I love gentoo, in fact I am writing this from my AmmoBox, which runs gentoo... anyway, I've started installing MEPIS on other machines that can't be tied down with days of compile time (work, my laptop). (I must admit to compiling my own kernels though... I have to "rice" out my Linux a little bit)
I must say that I am really impressed by its ability to work cleanly and easily, and by Debian's apt system. I am not giving up my gentoo, its great for my "hobby/projects/server" computer, but on the computers that I use more as a tool than a project, MEPIS is the way to go. It is also great for evangelizing people to Linux. I've converted girls, even humanities majors to Linux via MEPIS...
Anyone who wants to learn a lot about Linux and get in to the meat of the OS should install gentoo at least once though.
Actually, when I was a kid, I got in the elevator in the Pantages Theatre in Tacoma, and pressed the up button, and... the doors closed, and the elevator did nothing. A crowd gathered around the outside during the half hour I was trapped in there, and people tried in vain to open the doors. People were blaming it on "some kid in there who was messing with the elevator"... well, it turns out that a computer controlling the elevator crashed. Fucking computers....`
You are correct about pathogens and immunity, however allergies are quite different than pathogens. The immune system fights pathogens, however the immune system is what causes allergies. They are an overreaction to foreign sustances entering the body.
Growing up around allergens often causes allergies. The body, having been genetically predisposed to certain allergies will cause the immune system to attack allergens that it comes into contact with.
Allergies are caused by the immune system, rather than prevented by it. Thus, it is better for children not to be exposed to possible allergens until later in childhood.

I know what you are saying about Linux being a joke on the desktop. I've switched from nasty RPM based distros to gentoo to Mepis Linux. Mepis is a debian variant, and it JUST WORKS!
I really enjoy the simplicty and freedom (yes, as in beer) of Mepis. Anyway, I would recommend it to anyone. Even my 13 year old sister runs it. Even one of my college friends who is a humanities major has no problem with it. Just my $0.02
Linux Distributions incorporate many packages and utilities, Windows is only an operating system, with a minimal amount of anything included with it. And seriously doubt our mircrosoftie included any patches for WMP, and MSIE, which come with the OS, but are riddled with holes
yeah, sorry all the people on here a bunch of irritable slobs who cant take a joke. I saw this article right as it appeared, and though oh! Great chance to karma whore and get a +5 funny by saying what you said. Then I found that you said it.:( Oh, well, thanks for taking that Score: 0, Troll for me. I guess +5 this was not destined to be.
He is referring to the doodles that Bill Gates left behind and were analized. The doodle's were mistakenly though to be tony blair's handwriting. Gates misspelled Port Alegre as Port Allegro. Slashdot ran an article about it this morning. But I guess you guys dont RTFA.
I think you mean to say, "A true geek would only use Linux". There is a difference in the logic there, as you are saying that all linux users are true geeks, and you meant to say that all true geeks use linux.
If they were planning on a dive, it is likely they were in the south (hardest hit area). I am currently in Bangkok, finishing a 2 week long trip. I didnt even feel the quake!
Kind of ironic how I always screw off in OS Design class on my laptop reading slashdot and electoral-vote.com. Taunenbaum wrote the text book for that class.
Yes I know that is more coincidence than irony, but it is kind of funny... ok maybe not
In the article, it is mentioned that lightning can travel 60 miles from storm and strike somewhere with "clear blue sky." They also cite this as being responsible for many of the lighning deaths in Colorado.

Man, you must work for Nasa, mixing your metric and imperial systems like that. That is what makes billion dollar space probes die!

Hey! My dad is an evergreen state graduate... I'm going to tell my daddy you're making fun of him.

Ya, its funny how college has that effect on you. You learn to do calculus, but forget things like how to subtract or divide.
Um... are you sure its a good idea to publish a pic with the license plate number of a car carrying $750 000 worth of stuffZors?

They should add an applet that lets you control the camera on the space craft! Just think of the media exposure NASA would get!

I used to use Paint Shop Pro (PSP) and liked it a lot. I use GIMP now, as I'm only in Linux. But it is an App I do miss.

I guess you cant say that it's safe to look at porn anymore!
No he isn't, some of us can see through the bullshit, hopefully it will be enough to vote his ass out of office.
There are many Americans that do not support the current administration.
Behind one these curtains is a weird, probably psychotic dictator with weapons of mass destruction? Can you guess which one?
A: Behind our curtain!
