass. I dropped out around 16 or 18 and was told if I wasn't gonna go to school I would have to work. And work I did. Some 13 years later and I work a straight 40 hour week and do side work every Saturday. On the brighter note 10 years ago I went and got my GED, and now I'm going for my CompSci degree. My time in between school was spent learning what I wanted, reading books tech manuals anything that I could learn something from.
I agree about the school systems. My reason for leaving was that I didn't feel I should have to sit in a classroom for 7 hours a day wasting my time, while someone shoved crap that I had been learning for 4 years down my throat. Seems like every year I learned about the revolutionary war.
And to top it all off, the last 3 years I have spent in college maths have been to catch me up to where I should have been. Seems 2 years of high school and all they wanted ot teach us was COnsumer Math. Ironic how the author talks about a society of workers, should have added consumers too. They didn't want me to know how to solve and equations with two variables and two unknowns, but they damn sure wanted me to know how much I was saving at a 20% off sale.
I have read many good suggestions, having come from stricly Windows myself sometime ago, 3 things were indispensable to me 1) learning how to question either searching through man or on teh web 2) software installation / compiling kernel ( let them install the OS on the computers you have set aside / it'll breed familiarity very quickly. ) 3) tell em not to fight the OS, that was my biggest obstacle. Rembering that I was in control of the OS and not pointing it where I wanted to go. Here is a good analoy, Windows is like a horse, you direct it to where you want it to go, but it won't do it precisely how you want. *nix is more like a car. You can steer it precisely where and how you want it to go.

a) our friend the priest was accessing a PUBLIC WIFI AP
b) it was from a Library offering PUBLIC NET access
c) it is illegal (according to Boss Hog) to access a PUBLIC ACCESS spot (even though the range allows you to) from outside that building.
You know it makes me wonder, how many of these laws are real. The articles author could have hopped into the library to look it up. It would not at all surprise me to see that no law exists concerning Public WIFI AP's. Ok true people have dl'd kiddie pr0n on other peoples bandwidth but still. The ones doing that aren't going to stop because now it's a Federal Law. I would have searched for that law. Printed it out and had I found nothing even remotely close. We don't need internal travel papers, or to even show our ID's. What we need is to say FUCK bieng POLITICALLY CORRECT and racially profile. You can say, "well thats racist" you know what, it wasn't Jewish, German, black, Russian, nor white people that commited the terrorist acts that led to our whole country losing freedoms. It was a radical Islamic sect comprised of Arabic men.

To solve your problem(s) here are a few suggestions.
You are at University. Is there a music lab? Is there a Computer Science dept? Is there an electronics dept? If you can answer yes to 3 of these question most of your problems can solve themselves. Talk to the Deans of those departments, explain your needs and suggest that the students in these depts may participate in the construction of what you need for their labs or projects. I'm sure you would have students banging down the door to work on a project. My point is, use what you have available.
I read a few posts down that someone "couldn't handle, dropped out of college because of professors like this". Well to me this sounds like a lesson with a deeper meaning than just some sort of useless project. Perhaps it is an effort to show how even the simplest of experiments present difficult logistical problems.
I recently upgraded my gaming box from Win98SE. I had been running SE for almost 7 years. It is close to impossible ( note I didnt say it was impossible ) to own a 98 box. I have friends that work for the NSA in cyber crimes. I challenged one to hack my unfirewalled, unpatched, stock cd version of Windows 98. After three months he gave up. Unless a user uses IE and actually believes that Popup message stating they have spyware or a virus and they need to click here. Then 98 is more secure than any other Windows version from a standard install. And yes it is on high speed net connection.

I could have saved her 79 and 1/2 hours and $800 A free download of BHO Deamon would have found the offending Spyware in record time.
