I have to diagree with almost all comments that tell you , you learn more about the system if it doesn't hold your hand.
Thats a bunch of crap. Whether you learn the system depends on whether you want to learn the system or not.
My first experience with Unix was a normal User a/c on a sun sparc box. I had no root access, no X, no vim (plain ol' vi), no bash. but by the time I installed RH 5.x somewhere in 98, It took me just a couple of weeks to figure out stuff.
Talking about a *nix system, whether you learn or not very much depends on whether you are GUI or CLI inclined. If you are CLI inclined then no matter what the distro is , it will take you hardly any time to figure which configuration goes in to which files. Remember the Unix configurations are stored in TEXT files rather than a binary registry.
So no matter what distro you use, The ability to learn how a system works, how to best configure and customise your system, lies in your apptitude to learn and master the CLI.

Well "free speech"/"no censorship" may be a US law but certainly not a international law. And internet is a global thing which can not be governed by either a US law or an international law.
In fact each country's local law will determine the fate of each packet that passes over h/w equipments stationed in that country. If that is unacceptable to some, tough luck, find another country to host the equipment
Each country has its laws which may appear as censorships to others, this doesn't give the other countries the right to interfere with the country's law.
One man's law is other man's censorship.
and One man's freedom is other man's barbarism.

    now for the questions
Apart from the free (speech/beer whatever) source/ closed source propoganda what has linux to offer a average customer (read non-geek) that windows doesn't ?
If its all about choice, then what will prevent customers from choosing windows in future, even if hypothetically speaking the customer is able to buy a no pre-installed OS pc.?
Even though MS license's are costly for enterprise level purchase, the argument doesn't hold true for single PC purchases. 99$ for WindowsXP upgrades v/s 40-150 $ for any leading linux distro. I know that linux distros include much more than a bare bone OS, but do the customers really care ?
One of THE MOST important things for linux to succeed in desktop is to get the OEM manifactures out from the microsoft's clutches. Right now MS has gat them by their nuts. Unless OEM manifactures natively support linux, we will have to depend on reverse-engg. hacks for our h/w to work under linux. Just how does the linux community proposeto bring about this change ?

You can't expect the current administration or house to insist upon a tariff on imported services, can you?
Sure you can, but remember that the american companies like coke, pepsi, McDonalds, KFC, PnG, Nike , etc etc have huge markets outside US, especially in far east populous countries like india, china, japan, korea
Now if govt. of these countries were to impose the same tariff that you speak of on imported american goods, .... Well you get the picture.
face it, the world is shrinking day by day, and if affects everybody's life in some way or another
America is a super-power in the world not because of its military , rather because of its economic dominance. But that economy can not be self contained, To be a world leader you have to play the same game on equal fields
To stay competetive in world markets the american companies need to reduce costs at all options, and labor cost is a very convenient option.

The real question is which can be marketed better ?
Afterall the company with a better marketing dept. is going to do well than one with a poor one, albeit having a better product
And TCO is only one of the several factors that go into marketing a product. Some companies do infact like polished products even at a higher cost

And say all what you may, the Windows products look much more polished than any others. Please don't start with OSX, and KDE and gnome,
Because what looks cool and polished to geeks like us, may not look so to the IT managers.

So TCO alone won't help linux/unix topple M$, its got to be more marketable than windows.
