I am in the process of reviewing some of their hardware. Their laptops, desktops, and servers all come pre-installed with Ubuntu 9.04. Go to www.system76.com and check them out!
and have yet to see a sale. this is sad considering you can buy the book for under 5.00. i thought the whole kindle publishing metaphor could easily create a new path to publication for writers who can't get published because the economy is keeping the standard path to publishing open to new (and not-so-new) writers.
the problem is that amazon doesn't do much for PR for new writers for the kindle. they could easily market new writers and have an entirely new revenue stream based on writers you can not read anywhere else (at least until they are established).
anyway - if you're curious - the book is called Shero. it's a super hero book.
make better music! today's bands and artists suck! if the recording industry wants me to give it my money it's going to need to stop focusing solely on R&B, hip hop, rap, and country. they lose a good amount of their user base - you know, the one's weened on rock, when they narrow their focus.
I work at a salon (as hairstylist and sole IT person) and just implemented Nolapro. it's a pretty darned good solution that works with Linux. it's not open source but it's still free (as in cost) and is, so far, an outstanding solution.
just announced today that starbucks here in KY is closing some of their shops. they are closing 100 stores across the country because they opened too many of them (and the economy stinks).
it's not like the Bush administration ever let a thing like civil liberties get in the way of doing anything. this is merely another instance of him ignoring the constitution and walking all over our rights.
this is sad. an unfair advantage? come on. let the guy run. i'm sure their are disadvantages as well. but the advantages to the human spirit this would bring are countless.
my step daughter is 13. my wife and i decided she should be able to have a myspace page so we could know about it and monitor it. she had told us that a lot of her friends have them that their parents do not know about and they say and do all sorts of things their parents wouldn't approve of.
well my wife's ex finds out about it and reports his own daughter so they'll shut her page down. so much for parenting.
we thought it would be smart to allow it and KNOW about it so we could actually participate and make sure she was safe.
so you might want to think twice about telling your child "no". that child will probably do it anyway. and if you think blocking it on their computer at home will work - they can always go to a friends house.
i would create an income floor and ceiling. i would find the ideal numbers apply them so that no job would pay less than X and no job would pay more than Y. then allow companies to give incentives via vacations and such. say, for example, no job would pay less than $50,000 and no job would pay more than $100,000. and anyone that would dare say "i can't live on less than $100,000" should be ashamed of themselves.
call it socialism, call it what you want - but it would go further to fix the economy than anything anyone else is offering up.
although the ipod does work on linux, the iphone doesn't. when you have two killer pieces of hardware - of course you're going to see a larger growth in the market. and Apple can attribute its' growth on hardware - not software.
if Linux could support the iphone - it would see more growth than it has seen.
i bought an iphone and had to, much to my chagrin, load up a machine with XP (because I didn't have a recent enough copy of OS X.) if Apple would open up the iphone so Linux could support it, I would simply use Linux.
remember when MTV actually played music videos? don't they think that MIGHT have helped with the sale of music? and maybe the fact they now only play inane reality tv shows might have SOMETHING to do with the fact that music sales have dropped?
Lately I've been forced to listen to the radio at a lot. Between NPR, user-supported radio, and the standard fare, I have come to the conclusion that the downfall of the music industry can be blamed on one beast - radio. Why is that you ask?
Think about it. You listen to FM radio all day and what do you hear? The same 10 songs (depending upon genre and station) over and over. So anyone wanting to hear new music (or even older music they have never heard) is out of luck. So what happens is people like me who gave up on the radio years ago quit buying music. We just listen to the same old stuff over and over again. We really have little idea that there might be something new and wonderful out there because the radio stations won't let us here it.
Oh sure there might be stations in larger cities, or on XM radio...but barring that you are sequestered to the same ol' mix of the same ol' songs day in and day out.
Oh and it doesn't help that there is hardly anything new and wonderful out there these days. The radio waves are filled with talentless hacks and CEO-created boy and girl bands, increasingly angry and ego-maniacal rap, depressing country...you get the idea.
So maybe the recording industry should stop trying to lay blame on music pirates because they are typically only pirating old music because it's the only thing worth a damn anymore. Instead they should point the finger of blame back at themselves. Why?
1) They bleed the musicians of all their profit. 2) They only produce what they think are "sure things" which are, ultimately not. In that process they side step possible, actual talent! 3) They create a situation where radio stations can only play what the music industry considers a "sure thing" thus filling the air waves with the same ol', played out music that we were tired of hearing a decade ago.
Maybe the whole idea behind the advent of radio stations should come back to haunt us - to play good music. To play music worthy of buying. But that's not going to happen because there is no profit in that.
And that's what it's all about you hokey pokey people.
i was a victim of throttling. i switched to blockbuster and haven't had that problem since. i have had other problems. like them dropping my account when they raised their rates. but over all i am much more satisfied with blockbuster online than i was with netflix.
considering firefly was one of (if not THE) best series to ever hit the networks...if the sci fi channel has anything to do with it, it'll last one season and then disappear. only to have a huge fan base, spin off an outstanding movie, and have the masses wondering "why?".
they are going to die a slow painful death. they have a chance to re-invent themselves by bringing the Linux-based OS out (as they've been promising). until then we palm users are all faced with using a very out-of-date OS (with sketchy blue tooth on treos i might add) and no hope for any much-needed updates.
in the meantime the iphone is looking to totally overtake that market (if they start working on bringing out third-party apps). if palm allows apple to start releasing third-party apps palm may as well throw in the towel.
i would like to keep using my palm-based treo. but i am getting so tired of the crashes and horrific blue tooth that it's getting to the point where i might just jump that shark and go the iphone route.
well - i will when a linux app like jpilot can sync with the iphone. if that never happens i'll wait for the open moko. if that doesn't happen i'll just scrap the pda and get a regular ol' phone.
I have not purchased an iPhone for one reason: Lack of Linux support. If Apple will open it up so that the jpilot team (or some other team) can get support locked in, i'll buy one. until then - no way.
here's a grand idea that people have been asking for for a long, long time:
port firefox to the treo and other smart phones. if apple was able to get "safari" on the iphone, surely the good folks at mozilla see the importance of a good browser on a phone. let's face it, the palm browsers STINK! and opera for the palm (treo) is buggy as all get out.
the music industry is dying because of one very good reason: it sucks. new bands are horrible and the old tried and true bands aren't putting out anything.
on top of it all - the RIAA has become nothing more than a bully.
it no longer renders on the Clie browser Netfront. that really sucks. maybe a little more testing should go into a web site created by, read by, and loved by those who's flag often flies for cross platform independence.
i was with netflix for 4 months. i was watching about 2-3 movies a week and sending them back quickly. after a while they were sending me 1-2 movies a week. i emailed them and they sent me a reply quoting their "change in policy toward" that rewarded their less frequent users.
i then subscribed to blockbuster and, although they don't have nearly the selection that netflix has, haven't had the same problem at all. in fact i also get one in-store coupon per week for a free movie rental.

how absolutely ignorant of you.
i'll have to find out if all of my gay friends hang out at slashdot.

he'll be the commencement speaker and play "We are the champions" AND he'll get paid royalties for it.
this is great. Queen was an amazing group. to think that Brian May had that in him as well? Very nice.

i've been waiting for a fix for the palm os bluetooth fix. guess this won't happen.
when i can get a smartphone that is based on linux, i'll switch.
