This is an idea I had about a year ago, basically it's like a DVD commentary track for your source code.
You record yourself talking through a section of code, walking through it's functioning and maybe some history about how you came up with it and why you did it this way versus that way. Then put the filename in your source as an extra comment like "AC 14".
From people I have talked to the major downsides to doing things this way are:
1 A standard file-naming convention needs to be described to store multiple peoples comments about a patch of code across multiple versions and different files.
One proposed format is (source filename).(version# if tracked).(Your name or initials).(comment# +letter for additional comments to the same place). (date MMDDYYYY).(mp3 or whatever)
2 It means you'd be talking a lot, and maybe disturbing co-workers.
3 Not easily accesable by deaf coders, or translated into another language.
4 Makes it less likely that you will type your comments.
I think it would be fun to sit down with some interesting or complex source code and relax as the people who know the code inside and out explain it to you.
I'm sorry, but I was there at the DARPA QID. I saw the problems they were having, and I think that next years challenge will be amazing. This field is going to advance rapidly.
I don't want to wait untill every road in the country is retrofitted with magnetic spikes to have my car drive me around. By the time that happens that tech will be obsolete anyway. Also, that kind of "smart road" is actually realy dumb... imagine the mayhem if a malicious prankster dug up the magnets and moved them.
This seems to indicate that the 6 fibers on each side would not be connecting paths, but would be illuminating a clear key with some kind of internal structure and reading intensity values to find a match.
I seem to remember reading something similar using small patches of clear plastic with tiny bubbles or fractures or something for use in credit cards. they were able to create an un-copyable identity because of the difficulty in replicating the random process that creates the internal structure.
The US economy is based on debt and the govenment is a big reason we can borrow money. as far as i can tell with, only a few exceptions, mortgage payments lead back to the federal reserve bank. Indirectly most of us (Americans) are in debt to the US government.
When i saw ads for GranTurismo 3 I thought i was seeing video footage... i had to see the ads a few times before i was able to tell that it was gameplay, and was still fooled by some of the clips.
A person is tough to get right, but those cars looked perfect to me. Reflections, shadows, realistic movement as the cars went over bumps... they even seemed a little dirty in spots. It has been a long time since i saw it, but i was fooled.
The math is wrong. In a string of 10 dna bases there are only 4^10 possible combinations, and because of the way base pairs meet each other half of these are exactly the same. (4^10)/2=524288
The article asumes that there is only one correct string of dna, and only that one correct string will work to allow life. this is false, but given their example the "magic" sequence would be one of only this small handfull.
If you have ever looked at dna you will see that it is mostly random with areas of repetition, not ordered in the way they put forth. there are huge swaths of DNA, that do nothing, in our genome.

Cells are not ordered. they are a complete mess of shit that somehow works. true there are regions within cells that do different jobs, but for the most part cells vary widely and could certainly not be considered "ordered" in the way that idea is presented.
also, the view of "information" they present is false. A string of digits in order contains 1 piece of information. a string of seemingly random numbers can mean an infinity of things depending on how you decipher it. there is a reason we call it genetic "code".
If you truly believe what that article says, read this website and kindly do not reproduce. It is as close as I have found to memetic birth control, and a weak-minded person might believe it's arguments leaving others to evolve without them.
If it's this tough for someone out of the loop to get mars rover data. I think the chances of seti discovering a usable alien signal are next to nothing.
Kind of reminds me of the Selden/Ford battle in which George Selden threatened to sue anyone owning an automobile who didn't pay a licensing fee. Ford ensured that ford owners would be protected.
I have been working for the last 6 months on something I call Choicelist that aims to be a solution for spam through any electronic communications medium. once the system is in place, it will be easy for a company to make an internet enabled caller id box that can check to see if a number is a personal number or not.
Interesting...
From skimming the newspeak site I noticed something that wasn't mentioned at all, It seems like it would be hard to ask a question in newspeak... you could bring up a topic, but it would be tough to ask an intelligent and detailed question about it.
Yes there is a way.
Even if the device is totaly passive, and weighted the same.
Aluminium is not magnetic, and I don't think Coke is either. If there is any metal at all in that can, it could be detected by placing a large magnetic field arround a stack of cans, and examining the field lines around the cans.
Testing enough cans of coke this way to give you a reasonable chance of winning would cost more than the million dollars that you would win.
As far as easily thinking about the speed of light, english units are better.... It travels almost exactly one foot per nanosecond.
This helps when imagining light streaming from a light bulb, or thinking about why ethernet can only go 300 feet.
So amaze your friends by telling them they look 4 nanoseconds younger (when 4 feet away) than they actualy are.
Last night i had a dream that i was checking my email, and my unused space on my account said 990 MB free!
Finally a dream that might come true!

OW! my eyes!
They mention a 3D light path

I'm sure i read that here maybe 6 months ago.
it adds a lot to the experience if you can see who you're playing against... especialy for strip poker.

How tough is it to get a loan in India I wonder?
When I first tried linux and the bsds it took me a while to figure out how to get arround in the terminal.
perhaps "dir" should start a linux tutorial as i'm sure i'm not the only person who's first instinct was to type "dir" when given a command prompt.

In other news: The Earth Simulator has been renamed the Go Simulator for unknown reasons...
I especially like the pictures of the assembly process.
I need to do something like that.

Sunlight can be 1000 watts per square meter
Sorry buddy, it's about 100W/square meter.
If it was 1000 watts we wouldn't be here.

Brave new world is a great book. It has a deeply conflicting theme.
Check out Metal Storm for videos of some guns and cannons that fire realy fast.
