    Oh really?

I think any ISP here in Finland would be more than happy to remove all the users using high bandwidth from their userbase. The more they use the connection they paid for, the more they cost to the ISP.

If goverment makes this possible, it will happen. I think they don't even have to ask ISPs to ban most active users.

While these codecs that are proposed are FREE, they are not widely supported.

Firstly, Nokia wants complete ecosystem, where content of the future is available on the web now.

We have YouTube. Do you really think they are going to convert their whole digital library to Ogg just because some company proposed it as their next standard. No. Nokia just wants to leverage the power W3C has to make it promote the file formats it already supports.

AAC is used in iTunes library. Nothing more is needed.

If these formats become accepted, devices can support the technology NOW, and be ready for the future, where more content is coming in these formats.

Secondly, I think Nokia has licensed all this stuff from Apple and other organizations, so they don't have to
    a) Buy new licenses
    b) Write new software
    c) Use any code that can cause potential licensing problems (GPL is a no-no, if you run a propietary solution)

The other options (some really old stuff, where patents have expired) , kinda succested this. Nobody is going to fill the web with stuff done with codecs older than themselves. MP3 being the only exceptio, but if I read correctly, that won't be available free until 2011.

It is just another goverment control mechanism under disguise of child porn filter. Now they show what it really is, and I am not even suprised.

I once had a great Korean device, called GP32. It was way ahead of it's time, and it had open source development enviroment and it was quite developer friendly with active community.

What happened? There was only 1 good commercial game, which I bought: Pinball dreams. There were talks about more, but some Korean company even failed to translate Ashtonia Story (or something like that) because they thought it would not sell. They did however translate it for PSP and it is getting top reviews everywhere and selling pretty good.

So, if you have limited audience, limited quantity gaming platform, how much interrest is that gonna generate from game developers? Next to nothing really.

Then we think about PSP and DS or even GBA. They have nearly unlimited supply of old games, that can be ported to them. PSP has been getting some PS1 titles, DS has atleast Mario 64 and Mario Cart and I am definately going to get FFVI for my GBA. They have .. thousands of games available.

Then let's thinka about gaming in Mac. I have old iBook , and I am not sure should I cry or laugh. There is Myst, Blizzard Games (thank you Blizzard, keep up the wonderful job) and some open source games. That is mostly it. The gaming market on Mac is very, very limited. Can you name some Mac exclusive games? Thought so. And the competitors, they can choose what to port today, and it will most likely sell.

It also seems to lack any 3d capability. Which sucks.

Their best bet would be IMHO to make FULL flash 9 compability and let users play flash games. That is the only way they have large base of games available. Any other option is a sure loss.

So .. do I buy them? Ofcourse I do. I even bought two Broken Sword games because they were supported by ScummVM. Then the problems kick in. The copy protection system for example for Zak McKracken hurts my eyes and Maniac Mansion - I don't have perfect stereo vision, so reading the copy protection system would require glasses, that I otherwise won't use. They removed the copy protections on their CD re-releases, and hunting those down from Ebay is a pain in the "#. Somebody always outbids, making it impossible to get them. If there is even a copy for sale. I am currently interrested in Zak256, but I haven't seen it go for reasonable price. And then the media. People who really played the games, know that they come on 3.5" (or 5.25") discs. Recently, my Zak McKracken disc 2 failed, and I noticed it while making a copy. My current computer doesn't even have floppy drive, and I think time will consume my precious collection. For NightShift, I managed to lose my 3.5" discs while moving to another city. Now I am stuck with 5.25" and I have nothing to read it with. Futhermore, my copy protection stuff is getting old too. My Star Control 2 starmap is breaking apart, and I have resorted to black and white copy to preserve the original. Luckily LucasArts re-released Monkey Island so I got rid of that spin wheel. Anyway, because game companies force us to hunt down some really rare CD-releases, bother us with silly copy protection schemes and don't update releases of old games, I am supporting rom sites and cracked copies. And trust me, games I play, I usually have original right there on the shelf. And you never left your PS1 roms on top of your PS1 without cover? Well my brother did. Now my FFVII is all scratched.
