I don't see a point in starting with an 'easy' distro. It'll just get you in trouble when you need to do something under the hood.

First, if you haven't used Linux (properly, more than a few hours), I suggest you download either Knoppix or the Gentoo LiveCD and play around with it, get used to the CLI (and you can load a GUI as well.) You should get one of these anyway, preferrably in two copies, in case something goes wrong at any time.

For a permanent installation I second Gentoo -it's simple enough to get started with the manual and Portage (the software package manager) is better than any of the alternatives.

If Linux isn't really what you want, go with FreeBSD.

  9. Flamebait here. on Drug Addiction Integrated Into Achaea MUD · · Score: 5, Interesting

The drift of the story -undoubtedly submitted by one of the industrious Achaea PR folks- seems to be that Achaea invented the drug addiction code. This is incorrect -there have been many instances of similar implementations in the past.

I am, frankly, sick and tired of reading advertisements for Achaea on /. shallowly disguised as news or articles -there are many as good and even more better MUDs out there (not that Achaea is particularly bad), with better code, better storylines, better administration and better players. 'd rather read about MUDs in general rather than these moronic innuendos.

Achaea uses the same questionable advertising style on many forums. It is one of the few apparently commercially successful text-based game companies of the time, but this is entirely unnecessary.

So, assuming n items in the list, the bubble sort needs to go through the list n times, each time going through the list (in a nested loop) n times. Giving you a speed of n*n, or n^2. Anyway, a merge sort is O(n*log(n)), but it requires 2n memory, whereas a bubble sort is done in n memory. So, which would be better for your application?

This is how you conceive the sorts to operate. You understand them in math. I understand them in a more -I don't want to say visual- conceptual fashion. There are many ways to program and not all of them involve thinking in mathematical terms -yes, one needs to understand the implications of the mathematics, but I've found that this can be done without even considering the process as mathematics. I'm not a great programmer but I'm by no means a bad one, either.

It's astounding how often people relate marxism (or communism) with dictatorship. Marxism is not exactly a form of government, in the same way capitalism isn't, but both are tied tightly to and provide parts of the governing process. A working marxist model /requires/ democracy in order to function. This of course also means that marxism cannot be forced on a people, because this is likely to cause abuse of the system. Yes, a credit card is the absolute best (a debit card will do, too), as long as you have a valid reason to state the product is not what you expected (so take screen captures of their guarantees and save any e-mails, you can attach these to the affidavit the bank/cc company will be requesting from you.) This is because the merchant can be tracked down by their Visa/Mastercard merchant id. The difference between debit and credit is that credit cards have to give you the provisional (temporary) credit for the amount up front, and debit cards can take up to 10 business days (because govt. regulation E, electronic funds transfers.) The entire chargeback process can take up to 90 days in either case, so if you incur any fees, it'll be a while before those are reversed.

As an aside: if possible, choose Mastercard as your *debit* card (credit card doesn't make a difference) -Visa will allow purchases to be made even when you don't have money on your account (up to $30-$50) and your bank will charge you OD fees.

If all/most of the necessary logic is in the DB already, that's another thing to think about (you can also of course just rip off the code there:)
