Why only linux ?
All three run on variety of Unix like OSes which are, if not any better than linux, atleast equally suitable ( or unsuitable as the case may be) for desktop use.
Ooo even runs on windows, infact its ability to be cross-platform complient, will deter companies/consumers to move from their existing Windows installations. I mean many companies who already have a large scale existing Windows deployment, would save lots of money just by switching to Ooo from MS Office. Yes they can save more from switching to linux, but that would be a much slow gradual change.
Give mea break, Its hardly a 300 words article and what is so interesting about it ?
I couldn't get anything from the article, the real interesting part is the routing and not mapping. But the only information I found about routing was....
Moss opens up a "Shmem," or shared memory file, and puts in all the new info. When she gets back to the office, the heavy lifting starts.
"Usually it takes about twice the time to code it as it does to drive," Moss says. "There's so much information to put in."
Oh so they use Shmem , wow that's sooooo interesting.
For me, Firebird behave's differently on 3 different OSes.
At work, I use solaris, and have downloaded a build from the contrib area, It is not quite fast, but rock solid stable, sometimes I can go for months without restarting it. At home I have Firebird Windows build for Athlon and it is quite fast but not as fast as IE at times. Also on my linux partition I compile firebird from CVS and is extremely fast, but not very stable, it doesn't crash but hangs often, but its a CVS build so I am not complaining.
What still keeps me away from other browsers though is the enormous extensions available for firebird, some of them are really really helpful and if IE or Opera has no easy way to support those functionality then I am not even trying them.
But most of the software's that install over internet only download the installer over the internet.
After that the installer run's locally, i.e. the installer executable is running on the consumer's PC not on the webserver.
So unless the patent cover's downloading over internet, which in turn would mean patenting the HTTP or FTP or any kind of File transfering protocol, I don't see how can they apply this patent.
May be not wrong from any practical purpose but definitely wrong from various ethical reasons
First of all, being tracked all the time gives a person a feeling of insecurity. These are kids, not some master mind criminals. The worst they can do is miss a class, pull a prank , bulley someone , (please don't give columbine referances).
Continous tracking gives a sense of dis-trust and that is totally worng psychologically, A kid needs to feel secure and trusted in a learning environment.
It gives unnecessary surveillance power to the authorities. This raises the question "who's watching the wathers ?". What if the person monitoring the kids routine is a child molestor, he could have unprecedented access to damaging information.
If children are tought to live under all day surveillance under the pretext of their safety, they will grow up to be paranoid freaks, who will have no idea what terms like privacy, liberty mean
The logic of limiting technology and thereby curbing copyright infringment reminds me of...
And what else floats on water ?
A Duck..."A DUCK!"
"Exactly! Soooo . . . "
" . . . If she weighs . . . as much as . . . a duck . . . "
"Yes?"
"Then she's made out of wood . . . "
"And therefore . . . ?"
" . . . . A WITCH!"
"A WITCH!"
"BURN THE WITCH!"
"BURN HER!"
"To the scales!"
The scalability and maintainability of a project ove r a period of time most importantly depends on the quality of code and documentation within code (Comments).
I have seen so much java code, so badly written that the developer who wrote it 6 months ago, was also hesitant to touch it.
While on the other hand, I have seen hugh shell scripts being maintained over a period of 10 years.
If the code to be maintained is poorly written and ill documented , then no matter wheather you use strict type checking or not, it will be a nightmare to maintain.
Just tow days ago , I got a call on my cell.
The caller-ID was shown as Private Number, and when I answered, It was a pre-recorded message which went something like this.....
Hi this call will not cost you anything and is brought to you by XYZ the makers of ABCD. If you would like to proceed, press 1 on your dial pad
At which point I hung up. If this starts happening frequently then will be very annoying.
But for machines that need to be up all the time 24x7 for years, this is very critical.
I have worked with Tandem Mainframes, In the entire 2-3 years I was working with them, NOT once were they rebooted, and I remember atleast 2-3 CPU hot swaps.
Adding hot swapping capabilitites to linux kernel is a big step towards taking linux to the really big enterprise tasks.
It was not bittorrent or filesharing that caused the code to be stolen.
Filesharing or no filesharing, hackers will always try these kind of things regardless. It is upto the concerning business to have a proper security mechanism in place.
How foolish can you be when your code worth potentially millions of $s is kept on a machine accessible from public internet.
Ever heard of things like Firewalls, intrusion detection, etc ?
how many Laptop Harddisks have been damaged due this very specific problem of the head not being parked(?).during a deacceleration.
Does it add any mechanical stability to the harddisk ? What if the hard disk breaks in two pieces ?
Ah the classic eddie izzard sketch, but i am dead sure its influenced by one of monty python sketches from "And now for something completely different".
I can't quite remember which one, but its the one, where the enemy is defeted by a joke.

GIMP also runs on windows, albeit horribly.

Although I could not have installed my first ever linux , in 1996 without these great sets of documents, Let face it , they are very very outdated.
Lot of the mini -HOWTOs are totally useless now.
Now only if you were using VIM...
Just another editor for me to waste time pressing the ^[:wq!

You mean to say keanu reeves was not a robot and was actually a human ? I'll be damned.

When he said OFFLINE, he obviously ment make the machine or the internal network inaccessible to the public internet.
