Never read any kernel changelogs, eh? Look at the very last line on this one. I'd say Linus is very open, especially posting his open letters to SCO awhile back.
And if Gnome doubled in speed, it'd still be slow.
Uh, slow compared to KDE? KDE is the most disgusting bloated desktop I've ever seen. Please forgive the ones of us who don't like our desktops to look like candyland.
Right on man. I have never liked CNN, and think their news is all bloated "hollywood-style." Since when does a CNN commentary deserve slashdot status? And with a story made on speculation, at that!?
Ah duh that would be a yes. You can make an AMD XP XXXX+ system for under $400 easy. Add a LCD if you wish and also DVD-R's are at $100, so you could have a kick ass computer for well under $1000, and half the price of that iMac. Sorry dude.
But for some of us a Mac just doesn't fit the needs. E.g.,:
Right on man. My girlfriend just bought a 12" iBook- it's perfect for her computer needs. But for me, I like building my own machine, messing with Linux, PC games, etc. So Mac is just not for me. Panther is quite nice, though.
I deal with marketing people a lot and they generally say that baseing a campaign on trashing your competitors products is a big no-no. It can backfire badly.
Likewise, I have found more and more KDE zealots who must advocate KDE at every corner.
AMEN!
Some of us don't like our desktops to look like Fisher-Price, and eat up all the memory doing so. I use Gnome because I like it: it's fast, clean, and simple. Nothing to do with GPL, or whatever else the KDE folks keep fussing about.
I worked with a major corporation over the summer, with probably 40 huge offices statewide. An $80 million company. The main job for the people there is to input information from customers into a database. They all use a database program written for win 95. Yes- and all the computers use windows 95. Pentium 175(?)s I think, with 64 mb of ram. There is absolutely no need for this company to even think about upgrading, since they just do data entry.
(Or perhaps switching to a linux distro would be quite nice! It's companies like this where I think Suse or others could win over big with linux in the corporate world.)
macs are gone for the most part in public schools.
I thought schools are the only people who buy macs- with some big educational discounts. Lots of computer labs in schools I've been in have been mac only. And also all the teachers get a mac for their room, etc. Schools are flooded with macs. That's how it is in NC.
I recently bought a new Gateway laptop and use it on a daily basis- perhaps 50+ hours a week. It's rock solid, and have had no problems with it. The price for it was a couple hundred lower than the big bulky Dell comparative laptop with same specs, and it shipped pretty much instantly on order. It's too bad the laptops aren't catching on more to help this company out of $$$ problems.

(Btw- the Mandrake 9.2 install on this Gateway model 400vtx went just fine. Only problem was getting the video to 1024x768- it's that intel cheap "Extreme" graphics thing.)
Heck yeah. I like Gnome because it is clean, and no candy. KDE looks like I'm using a fisher-price version of a desktop to me. And all the anamation things are annoying (yes, I know I can turn those off). So for me Gnome is great. No crap.
Ah! My bad, I'm a little slow.

*Ahem* Cue the Soviet Russia jokes.....
Beethoven is easy to conduct. Let's see the little guy do Rite of Spring!

He left out a BIG feature to compare: blocking attachments. I'm a Thunderbird user, and this is one thing that T'bird lacks unfortunately.

Audacity is a fantasic wave editor, but it is neither a sampler (like the s900) nor a multitracker
Uh, yes it is indeed a multitracker.
Scott in NC
Audacity is a multitrack editor- something that most of the $50-$70 similar software titles cannot do!

What about a live CD that will work with laptops, including the power management/wi-fi features?

Not to mention [Mozilla is] not as mature as IE6.
Man, you've got a lot of guts posting something like that on Slashdot.
Next time don't forget to add the (/sarcasm) to the end of your post.

Where can I download the patch for IE5?
The Patch.

(Come on, you knew this answer was coming!)
What does this mean for Openoffice.org?
Scott
(An ignorant clueless person when it comes to what the heck XML is.)
I ran the installer and boom: have my extensions from Firebird 0.7, and all of my bookmarks are there. Worked fine for me!

And people say Macs are expensive?

[if] I could play retail video games with no hassel
Get a Playstation 2 dude!

They left out one BIG fact. They use Linux.
Here is a link from Netcraft.

Just like presidential candidates, funny enough.

Nice try but that won't work.
It works. Worked fine for me. Just changed the email address and clicked "finished" or "done" or whatever at the bottom, and now it's all set.
