I thought the plan was to gather a monthly fee, and in exchange we do whatever the fuck we want, and the industry pisses off to count their money.
Whats this advertisement supported stuff? How are you going to feed ads into my p2p app, or download of choice? The only scheme I could think of is one where they force me to watch ads, and if I don't watch enough, I get a bill.
What this is, is charging everybody for a service nobody wants. This is akin to Comcast dumping some dipshit golf channel into basic cable, and charging everybody for it. In fact, that's exactly what it is. A dumbass online "music channel" I don't want, and I surely don't want to pay for.
I want to know which ISPs aren't going to pony up to this new extortion racket, so I can recommend them and switch if needed.
I came up with this kooky business model to make a lot of money, and for a while it made a lot of money.
I thereby conclude it should be made law, since it is profitable to me, and it should be illegal for anybody to change the world around my business model in a way that might invalidate it.
After all, we know that modern American society consists of only "corporate citizens" and "consumers". It should be obvious to any observer that the constitution only grants rights to citizens.
It's just "rewriting" in manager speak, since "rewriting" implies you did it "wrong" in the first place.
When, in truth, it's not about right or wrong, since anything that works is right (and to many, anything that compiles), but it's about "better", and "better" could mean maintainability, portability, testability, or whatever metric of the month they're using.
I once created a little code-gen to assist unit testing a particular functionality of a project. Basically, any time a field engineer or tester found a bad instance, they could use a tool I provided to instrument on the running assembly and "snapshot" some input data, and basically hand me a failing unit test, which I could then fix. There were tons and tons of combinations that crashed this thing, it was broke all to hell when I took ownership of it.
The bad data started flowing in, the code got really strong really fast, and really quickly I had added a couple hundred unit tests to the automated build. And I got bawled out for it, since "number of unit tests written" was apparently the metric management had decided to use to see how good the coders are, and since I was suddenly producing an order of magnitude more than others, I was "cheating". It wasn't like the tests were just trivial permutations of data, every one of these things was an edge case that was borking the code. By comparison, most of the handwritten unit tests I was seeing were really just useless dickstroking permutations of Assert.IsTrue(awesome == me);
The fact that they could finally ship the product with this particular feature working and tested was lost on them.
Everyone has PHB stories, because everyone has (or has had) a PHB.
Most federal agents would never abuse the data they gather with an illegal wiretap. So, are you cool with PATRIOT yet?
Nobody cares about this "most muslims" misdirection. It is irrelevant.
There are a non-trivial amount that behave in exactly the way the grandparent described. There are ENTIRE NATIONS built upon the interpretation of islam the grandparent describes. In fact, there are entire coalitions of nations that do so.
The ugly fact is, that this small vocal minority of muslims is right now condemning the rest of the religion to death by atomic fire in the next century.
They simply will not allow other cultures to exist. One day, you will wake up and realize that there is no compromise, and no religion of peace. You will sadly see that it really is "us or them". I'm guessing you'll submit to sharia law, as interpreted by whatever holy dingbat is interpreting it that day. I won't, I like my freedom. I'll be smiling quietly as I watch the news reports showing the charred bodies being stacked up and dumped into mass graves, knowing that humanity can now get back on track.
It would be nice to think there's another option, but there isn't.
Stock up on your 200 dollar light bulbs. Spend, spend, and spend your way to a greener earth, like a good American consumer! This "green technology" stuff isn't a bunch of marketing bullshit this time, I PROMISE!
I'm sticking with 25 cent incandescents, and turn the lights off when they aren't in use.
I'm not joking, all the extra cost is for all the extra development and testing time for the drivers, and for much better support when things break.
Other than that, there have been plenty of bios mods over the years that turn regular video cards into their workstation counterparts, but of course, you don't get any support.
About 20 years ago a local eatery called The Olympic Restaurant was shut down for the same reason. Suddenly they got to trademark the word Olympic, when previously they couldn't.
This was about the same time they realized that "official sponsor of the olympics" was worth big bucks.
These guys on the IOC are the most criminally corrupt shitbags on the planet. I've hated the olympics ever since I realized this about 15-20 years ago.
I realize most slashdotters have no children (and are statistically unlikely to), but I need to explain something.
When it comes to matters of religion and philosophy, kids are going to take a cue from their parents, and make their own conclusions, just like we did. A child can be told all about intelligent design, but it doesn't mean they'll believe it. It isn't some grand conspiracy to "ruin science".
The people on both sides of this fight are childless morons, eager to tell people how to raise their children. But both sides are fighting a futile fight.
It really doesn't matter to me what any teacher wants to tell my kids about various theories of where the world came from. To me, it's more important that they grow up with respect for other people, and that other peoples belief systems for the most part wont interfere with them. What Mrs CBag general arts degree has to say about the origins of life means shit-all to them in the long run.
I'd hate for them to be the kind of thoughtless shitbags I see posting here about how everyone but them is a "big stupid idiot" for not believing exactly what you're told to, especially when what I was told about evolution 20 years ago is different than now.
I'd hope they realize that at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter if the lady in the office next to me believes God made the universe 6000 years ago, or if some other guy thinks it just popped out of nothing 2.53 billion years ago - both "calculations" are based on a ridiculously small data sample, and both are completely worthless, and almost guaranteed to be wrong.
Personally I think the smug jackasses who wander around, so sure they know everything about the universe from a book jacket or two they read, make bigger fools of themselves than anyone else.
There are very few vocal ID supporters. There are legions of evolution jackasses wasting time preaching to the choir, and generally annoying everybody. Nobody cares what you think, and nobody is impressed with your stupid flying spaghetti monster joke thing. Dawkins really must believe he's the first person in history to question the existence of God. What a fucking douchebag, how would anyone idolize him?
What the fuck? You don't see any racist jokes in south park or simpsons? What is Apu? What is Token? What was chef?
I guess you don't get the idea of comedy bringing socially taboo topics into the limelight, and the very fact that a joke can be offensive and funny at the same time allows us to learn a little something about society.
It's attitudes like yours that divide us along racial lines. Shows like Chappelle's show, South Park and Family Guy bring us together by mockery of stereotypes, not by reinforcing them.
Yeah, you're so fucking wise and open minded. I wish I could cover my ears and shout lalalalalalaa.
Why would you be afraid (thats what wary means) to read the article, if your personal beliefs are so correct? Why would you care?
It doesn't bother me in the least that some eastern people believe in reincarnation, despite that I think the idea that you come back as a bumblebee or dandelion is silly. And if they came up with a viable equation to explain this effect, I wouldn't discount it based on a completely irrelevant discussion.

