They were. I was at Planet Mirror for a while. We HAD 2TB of downloads and 2 million people a day. BitTorrent was one of the reasons for its closure. File mirroring is/was a very competitive business (for advertising eyeballs) and bittorrent certainly was a nail to the coffin.
because any doofus with a mobile phone and a USB can be James Bond. They can pull off all that whacky seconds-to-the-millenium bank hack attacks and steal billions. Not enough sharks with lasers I suspect.
I've had a few friends who have been cops, and while being nice guys and girls they can be universally described as totally ignorant to the point of actual stupidity. It always stunned me at how profoundly they misunderstood the simplest things. They could not and would not contextualise anything.
Eveything was either breaking the law (however they chose to define it) or potentially breaking the law.
Needless to say, I have dumped all 5 of them knowing they would end up in trouble, psychotic or corrupt. I was 100% right on every one of them.
Note that just because you can transfer the box to someone after step 1 does not mean that the transferee will be able to accept the license. For example, if you buy the student version of a program and sell the box to a non-student, that non-student will be legally precluded from accepting the terms of the license agreement, assuming the license specifies that it is only to be used by students.
and what would happen if it said it may only be used by albino dwarves of Irish decent? or only white people may use it?
I hate all this software licensing shit. Its so intensely artificial. Only a lawyer or MBA could come up with this mind contorting argument!
so, a myth is a myth, and recursion is recursion and therefore all recursions are myths and myths are recursive. Hmmm, my spidey sense of an infinite loop forming is tingling!
If you are a complete n00b and know nothing of the history of modern computing, then nothing. If you can remember back to 1990, like I can and lived through and was intimately involved in MS at the OS level, then you'd understand. Mold, granted as a disambiguation, but my original meaning stands. Be friendly.
China is morally and politically the enemies of the west. Chinese government thinking is incompatible with any western government.
Ignoring IP (like most/.ers do) is one thing, but to sanction it with government inaction, or action, or tacit acknowledgement is another. Trade laws, IP, currency manipulation, trade embargoes (gold, rare earths, cement, iron and steel) are showing that the Chinese Government are not Happy Trade Friends, not even handed consumers of western product.
If people THINK that China is their economic saviour, they are deluded. As per above, their interests are not "our" interests.
Has everyone forgotten they are a totalitarian communist regime?
Does anyone, for one second, think the $895 Billion in Bonds the CG holds is going to anything other than a dick in the bum? (http://www.ustreas.gov/tic/mfh.txt)
I agree. The last 6 projects I've had the misfortune to take over were like this... unwieldy, evilly complex and error stuffed. What should have been simple was insanely complex. It took 4 to 6 weeks just to get anyone working on anything. I could have coded it in flat PHP in 2 days. Frameworks are the death of projects and its one of the reasons I no longer love programming.
amen brother. I've been a CTO 4 times now, and I have completely tossed in the towel. Doing a gig with my wife selling kids clothes on the 'tubes.... I used my brainz to do all the internal IT BS, but that was easy... now Im having REAL FUN. Hours are good.
I had someone ask me if they should pursue a career in IT, and I told them to AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS. Im certain some jobs can be fun, but in the majority you are abused, blamed for everything, underresourced, surrounded by people who have no idea and BS hours and late night call outs... PLUS micro managed budgets where you need to justify every blank DVD purchase....

The longer this goes on I think it will be Nazis.

So, who can I fire my low orbit ion cannon at?
Hey, I'm a Windows Zombie and I feel you are discriminating against me. Is this because of braaaiiinnnssss?
Hey! What's wrong with SUV dwarves? They are great people, only their choice of vehicle is inappropriate.
Did you escape yours recently?

...and this is the perverse kind of anti-logic that causes people to want to see all lawyers at the bottom of the sea.
When the revolution comes I'll have my chains ready for them, legal or not.
No longer can an ordinary person make a rational and reasonable decision without some fucking lawyer trying to bone you.
given the "issues" Z-man has, one may wonder how many of these skeletons are in his closet? A bent sapling never grows straight.

at no point have they ever said "Don't be Evil". Heck, they came out of the same mould as M$, so one must argue they are evil by induction.

Ahem!
I agree with your sentiments.

Thats a very cromulent explanation. Enbiggening for its own sake is endumening.
A plane gun that uses throwing knives? Cool.
I recon one that shoots spiders, say, Tarantulas, would be far cooler. Spider cannon!
