I've got a whole load of burned CD's that I created up to about 5 years ago.. and on varying quality of media, and a lot of them aren't any problem.
I suppose storage is the key thing, keep them in a dark cool place will help them last just that bit longer (unless you have a case of those little bugs that like eating the data layer).
Although they are of a similar tech, what about DVD recordable disks? I've got plenty of those now... but if I keep doing what i've been doing over the years and backup my backups onto newer media then I'm not too worried.
...how much does this weigh? Would it fall through my wooden desk... the only guide I have to heatsink cases is the Mac Cube, which was a rather nice doorstop in the weight area.
At the risk of sounding silly, how do you manage to make your backup copies? Can you do a direct rip to a single DVD-R disk?
The reason for my question is that DVD-R disks can take about 4.35GB (although I don't try and overburn my DVD's), but most DVD film data I've come across takes up around 6GB average (not including the extras and menus)... so do you span the unencrypted VOBs across multiple DVD-R's, or just re-encode the film to make it fit onto the disk?
I haven't gone so far as flashing my drive with an unofficial firmware, I find DVD-Decryptor does an excellent job (it is also bundled with Gordian Knot).
Hopefully their website if/. can hammer it enough... that'll teach them to not help us Linux people out, or maybe we'll just have to take our business to nVidia (but then again 'doing' and 'saying' can be two completely different ballgames).
By the way I have a Radeon 9500 Pro on an XP box, and the Catylist drivers still suck... I have to throttle down the hardware acceleration functions to stop XP going screwy (well, more screwy than usual).
Your last word is what I thought when I clicked the link and got the anti-leech image, urgh! It ought to be added to the 'goatxxxx' related list (of images you shouldn't have to see).
Although I don't have a link, there was a Daily Mail (UK bigoted middle class rag) cartoon that had a Dalek hell bent on world domination to be confronted with stairs. Unfortunately the first time I saw the Daleks in an episode, it hovered up some stairs - so the joke was lost on me for a while.
I wouldn't mind getting the Dyson DC-06, apart from the worry that my dogs would want to rip it to shreds.
I remember when Björk released her second album "Post", she had an opening sample of the song "Possibly Maybe"... turns out she'd nicked it from an artist called "Scanner". I'm not sure if they sent out the legal hounds, but the album still hadn't been pressed in certain countries so the sample was removed (I'm listening to the said track on the UK album, and it has the sample).
This is long ago, so my memory is a bit hazy on the details.
I signed my parents Pub up on this list and the Fax Preference System (and the Mail P S), and within two months the amount of sales calls and reams of wasted fax paper went down to zero... a customer of ours was lamenting to us about the same problems with his phone and fax line, and he wouldn't believe us that it worked (one month later though he was most impressed).
Ever since signing up to this opt out scheme, we've only ever had ONE sales phone call, and fortunately I was there to 'casually' inform them that if we were not removed from their (and any company shared) contact list, that they were liable for a very big fine, and that they were in violation of the opt-out list to which they are meant to adhere to and risked criminal prosecution for violation of (not sure if it was true, but it added significant weight to our argument)... it's a call that left me feeling very empowered for a change!
TPS Online - with links to the sister sites for FaxPS, MailPS and even e-mailPS... although I never bothered with the latter, considering the amount of e-mail sources that is way out of their control.
I remember returning to University after my intern/placement year and as a leaving present from work I got Deus Ex (I'd been playing the Demo for ages so my friends knew what to get).
The first time I noticed a game had really affected my was when I was shopping in Leicester city centre walking down the high street, to realise I was glancing up at the roofs of every nearby building for snipers... I was in a strange "this is too weird" daze for quite a while and being slightly more aware of everyone around me.
I also agree about the 9/11 similarities, but I try and have a more hopeful idea of the future in spite of being spoon fed stories/ideas/predictions about our demise in the coming decades or century... although that notion will go out the window when Deus Ex 2 comes out and I'm completely immersed in that world again.
Well there is plenty of radiation going around from mobile phone masts, which are either being built next to schools or hidden in the price towers of petrol stations. There was a local news report about a village where they've had a mobile phone mast for the past 10 years and the amount of cancer cases has gone up significantly... one woman who has had major problems takes the news team through her house with a radiation detector and the thing buzzes away even more when she goes upstairs! I can't find a link on the web but here is a start
Back to the mobile power, it always makes me think of SimCity 2000 with the Microwave powerplants and the warning of a misdirected beam hitting your city instead of the plant.
Or you could take a different approach, well with the fire connection (Phoenix, Firebird) they could literally 'brand' you, a nice permanent advertisment somewhere on your body.
Time to stoke up the fire people, a red hot Mozilla branding session is needed:-)
Well after the english singer Robbie Williams claimed that piracy was 'great', and his record company (EMI) went ballistic.... it is quite an interesting change of tact from them.
Either that or they realised that expanding their online availability might be due to the new report that online downloads of songs will impact on the national pop charts?
The words "Security through Obscurity" came to mind when I read your comment... but with scientific discoveries wouldn't it be "Security through Ignorance, until we discover it.
Probably my more pro-Linux sentiment there;-) but the particular plane I was on was only 2 weeks old, and you know what they say about the new vs. older but well oiled... although with that it did make me a little more worried about the plane crashing rather than the media centres!
I suppose I should have re-worked that little comment, but I suppose it boils down to who Virgin contracted to do the IT systems. I prefer their use of Linux in the sense that they have more leeway to iron out these initial teething troubles quicker and easier than if they went with a Windows platform. Added to that it was only our compartment who were having the problems (the rest of the plane was fine) so it must have been our particular server having the constant reboots.
In Space No One Can Hear You Smeg.
Although I still have the image of the smashed space sign that says 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' in my mind.

Just my $0.02

How long before a font set will come out with the fighter characters? That would be quite nice!
I just wanna know, what gives?

future synergy between viruses and spam
Sounds like something out of Dilbert... time load up the Bullfighter.
A Blog With Unlimited Bandwidth
Wouldn't that be called the Aquinas Protocol? ;-)
...I'd say they we're mightily "issed off".

Ahh, protein bars that are used for 'intelligent' purposes, instead of 'muscle heads' ;-)
And for those of you who think I'm slagging off people who go to the gym, I'm joking (plus I'm a gym regular myself).

It does not make sense. THAT does not make sense.

Just my 0.02 downloaded songs (or cents/pence).
How about the U-Bend? :)
"sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads"
or..
Just add the sharks!
nuclear hand grenade
Why does this make me think of Starship Troopers? (then a loud voice shouts "MEDIC!")
Well I suppose it's not really restricted to phone systems (me stating the obvious here).... all I have to say is:
login: cisco
password: cisco
And then you can add 'stupid admins/BOFHs' to the list.
