  1. Learn How To Prove Things! on Science and Math For Adults? · · Score: 4, Insightful

On the topic of calculus, don't learn anything past calculus I (well, bits of calculus II are useful). The rest is completely useless and you'll forget about it all in a couple of years anyway because of its uselessness. If you want something that's useful go for discrete math and/or the good bits of linear algebra. Your comment is completely offbase. Actually, Linear Algebra is about as important as Calculus in many scientific/engineering disciplines.

More importantly, you claim that anything more advanced will be forgotten, but the later courses often serve to reinforce earlier material. For example a course on Fourrier theory reinforces both Linear Algebra and Calculus.

Most math departments have a course somewhere after the introductory sequence which teaches basic proof techniques often by studying the definition of numerical systems from logical axioms.

These basic proof techniques are the very basis of mathematics. The reason so many people get through high school with little understanding of math is that they are never forced to do any proofs outside of Geometry.

In short, if you cannot prove anything, you know practically nothing about mathematics.

I do agree that this legislation has passed because of the coporate control of the politicians. However, it is the people's ignorance of the issues that has allowed these laws to pass. Of course much of that ignorance is due to corporate control of the media.

I do think that you should be a little careful in saying that both the laft and right are controlled by corporations. For instance, greenpiece and Tim McVey (the left and right respectively) are not controlled by corporations. I think you mean that all politicians are controlled by corporations.

  9. Lack of coverage on DMCA-Alikes Sweep Europe · · Score: 4, Interesting

One of the main reasons that the DMCA has caused so little controversy in mainstream American society (no, Slashdot is not mainstream) is that the conventional media has pretty much refused to cover it.

I'm just curious but have any Slashdot readers from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece, or Italy noticed any significant coverage in the media of these euro-DMCA laws? Also, what does the local reaction seem to be? Do most people know enough about the issues to care?

Well, I think that you're generally right about legal solutions not being appropriate. Uhaul shouldn't be able to have any say in what software people use or how it works...

On the other hand, there are a lot of problems with spyware for which legal solutions could be appropriate. For example, if a user does not agree to a spyware installation, but it is installed through some bug in activeX, the product that installs itself is really no better than say, someone who does a DOS attack (except that the DOS attack is against a corporation with wherewithal to pursue a legal solution).

For example, I was a victim of the Xupiter tool-bar attack. It was so incredibly annoying. It took quite a while to fix ... but Xupiter is still around and has had no reprecusions.

  24. Re:Garbage Science on 10th Anniversary Of Supreme Court's Daubert Ruling · · Score: 1

I think you are right. The primary problem with Daubert is that it let judges use decide what scientific evidence has merit based on their own discretion. Of course, very few judges are qualified to do that.

The previous standard, Frye, used the more conservative but better standard of admission of general acceptance in the scientific community.

Daubert might not have been so bad, but Joiner (which expanded on Daubert) exacerbated the problem by allowing Appellate courts to overturn the admissibility decision of a trial court only if the trial court abused its discretion. This is really obscene. An admissibility decision can't be overturned if it's horribly wrong, but only if it can be shown that the judge abused his discretion? That's horrible. It quite frankly admits abuse.

Thus if I as an attorney want to prevent my opponents from admitting a particular kind of evidence, all I have to do is get the case heard in a court with a prejudiced judge.

One of the reasons that our legal system works is the system of appeal which gives a certain continuity to the application of the law. Joiner completely screws that.
