not necessarily true. there are still movies that don't take place in a real world that don't have inapropriate product placement, like lord of the rings, and serenity (fruity oaty bars not-withstanding). I don't see why allowing *apropriate* product placement will ruin creative worlds.

they recently stopped providing game informer for free. as such, the discount card now only costs $5 for a year, which, since I didn't care about some lame-o magazine, seems, to me, to be a lot better deal. a $5 card for a 10% discount on used games is an impulse buy: its the change after breaking a $50-spot on a used game. a $10 one with a subscription to a crappy magazine, not so much.

whats so wrong with letting her do something that gives her pleasure? why do you feel the need to meddle in other people's leisure-time hobbies? are you jealous that she spends more time with nethack than she does you? I think that you need to ask yourself these questions first.

  6. Uwe boll needs to stop making game movies... on BloodRayne Hits Theatres · · Score: 1

Uwe Boll needs to stop making game movies, but that said: he *has* made a movie I enjoyed.
I was bored one weekend, watching cable, and too lazy to change the channel, and some little thriller came on called "black woods"... well, I watched it, and ended up enjoying it, as the twist was a very interesting one, and I was shocked when it turned out to have uwe boll's name on it at the end.

spoiler, not that any of you will care enough to actually see it. it was about a guy who was taking a trip to the country for the weekend, and gets kidnapped and subsequently tortured by a bunch of hillbillies. However, it turns out the country-folk tormenting the guy were in his own imagination. they had lived there at one time, but he'd killed their daughter in a drunken traffic accident (after which they'd moved away to get away from their own grief of loss, or something), and thanks to having rich parents, he got off free of consequences. the hilbillies tormenting him were just a psychological manifestation of his guilt and desire to be punished for his carelessness. end spoiler
and, then the credits rolled and I saw uwe boll's name. SHOCK! he'd made something, that, while not exactly cutting edge cinema, wasn't that bad! so obviously, he has an enjoyable movie in him..... he just needs to stop making game movies. I'm more inclined to blame game movies as being god-awful and un-doable now, as opposed to blaming Uwe. admittedly, there have been a couple good game movies, and there are certainly a few other games that *could* turn out to be great flicks if the movie script followed the one in the game as closely as possible: "max payne" I'm looking at you: where was the movie we were promised in the manual?!...) but as a whole, if you want to watch a game for an afternoon, go rent it for your playstation, do NOT see it in a theater.

geez, why not include a spoiler warning there for the folks who haven't seen the movie yet? that said, i'm commenting on it, too, and there may be a few spoilers.

that said, in firefly (and serenity) people *do* get hurt. they *do* get shot and live. they *do* get brutally beaten and mauled and hurt (look at Mal's eye after the fight with the ruptured blood vessels.. just look at his face: it looks like they smeared raw hamburger on it!) remember how the operative tries do to that 'nerve jab' move that makes people fall on his sword, and it doesn't work on Mal, because he lost that nerve cluster in the war? they do have a doctor on the ship, and he isn't just kaylee's love interest: he actually has to patch people up in many episodes of the show, and several times in the movie..

that said, sure, you could blow your characters' legs off, but thats an expensive special effect, especially if you're not getting rid of the character and plan on continuing to use them. also, how much fun can you have if you're crippled? no offense to real-life disabled people, but if you're missing an arm, you're not likely going to go around getting into grapping fistfights. if you have only one leg, you can't run away as quickly and the reavers will eat ya. if your fingers get snapped off, you won't be shooting that gun at the bad guys. so yes, in many fictions, if you are disabled, you're dead, because its going to drastically limit the kind of action you can participate in, and I've yet to see an episode of firefly, or any action drama, where they resolve their issues with the evildoers by sitting down and discussing their feelings.

it is, as you said, a dangerous world.

i'm sorry thats not good enough for someone who plays the game with two fingers. question: can he use his feet? (I just glanced at the article) I used to know a girl who had no arms.. she did everything with her feet, and even played neverwinter nights and other games of the sort, using a keyboard and an optical mouse... which were set on the floor under the desk. it was impressive because she was frighteningly good at the games she played... no, its not fair. its a damn shame that you only have two fingers. don't blame faulty game design for a game made unplayable by your own handicap. also, from what i've heard, (i'm not an MMO fan) it sucks for *everyone*, not just those who have two fingers.

the cost of a launch console isn't the price on the box. you have to have a game to use with it.... expect to spend at least $500 (in the states at least) before you have an xbox 360 that you can actually do anything with.

its so good because its a fancy sword made of light!

but, going a step further and a tad geekier, consider that the blade itself, which can cut through anything except the beam of another saber, is incredibly light-weight. since light itself has no mass, the only weight of the thing is in the handle, so its incredibly easy to do quick shifts of position. add that to the jedi's ability to sense the world in a unique way, and not only is it a sword, its also a shield against incoming projectile attacks.

compare that to the longsword of comparable size (when the saber is extended, anyway) that I bought at the renaissance festival, which weighs (probably) 20 pounds, which i can (awkwardly) lift with one hand but couldn't likely swing with any accuracy or force, and you'll understand why people like the concept of lightsabers so much. :-p
