They all go Wooooh, but it depends on what the ghost is doing. If it's just running around the place, or moving through your subfloor and into the ceiling, it will probably go Woooh. But if it's hiding in the corner and wants to scare you, it goes Booo!

... what's the main difference from a symbolic link in Windows Vista, and a normal shortcut from Windows 95/98/2k/Me/XP? With shortcuts you can link a file to another file/drive/folder from another filesystem/server. I think they are just trying to think up things to add to their already small 'feature' list.

  4. Fire on Fire Destroys Southampton Fibre-Optics Center · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's amazing how much fire can destroy and how fast. Even with advanced fire suppression systems, fire departments, etc. Without any of these, fire can be even more devastating. I was talking with a guy who said they don't have a fire department in his area, and that when there is a remote fire department responding, it's too little to late. Fires in his area take out acres and acres of land and homes. It's impossible to get insurance in the area. I joined my local volunteer fire department about a year and a half ago, and I never realized until then just how frequent fires are, and how easily they can get out of control. The biggest thing is to prepare for the worst and pray for the best.

Am I the only one blinded by that weird title bar transparency? I could see that if the window was in the background, and it was subtle, but hell. They need to think simpler. This looks like an operating system designed by leet script kiddies. I mean, the security center stuff looks horrendous too, constantly telling you about some problem or another. With no real added functionality, I think I'll stick with Win2k Pro.

  11. What are they doing with the trademark? on Gmail Becomes Google Mail in the UK · · Score: 2, Interesting

What I want to know is what the other party is doing with their trademark. If they built an email service, and had millions of people relying on it, I'd understand, but if the trademark owner isn't doing anything with the name, I'd say give it to google. I hope the court takes into consideration the confusion this will bring to all these people with email addresses, and takes a look at the few, if any people who are currently confused because of the original trademark holder.

  12. Design on Interview with Tony 'Say No to Windows' Bove · · Score: 2, Insightful

What we need in our open projects is some people who have degrees in industrial design, or have experience with commercial software design. No one cares what is under the hood, they care about stability, ease of use, and ascetics. You got to have all three to push a good product. When you open a Microsoft product out of the box, the interface is always professional, and clean cut, (mind Windows XP and it's dog). I mean, look at this. The bubbly looking icons are out of style, and why the hell do you have a smile face as the calendar button? You can say that you can change it to however you see fit, but the problem is that people don't change things, and base their opinion based on the out of the box experience. If you want to look professional, you will have icons with the same color tone that aren't so huge, and you will have icons that relate to what they do. Consistency is another must. You can't have a professional looking program without it. Sadly, I think Windows 2000 is the peak of user interface design with Microsoft, and if you want anything that looks good, and acts right, you will be going with Mac OS X.

each and every fan slot taken blowing out

That is your first problem, you need as many fans sucking in that you have blowing out. You might have three sucking in on the front of the case, and three blowing out. This will mean less load on the fans, less dirt coming in through crevasses since it needs a place to get air, and better cooling

I think someone else said filters for your fans, and that would be a viable solution as long as you changed them out ever-so-often.

  16. Simpler Design on KDE 4 Promises Large Changes · · Score: 1

They need simpler design, I look at a standard application like this, and I think, "WTF" I have one that looks just like the shutdown button in windows, a blue arrow pointing right, and a bunch of other stuff that I'd have to look at a tooltip to just try and figure out what all those things do! Everything seems bulky with big boarders too, I like Win2k where everything was thin and space efficient. The taskbar at the bottom sucks too, why do you need so many buttons there, a launcher menu and a clock will suffice, and why is it so tall with big square buttons? Why can't it have have one row of applications, and be less intrusive? I'm not trying to nag here, and I'm sure someone will say, "Get used to it", but before I move from OS X, I'm going to want a little more zen in my applications. KDE always seemed to attempt to make things easy too, but when it gives detailed instructions on how to click something, "click this for the internet!", but then asks you for parameters for your dialup account, and IRQ's, etc, it just gets frustrating. We need tighter integration between the OS and the WM. Like WIndows and MacOS X
