    I hate this anxiety , how i upgrade my RH 8.0 to KDE3.1 ,GNOME 2.2. I am really loosing it now. I can't take this anymore, time to switch ....

    Unless Linux comes pre-installed on systems, the most average users still will have to learn a few basics. He will atleast defrag the HD using Windows.

    the installations may auto resize the HardDisks but the Windows won't break only if its defragged.No matter what people say, installing and using linux requires some basic understanding of PCs.

    I alwasy compare windows to a midicore audio system with pre-set equilizer settings, bass, treble, FM tuner, CD and cassette holder. While Linux on the other hand is a kick-ass Audio system with 6+1 surround sound , a 10 band equalizer, AMP, well you get the picture.Can your mom use that ?

    At this point it hardly matters if my mom can use it, as long as i know that my son can use it :-)

    I think they are thinking about starting to show advertisements on DVDs preety soon. And if you can filter out selectivecontents , you will be able to filter out ADs too..

    And that would be stealing content.Now we don't want to steal content and deny the HW of its millions (or should i say billions) do we .... ?

    2-3 years ago ... I know its good, but does it do windows ? or how can i install it on windows (actually this can be done :-) )?

    NOW :- We want to use linux, to reduce our IT budget cost . Also we are fed up with the security issues with M$ products and the licnesing costs are killing us. Plus we have heard that linux is an excellent replacement for legacy *inxs.

    Although IBM may not have contributed directly to kernel code, they are doing a lot to improve LINUX's image in the mindset of MANAGERS of IT Project,

    As they say, Win the MANAGER and the staff will follow.

    This means that you can do PC-PC as in GnomeMeeting-GnomeMeeting,GnomeMeeting-NetMeeting, GnomeMeeting-AnyH.323CompliantSoftware. In theory at least..

    Well you said it perfectly , right now its working only in theory. Infact this incompatibility with Netmeeting is the only thing i am using dual boot. I can't use GnomeMeeting to even video conf which my friend sitting next door , even if we are on the same ISP with no NATTing and firewall.

    The instrument costs 150$, now thats a lot of money for my poor pocket.

    Well we did all that.

    There wasn't one single v$ view that we left uninspected. We uesd lots of query analysis tools,the queries were highly optimized, so was the DB schema. The tablespaces, the rollback segments etc were configured optimally

    But you have to realise the fact that, with a Data mining DB the no. of rows just pile up over the years and its not even allowed to delete the data.

    I belive no matter what optimization you use, maintaining high volume data is a whole different ball game.

    I had the misfortune of dealing with oracle tech support team once and I can say I am not surprised the ".org" domain has shifted to PG.

    The DB was locking up when trying to retrieve data from a large table (>10 M rows) using a very complex query.The oracle guys kept suggesting that reduce the size of the table.

    Now seriously is that a valid option ? Hey man , I have a million bucks in my acct. and i can't withdraw from the ATM ??
    Just delete some of it and then try again ?
    Or the most common answer from Oracle tech team is "we know its a problem but we will not fix it in this release. Just buy the next version if you want it fixed ?

    YAWN....Java on client is Long Long Long Dead.
    First it takes lots and lots of time for the applet to load.

    I am not talking about a small applet,
    but if you want to develop a serious web application using Java Applets, the Applet jar would be hugh.

    Remember on a dial-up even a 100 KB file is Pain in the A$$ to download.

    Besides the Sun's implementation of JRE plugin sucks. It locks up all the time be it windows or linux.

    besides MS is riddled with enough security vulnarabilities of their own to be bothered to deal with sec. problems of the JRE.

    Also how is M$ supposed to keep trak of future Java versions. ?

    I code in Java for a living and have been doing it for more than 4 years. but not once have i been asked to code an applet.

    should GM be forced to include Kenwood stero systems in their CARS ?

    I will have to side with Visa on this one.

    Firstly Visa is a financial institute with daily transactions worth billions of $$s. So say what you want but thats a big responsibility.

    If for some reason some one goes to evisa.com and enters his Credit Card details thinking that its a VISA affiliated site then VISA's is in big trouble.

    The e prefix is very confusing. We already have efiling, egovernment, ebusiness so Naturally its understandable that Users may confuse evisa as electronic-visa

    Now having said that, I belive that since VISA is such a big business, they should have reserved such obvious variations of their URL long time ago

    I don't think even the world population is remotely near that number.
    And out of these about 30-40 % literate and say about 1 % computer savvy. And aount 0.0001 % linux users.
    Still 0.0001 % of 1 B. is a substansial number.
    But knowing the indian politicians at first hand, I would suspect this is just a trick to get some Dollars from bill G.
