The bad data started flowing in, the code got really strong really fast, and really quickly I had added a couple hundred unit tests to the automated build. And I got bawled out for it, since "number of unit tests written" was apparently the metric management had decided to use to see how good the coders are, and since I was suddenly producing an order of magnitude more than others, I was "cheating". It wasn't like the tests were just trivial permutations of data, every one of these things was an edge case that was borking the code. By comparison, most of the handwritten unit tests I was seeing were really just useless dickstroking permutations of Assert.IsTrue(awesome == me);
The fact that they could finally ship the product with this particular feature working and tested was lost on them.