It is not open, it is not accountable, it's just a 3rd rate web-enabled tabloid.
They do exactly that, they don't deliberatly get streets wrong, but they may add a few extra house numbers that don't exist, they may add a cul-de-sac that doesn't exist.
Phone companies insert bogus numbers into their directories to detect copies, and dictionaries and encyclopedias regularly add bogus entries.
This, however, isn't why Jims tom-tom doesn't guide him to within 6 inches of his front door. Truth is, Jim lives in bumblefuck nowhere, and as is common with the human condition, considers himself the most important person alive, and cannot believe that thousands of reps with sophisticated triangulation equipment haven't showed up to fix the error.
I mean, they must get hundreds of thousands of complaints from people who can't find Jim's house. I'm sure its a fucking icon.
Jim, of course, is an imaginary amalgamation of every fuckbag who posts on the internet.
If the US was a democracy we'd still have the institution of slavery, women would not vote, and children would still be property under the law.
Luckily, it is not. It is a federal constitutional republic. It is a system where emancipation, suffrage and child labor and welfare laws can be jammed down the majorities throat, for the betterment of the country as a whole.
Likewise, if Afghanistan or Iraq were a democracy, they'd simply return to taliban/warlord control, as nobody would dare vote against them.
Voters can be bought, coerced, and easily confused into following the charismatic, but evil candidate. But we have the electoral college to make sure that despite the wishes of the majority of morons, they can choose what is best for the country. This is why Hitler could never have been an American president - no matter how popular his policy of "kill all jews browns and blacks" would be.
But, you know, lets all hate America and mouth off blah blah blah and not really understand why the constitution is structured the way it is.
It's there when the jury, despite irrefutable evidence of innocence, decides to come in with a guilty plea, because the defendant happens to be the wrong color/sex/religion/whathaveyou. Or, when they're basically bamboozled by a slick-talking lawyer. Basically, the Judge is tasked with making sure the jury does its job properly, and if they don't, he can toss their verdict.
This, and the Judges discretion during sentencing, are very, very crucially important checks and balances in our justice system.
Mandatory sentences, three-strike laws, and other such populist "think of the children" bullcrap removes those checks and balances, so now you have people going to jail for 25 years for jaywalking, and maybe we can even return to the era of all-white juries sentencing every nigger that comes in front of them.

Due diligence w.r.t safety seems prudent to me, this lawsuit seeks to make that process transparent to the rest of us.
Haven't you been paying attention to Kyoto, etc?
It only causes global warming when the its released into the atmosphere from US soil, or the release is caused by an American.
Everyone else gets a free pass, and less advanced nations should be entitled to free US dollars to help them release CO2 at current american levels..
No, you explain to me why I don't have that right.

Americans really need to realize that their concept of secondary education is nothing more than football teams with daycare centers bolted to them.
Outside of the US, the schools are pretty much viewed as a joke. Even the supposedly prestigious "ivy league" schools.
Just saying.

I agree, and I dispute the assertion that the 1 in 5 number is wrong. I see absolutely no links to any alternative statistics.

Where's Adobe's open support for a F/OSS version of Flash, you know, the shit-tastic technology that this is replacing?
Where were the other bidders? Did google bid? Did Cory Doctorow bid? I didn't think so.
