Sorry I wasn't entirely clear. I mean, if you take, say the Mahler 2 San Fran/MTT CD and encode it with lame as a mp3 or encode as an ogg (to the highest levels), it comes out sounding like ass unfortunately. Lots of airy distortion, and noise. And if you have a choir in there, you can really hear the noise even worse. Lame is good for pop songs, etc. but it just doesn't work as well as the Franhaufer (sp?) encoder with classical music unfortunately.
Not to mention the mp3 encoder in iTunes is excellent. That's one thing Linux lacks. (Disclaimer: Please don't say ogg or lame, b/c they don't do classical music at all, unfortunately.)
This usb midi device to connect your midi keyboard works excellent in Linux. The module is snd-usb-audio. I've done all the midi-type applications (rosegarden, NoteEdit, etc) and this midi/usb works great. Plugged it in and it works.
Just wanted to make a post in case others might be interested.
WTF I hate the stupid Washington Post. Could they perhaps actually talk to a computer user or techie about their story before they just post this crap for the world to see?
SP2 sounds like a good thing for Linux. With Linux I don't have to worry about spyware, or crap. Ahh....:) Linux is catching on big time with the college crowd and SP2 might give it a big boost.
For those who did not bother reading the study, the author himself is painfully aware of the shortcoming of only studing pitches. He finishes with "It would be interesting to consider alternative extensions, at the level of melodic phrases, harmonic sequences, or rhythmic patterns, and thus explore the concept of musical context at different scales."
Heck yeah. For anyone who knows music of the last 100 years, it's not just about pitch and "key areas." The author of this study didn't know this apparently. Leave the musical analysis conclusions to musicians.
I had this same problem with Mandrake 10 on my dual boot. Couldn't boot into XP after installing Mandrake. I was thinking that lilo corrupted something in the boot sector, but perhaps not. Must be the 2.6.x kernel in Mandrake 10. (?)
I mean that the statistic is from looking at sales dollars, NOT NUMBER OF COMPUTERS SOLD. That's why in the original posters remark the stat doesn't apply in his case. I'm not FREAKING SAYING THAT "RAW SALES DOLLARS ARE WORTHLESS."
Clearly laptops are going to be 50%+ of sales dollars of items in the category of "computer" because they are twice the price of desktops. Search for the old/. article, this was discussed at length awhile back. Anyways,...
I hate stupid fucking trolls. Quit complaining and actually try to make whatever you think sucks to work better. I'm sure any of the open source projects would gladly accept your donations to help.
Right on, man. Looking at their "proof" or whatever version for Linux, it's quite a bit lacking of what OpenOffice.org has to offer right now, and for free.
It's because to get the claim, you must have your windows 95 or 98 sales receipt, and cd key. It doesn't apply to windows XP. Who in the heck still has a sales receipt for windows 95?

What about gtkpod?
I think Linux users want the "essentials" file on there. Sorry it's been a bit since I set these up.
Quicktime and wma codecs for mplayer here.
What the heck would they have on 5 cds? Lol.
So I guess this proves the mission wasn't a planned fake filmed in Area 54? (okay okay not funny....)
Ha! Oh my that's crazy!
And with that above post, I hereby say: let the KDE vs. Gnome flame wars begin!!!!!
Anyone else having problems with the doom site in Linux? Using Firefox with flash installed as usual, the popup flash site doesn't open fully. :/

Please, keep these garage basement posts out of the news... we already have enough trolls. Thanks.
I'm still waiting for Yahoo to accept that Mozilla and Firefox are acceptable secure browsers.

Suse 9.0 is the only distro that worked out of the box with the noisy ACPI fan on my Cel 1.8 Gateway laptop.
Looking forward to 9.1!

Remember, laptops are now over 50% of all PC sales.
That statistic was from looking at raw sales dollars $$$$. Since laptops are twice the price as desktops, that stat is n/a; worthless.
