  1. Re:Big news for Symbian developers! on Symbian Introduces Open Source Release Plan · · Score: 5, Interesting

The Download application has been around for years, and it's been redefining the word suck for years. If you enjoy waiting 10 minutes to see the same 10 applications displayed every day, the Download! application is for you. To even mention it in the same breath as Apple's App Store is delusional. And as a Symbian coder, I'll agree with the parents above... the platform sucks to code for. It's a totally non-standard (no exceptions, what?) platform that makes you account for design decisions/tradeoffs which were made over 10 years ago and should be a non-issue today. When they did the big binary break and added Symbian Signed they could have addressed a lot of this, but they chose not to. And don't get me started on Symbian Signed. Pay to have your app tested, pay to have it signed. Pay more to have your app tested if you start going deeper into the phone. Pay to have your app re-tested if you fail the test for somewhat arbitrary reasons (just check on Forum nokia to see some test rejection horror stories). Pay Nokia for the privilege of helping to grow their platform. Is it any wonder that while the total smartphone marketplace has been growing, Symbian marketshare has shrunk for 2 years running?

It's not that people (yourself notwithstanding) don't know about this, either - I can't watch 5 minutes worth of TV without seeing an ad for V-Cast. The big thing going right now is the "part mp3-player, part phone" Chocolate ads.

The problem is that this doesn't work. You might find the idea of downloading music through the air on the fly compelling until you actually try it. What if you already own a CD and decide one day you want to listen to a particular song from it?

My phone has a gig of memory on it... and I can swap cards in and out.. something I can't do with an iPod. Now, mind you, you're right... if I own a CD and want to listen to a particular song I can't rip it and put it on the phone on the spot... I have to use a PC, which I strongly suspect I have to do with an ipod.

As for horrible WAP interfaces... that's over. Take a look at a nice native S60 or J2ME application.

As for the VCast music store... it's verizon. They're charging an arm and a leg, and the store itself isn't very compelling.

But your blantant fanboyism towards apple is amusing. Face it... the iPod is very, very limited in what it can do. The network and OTA downloads are the next big thing.

Actually, Apple's probably already too late.

If Nokia gets this off the ground, and does it right, it could be the end for Apple. And the two letter reason as to why, the PC.

If Nokia, who last I checked happens to sell a lot of phones, puts their music store/player software on a phone, and takes advantage of EDGE/UTMS networks to let people download music on the fly... hell, that's a lot more compelling than running home, buying something from the PC, syncing it over to the ipod, and then running off.

Not to mention the fact that I can, today, listen to podcasts over my phone. Without having to touch a PC. I just plug in my headphones, load up my podcasting app, and start listening. Last I checked, I can't do that with an iPod, unless I download them first.

Apple needs to get a cellular gameplan before it's really too late.

Apple dropped the Newton. And I owned a Newton (MP 130). I loved my Newton. And it's dead. Gone. It was a bitch to network when it was alive and viable. It'd take so much work just to get it back up and able to work in today's networked environment, it's just not worth it. Where's the good email client? Where's the web browser (Newt's Cape isn't going to cut it, as good as it is)? And for god's sake, where's the J2ME runtime? Because if you don't have J2ME, the carriers can't sell you games, and that just won't fly.

And the cingular crap is mostly Apple's dump. They didn't want a phone that could compete with the iPod, so they crippled the iTunes phone. An iPhone? Nah. Symbian just works, and it works well.
