I collect CDs too, but do think that portable media type is the future. A simple instance where your CDs may prove to be too archaic would be when you would want to carry them around during travel and at the same time share it with folks staying back at home. Audio tapes replaced records for the same reason.

We have already reached a threshold where such technology can match CD quality but it hasnt really taken off as a distribution medium (over the internet) thanks to a few people who think MP3s = PIRACY and few others who would love to see you shell out extra cash for another CD.

All of the latest games ? Sorry, that can come only with some solid corporate backing . If we had that, linux would be a OS at #2 that could actually kick windows at #1.

Currently that corporate backing simply doesnt exist and i have always wondered why. Apple has a quick time player for windows, why doesnt it have one for linux ? Adobe PDFs - why doesnt it have a reader for linux ? Macromedia only recently release a buggy flash player (still in beta) for linux that cant run most of the stuff i could find online.

I dont know the answers to why these corporations wouldnt want to encourage development of smallest of linux apps. But this I believe is one of the big reasons linux is a greater success when it comes to governments adopting it rather than average Joe blow.

i disagree. When you have the occupants sitting inside the car its easier for both of you to adjust your conversation level depending on how tight the traffic is or how much of attention level is required. It would be difficult to expect the person on the other end of the phone to have similar understanding.

Besides that the difference between using a headset and talking to someone beside you is same as that between listening to your favourite song using a headphone and listening to it on a stereo. Which of the two do you think has a easier chance of having you preoccupied ?

The goals of IT admins going around trouble shooting application related problems cannot be narrowed down to distinct goals that telephone systems might have i.e:

Firstly, How can online activity ever be an active indicator of economic trends? Not everything done online is replicated at large in market in the real world. For example - I read news online, but dont buy any newspaper. I have browsed through catalogs of material online in amazon but havent bought much from them compared to what I would spend on totally different items in retail stores. The same applies for travel too.

Secondly, even if they do manage to get the software that tracks information on to peoples machine. How is this very different from online votes which almost always go with a disclaimer saying "The results represent only those who have been online on the site and is not scientifically valid" ?

They seem to have tons of predictions already . Is it just me or does someone else see their common trend of predicting that online business is THE IN thing.

The whole article seems to be NOT about throwing away credit for discovery to these authors, but about the possibility "of discovery not being discovery itself" but a mere realization of something already existing - a very interesting thought. A quote for you from the article:

"as Mr. Siegfried defines them, are not human inventions awaiting technological realization, but rather insights into the nature of reality."

Think about this , when we go to the movies and we know that the movie is going to have aliens & a futuristic theme - why do we go in expecting aliens to look in a particular way (egg shaped heads with long oval eyes) ? flying saucers to be circular ? architecture to be composed of tall towers ? If you think that it is because of the way they have been habitually potrayed in the movies, my question is

"How has there been so much uniformity in such thoughts/imaginations about the future among those who have pictured it that way ?"
